vortec heads
Well I thought U couldn't put 350 heads on a 305 because the 350 heads cause a lower compression ratio.

you can put them on but it will lower compression a little bit... your better off going with 58cc combustion chamber for a 305 instead of 64cc... this will maintain the comp ratio

Excuse my ignorance but what is the chamber on your 350 heads. I guess I should ask what did you do to them to get them to work on your 305? Thanks for all the info you've given.

Sorry Wayne don't mean to hijack Ur post
To 90FormulaWs6: how do you change the 64cc combustion chamber to 58cc on these heads & estimated cost of having it done?
To billyhoss: how & cost of milling heads to .020.
Thanks all for helping this poor ol' shadetree

you cant change the combustion chamber from 64 to 58... if you want vortec heads you have to buy the ones with 58cc combustion chambers
#20
you can too change the combustion chamber by getting them milled
it costed me about 80 bucks canadain to get them done here, you can get them milled .045 but then u have to get the intake side milled also to match the intake again, but this way u can use a regular .039 mil gakset instead of the thin .015, but i have had no problems at all with the .015 gasket, just make sure to tourqe everything to specs and u will be fine, he would not want the 305 tbi vortecs, they are not the same chambers at all, stick with the 350 heads but rememeber u would need a new intake also since they have the 8 bolt intake and not the 12

edit do whatever you think is the best route for you to go... personally i would tell you go buy the 58cc's b/c from what ive read you want something that requires little to no work and is cheap

that would be the best to get the right size chanbers but the 305 vortecs are not the same as the 350 ones, so imho the 80 canadain to get them milled is well worth it, gm would have made it easier on all of us if them made them both the same with the heart shaped chambers , now if he really wanted something cheap he should be looking else where to begin with cause he woudl still have to buy the intake to match them also so in the long run if he wanted cheap he could/should look for a set of cheap 305 roller tpi heads and get them worked on, that way he can keep his stock intake if he wanted unless he was upgrading it anyways then the extra cost to get them milled is well worth it imho, but thats just me, just do a qiuck search and u will see that the 305 and 350 vortecs are not the same chamber design at all, 350`s are the heart shaped ones

355... ~9.7:1 compression, i was gonna rebuild them and fully port and polish them... what year is the cam? Id be interested in it also

i think u would be better off going with the zz4 if u can support that lift, the lt1 cam i got kicking here is about the size of the 92 350 tpi so depending what u want in the end i guess

vortec heads
Firstly thankyou all for the wealth of info.
Wayne: I'll try 2 get a quote on having heads milled here locally & if price is not too prohibitive (& U haven't already sold) I may purchase Ur s.
To: billyhoss & formula90 : I was planning to get that new TPI vortec friendly intake manifold that I read about in superchevy mag. about 2 years ago (ok well I guess that's not exactly new)-can't recall who made it (Edlebrock I think) but U guys mentioned adding a LT1 cam & I actually want to keep the displacement @ 305 (I was told putting a 350 cam in a 305 makes into a 327 or thereabouts). a nutshell I currently have a replacement 305 TBI in my camaro that came from an 89 ex-state trooper caprice but hope to in a few years rebuild the original 305 block to make @ least 300 hp (stock it rated at a dismal 170hp) & install it back in it's proper home as I'm sure my 88 vert will someday be a collectors item (I will save all the TBI parts to after tpi upgrade in case that increases it's value down the line). Thanks again guys.

Whoever said that putting a 350 cam in a 305 makes it a 327 is wrong.
Putting a 350 cam in a 305 doesn't make it larger in displacement, it might give it a couple extra horsepower, but it will stay 305 cubic inches.
The size of the engine pertains to the stroke, and cylinder bore size.

slow is right, changing the cam does not change displacement, only how long the valves are open for and how far they open, it would be 22 usd for me to ship that cam to u 90FormulaWS6.
88drop i have a 305 tpi with the vortec 350 heads milled down .020 and using the fpp .015 shim gasket and the vortec tpi intake with an lt1 cam and it really woke up that tpi
