Turning in my go fast badge aka parting out race car

Fellas, Im getting out of the game so to speak.

Ive decided to sell off everything on my turbocharged camaro including the car itself. Most of it has to do with the fact that I still live at home and would like to get out and I have a couple of larger long term debts that I would like to get rid of.

That coupled with the fact that I just have not had much fun with my car over the past year now. Im ready to move on. Perhaps sometime down the road I will move on.

This has been building for quite some time now and I would jsut rather do the responsible thing for me right now and get out while I can so I can get out of my parents place. LOL Im 25 and need to do it.

I still have a 2000 Trans Am that I can play with although it admitedly wont be near as bad as my turbocharged IROC. LOL

Ill still stick around and moderate but I thought I would chime in and let people know that Im getting out of it.

Most of that stuff is sold. A friend is buying the shortblock, headers, turbo, wastegate, Speed Pro, injectors, etc.

Is the fuel injection sold? I see you liste Speed-Pro, but I thought(from previous posts) you had said that you owned a FAST unit? What about the intercooler and accessories? If I'm not mistaken it is an air to water unit correct? What size are the cores? What do you have that foers along with the IC?

Hey Curt, sorry to hear it but I have to tell you I had laugh at myself when I read your post. I've been burned out for a while. I just don't have the time. I don't think you can imagine how many times I've said those same things to myself the last couple of years. I've even went so far as to itemize everything on a spreadsheet to figure out what I might be able to recoup. It's tempting. A couple of months ago I walked away and really haven't though much about it. We'll see.

BTW, 25 and at home isn't too bad. Just look at Tom(ZBass) and Russ(PureEvil). What are they, like 40 now? Okay, maybe not that bad but they are well into their 30's.

I miss my 13 second bolt-on car.

You know, I took the Trans Am to the track last night and only ran a 13.41 @ 109mph but damn was it fun to drive to the track, slide on the helmet after paying $15 and get in line. LOL

Im sick of living at home and not having money. I remember a time when I used to actually HAVE money and I miss that. I can get out of this thing and be inthe plus pretty well. Enough to get myself a good down payment and some stuff inside of wherever I move. LOL

Sad isnt it??

I itemized my car a while back and it itemized out around $40k. LOL

Hey guido we've never directly addressed each other but your project has been well known to me and I've watched its progress for a long time now. Its an extremely impressive build and has always been interesting to 'tune in' to the latest. Sorry to see you getting out but keep your foot into that 2000, 13s~ are still fun

Peace

I was at $40K 2 years ago...and I've changed ALOT since then.

When it's time, and If you are interested of course, my wife is a real estate broker and her company is connected to a national(not a chain) service that will sort through the riff-raff agents/agencies for you. It's at no cost to you what-so-ever and if I remember correctly, you can pick and choose from their selections. FWIW, She handles all the corporate relocations for my new employer this way.

Curt,

You are looking at it all wrong. You need to adopt the RMK way of life-that way you can still keep the car! The way I see it, it should only be a few more years before my parents move out.

1. I am born.
2. Parents buy big family house.
3. Parents spend lots of money on said house.
4. Parents move out and get a place of their own.

It really is that simple.

Good luck with it all.

If I ever get bored with my project I am going to find a place to park it, cover it up and leave it for however long it takes for me to get interested again. Its one of those things where you just know deep down that you will regret the decision down the road, but if you need the money I guess go for it...

I just wanted to thank you for all the help with all my questions I have asked you, your car really inspired me to go turbo!
It sucks to see you get out of it, but I believe that there is more to life than horsepower, and you definately gotta do what ya gotta do!

How much of the $40K do you think you will recoup from the parting out?

Best of luck with things, and may your next project car be even more impressive than the outgoing one!

Guido, I'm sad to see the project disappear, I've folled it for a while and always check in to see your progress. I've got a similar project in the works and can understand the getting burnt out thing... its been months since I last touched it. I figure its a hobby and if its not fun anymore why work on it? I end up working on the car in spurts, a couple weekends here, getting frustrated and taking a few months off, etc. But I have to say what unknown_host said hits home for me... I'd never dream of selling it because I always start getting interested again.

If I had scads of money, this wouldnt be such an issue. Id cover it up and let it sit a while. But the way it is, I have some debts I want to get out of and I can do it with the money from selling this car. Someday I will have another project.Im not burnt out on cars.

If anyone wants a turbo setup on their car, Id be happy to fabricate one for said person. I LOVE doing that ****. Im hankering to do something on someone's car.

A friend of mine is getting ready to drop an LS1/T56 into a newer S10 extreme and I keep on trying to talk them into leting me build a set of headers for it and put a turbocharger on. haha

Im just another gearhead in need of some cash guys. The car hasnt been fun for over a year now and it can make me some money so Im selling it.

I imagine I can make back $15k+. We will see. Maybe more than that even

You always lose your butt on a project. You'll never get back what you put into it, and you will always lose money.

I regretted selling my 83Z, so the bike has to go before the car.

You will start another project soon.

Why don't you make up some pre-fabbed turbo kits and sell them for some cash? I'd buy one if I had the cash.

My car is so far from stock, I wouldnt be able to mock up a set of headers for anyone using stock airbox, and stuff like that. I have my old daily driver that I might be able to do something on. Id have to see if someone was interested in it though.

Sad to hear you're out of it Guido, but you gotta do what you gotta do. BTW, I'll probably be living at home at 25 unless I get an awesome job, otherwise I couldn't afford my own place3 and work on my car, and I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have a car to drop insane amounts of money into.

Curt,

There is a time and place for everything. You and only you will know when the time is right to do what you must.

This is a very expensive hobby (some will call it an obscession). It is extremely difficult to follow your dreams when you're young and don't have the income to support your hobby. Having been where you are today, I can say that you ARE doing the right thing. Get your life in order first (priority #1). Then with what's left, pursue your dreams. Do this knowing that one day, money will not be an issue, as long as you pursue priority #1. I cannot overstate this. For me, I gave up this hobby when I was in my mid-20's, but the fire in me still burned. Today, my priority #1 is set and I'm back into my hobby where money is not an issue. If the fire still burns in you in the future, you'll most likely be where I am today. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

Dude you have the skills... you have the desire... Make header kist for thirdgens - you know that there is a market for it and you can always start small get the order then fab the kit. Hell If I can afford it I would buy one from you. And if you really need stock 3rd gens to play with I am not too far fromm you and Have a carbd car and a TBI car you can use for mock ups and such.

I would atleast consider making some assembled and unassebled prototypes for jigging and getting someone to make them for us all.

Sorry to hear you are out, I loved following your project(very impressed) . I too am in mid 20's and seriously into cars. I'm a boost addict also. Eventually, ya, I had the same problem.... more money than I was making went into the cars and projects. All three toys I own now are boosted. 49 ford, 88 TA and 92 civ. I couldn't let go of the addiction. Now I've let accumilated knowledge work for me. I started my own garage with a bud and everything gets paid for. Why not get a garage??? Put your skills to work (you've obvioulsy got em). I'm making turbo headers all the time for guys and fabbing all sorts of stuff. I love it and get enough. Life is short, do something you enjoy.

Best to you , what ever you do.... I'm sure something will pop up.

Dont call it "Turning in my go fast badge", call it "passing the torch". All the work you have done has either inspired or directly helped others. The parts you sell will help other's cars go faster. The parts you will build in the future will to. Keep the badge, just going from soldier to general.

Guido,
I'm sure once you find your own place and get settled in, the garage will be empty, waiting for another project. I haven't touched the Z28tt all that much recently, and there's only about 40 hours of work left to get it running, but if it's not fun anymore, what's the point? We do this because we love it, so a break can be a good thing, especially when you get back into it down the road. Whatever you do - don't ever sell any of your tools. That's one of the things that you'll always need down the road. Heh - I'll probably be that old geezer talking to my grandkids about when I was young, I bought this ratchet with my allowance $... Anyways, good luck finding a garage to live in, with a bed & a broadband connection in the corner!

LOL Im not selling any of the tools. I still have my prized possession! 220V miller TIG! I love that thing.

TPI383, if you are serious, bring the car over and leave it and I will build a set of turbo headers for you. You have the turbo. That is half of the big cost.

The other half is intercooler and exhaust.

If you are serious, shoot me an email @ z28seabass@hotmail.com and we can talk more off list about it. I remember when you asked me about it.

is the turbo kit for sure sold?

How about the car? How much and what kinda price? What comes with it? I am very interested in You build a turbo kit for my 85 Iroc. Let me know kinda prices and do you think mild steel would hold up or go ahead and use stainless. I saw Pro turbo use somemild steel and coat them on there kits. I have GM 18* Heads(so you know what flanges). I also saw Proturbo makes flanges for my heads to.

Please email me with some info when you get it. I have a K-member(PARacing),coil over, tubular a-arms already installed.

Thanks
