So, did Bush "snub" Canda or were we purposely not mentioned?
As many Canadians know (now), in Bush's address he mention MANY countries, including El Salvador and Iran, for their support. But NOT ONE WORD about Canada.
Some are calling it an oversight and others are calling it a "snub". My wife says, "when you are close neighbours like Canada and the US, their is no need to mention it". So I said, "Does that mean at Christmas when I thank EVERYONE for their gift, except you, that you won't be offended"?
Personally, I think it was a snub, and due to our "wonderful" Prime Minister's decision to attend a Liberal Fund Raiser (his politiacl party for our American friends), rather than attend Ground Zero. And while the Minister for Foreign Affairs is saying "Canada will whatever the US wants" in this forthcoming war, our Prime Minister is "backpeddling" on what Canada's involvement will be.
Where's Lee Harvey when you need him.

Ahh, you know. Jean just has his head stuck a bit too far up his anus to pay attention to what he really should be doing.
Liberal fund raiser
Cretien needs to "backpedal" his head out of his ****!
For cry'in out loud, the U.S. is our closest neighbor, and is supposed to be our closest friend!
In one respect, as a Canadian, it kinda hurts to not hear President Bush speak of our country when he speaks of so many others. In another respect, I can totally see why he did not.
I tell ya, as democratic as Canada is, it sure is a stinkin shame we don't get to choose the leader of our own government, not directly anyway. If we did, there is no way in H E L L that Cretien would be P.M. I mean, really, who wants a man who speaks out of only one side of his mouth speahing for his/her country?????
O.K. Enough politics already.
And since I have not yet posted on the WTC issue, I will take this opportunity to extend all my deepest condolances to anyone, anywhere, who has been affected, directly or indirectly, by this horrible act. As fellow citizens of the free world we all share in the horror of the murderous attacks on our friends in America. I am confident that all those responsible have a special "extra hot" burner waiting for them in H E L L if they have not already arrived.

I missed the speech, but I think it is pretty crappy he didn't mention Canada! I think you are right about the idea that its one of those closest neighbors so you kinda take it for granted thing.... which isn't right but we all know it can happen....

My guess is it's an oversight and he didn't mention it because he's mentioned it before so he didn't think he needed to.

Probably an oversight. I wouldn't read too much into it.

I too think it is pretty crappy that Bush did not mention our Candan Bro's However, from his speach, I think he was trying to emphasis his support on the Arabic countries and people for thier support since they are crutial because this war is near their homes and is of thier people and religion....I don't think Bush intentionally snubbed CANADA. Just think he was paying particular attention to that corner of the world....for obvious reasons.

I agree with your wife, Glenn. It is a given that Canada and America are on the same page. We are very much two countries in unity. Continually supporting one another.
It did, however, bother me that G Dub said that the U.K. was America's "greatest friend" when I believe he should have said that about Canada. Now, maybe he said that because Tony Blair was in attendance of the statement, which still does not justify the comment. But, maybe he also meant it in a more "war-like taking action kind of way". Of which, I can understand.
Canada is, and always be our sibling nation. Many US functions I have attended also included many Canadians. The Canadian Anthem was always sung prior to "*** Bless America". And it has been sung with much feeling and belief in the fact that we are, in essence united as one.
Canada is a great country. It has managed to remain a comrade of the US, despite the chances it takes in doing so, and for that, I, for one, am very grateful.
We stand on guard for thee.

The feeling by most of the people I have spoken to in Canada on the subject is they feel it was a "snub". But their anger is not towards Bush, but our Prime Minister. Up here, we feel that Cretian SHOULD have gone to the US to pay his respects and attended like Blair and the other world leaders did.
But, Cretian had a fund raiser to attend, so he "snubbed" Bush's gathering. I am entirely certain that if Cretian had attended Bush's speach, LIKE HE SHOULD HAVE, that Canada would have been mentioned like all the other countries.
What bothers me more is the "backpeddling" he has done on the issue of military support. Initially, the Minister of Foreign Affairs said Canada was going to offer whatever support the US needed, including military. Later, Cretian starts to backpeddle and begins to act "wishwashy" on the issue of military support and says "we will have to see".
Frankly, most Canadians on the western side of the country are tired of politcians that only represent the Eastern half of our country. The support for Cretian and his Liberal Government stops as soon as you get west of Ontario. Hardly a Liberal was elected west of Ontario in the last election last year.
Sometimes, I wish they would have a referendum on whether the western part of Canada should remain in Canada or separate (and most likely join the US). The more I speak to people around where I live, they feel that the west gets very little from being in Canada and we would probably be better off if we were a part of the US.
At least we would get car parts cheaper and play with guns again.

Forgive my ignorance in Canadian history, but do you think things in Canada would be different politically and militarily right now if Quebec would have broken off when it originally wanted to?
Glenn mentioned the differences in the East and West and I wondered if Quebec separating from Canada might have changed that politically.

Many feel Quebec's desire to separate is more of a threat than an actual wish. If Quebec were to separate, you'd find Canada split into a Northern Region (Yukon & NWT), Western (BC, Alberta, Sask & Manitoba), Ontario, Quebec, and Maritime (NB, NS, PEI and NFLD).
The Western, Northern and Maritime would all probably approach entry into the US and you'd end up with Ontario and Quebec as the remimants of Canada. Overtime, I suspect even Ontario and, lastly, Quebec would eventually join the US, leaving Canada as just a memory.
Then I look forward to the time when the State of Quebec goes up to the US Government and demand that everything must have English and French on it, including your money. George W Bush: "They want what??? You tell them fuque toi and eat some cake!!!"

Oh man, would we ever be better off separating from the East! We are just economic and political colonies of Ontario and Quebec. They don't ever want us to have the same political clout they do. They are just a bunch of blood-suckers. Quebec only howls about separating in order to extort more money from Ottawa, who in turn pump the West for ever increasing "tranfer payments" just so they can keep buying Quebec's and the Maritimes' votes.
Does that make even the remotest sense to you guys? I didn't think so!
The West Wants Out!!!! Yeah baby!!!

I heard that Bill Clinton was really angry when he met Cretian (our PM) for the first time. Clinton had arranged for a private meeting over a late dinner to discuss ways to improve relations. But his aides forgot to tell him that Jean was a guy.

'Mange le merde'
Heheh.
And if we joined the States, we wouldn't have a 19% duty on our softwood going there anymore. All the unemployed mill workers in BC might get their jobs back. Hooray.
If you want a crash course in the Canada situation, listen to 'The Toronto Song' by the Arrogant Worms. Very funny stuff. (But don't listen to 'The War Of 1812' You might be offended)

However it's spelled, I thought it meant "How are you?" for the first two years my wife and I were together. I'd say hello to my mother-in-law and that's what she'd reply. Imagine my suprise when my wife told me what she was saying....
