Good shops to do head work

Does anyone know where I can go to get cylinder head and block work done? Looking for places north of Seattle.

It's for a 3.4

Napa can do most of the machine work you need. They have a good reputation around here (at least on my side of the puget sound), and they aren't too expensive. I've never had any problems with the work they do.

I never really considered them. I'll definitely look into it.

I know a really good shop but its on this side of the water near Kingston. I can get you the number if you want to go that far.

Yeah, PM me the number. If it's the cheapest I find, I'll go there.

Re: Good shops to do head work

The Arlington NAPA has always been good to me, but I've never had any block or head work done there. Just mostly turning rotors. On the plus side they've been around awhile, so hopefully they do quality stuff.

BTW, where did you pick up the 3.4 at?

I don't know, my dad picked it up from some guy that hand a bunch of motors. I believe it's from a 95 Camaro with low miles. It's VERY clean.

Very nice. What work do you plan on getting done to it?

Most of the Napa stores have a brake lathe, but there are only (I think) 2 different stores around that can do any machining beyond turning brakes, and whichever Napa you drop your stuff off at just sends it away.

Re: Good shops to do head work

The Arlington NAPA is actually one of the larger stores in the State. They have a shop attached to the side which is why I believe they can do the work.

However, from what I've seen they are also car guys who would know a shop in the area to do the work.

Probably complete rebuild. Unless the crank and whole rotating assembly looks fine, I won't bother with the bottom end/pistons. Head work, then get a delta cam, headers, full exhaust, full roller rockers, all new valvetrain, gasket match the plenum. A/C and Smog delete. Lighter flywheel, all new clutch kit.

Re: Good shops to do head work

Yeah, I went to school with the guy that owns the blueish-purple Cougar. So I can ask there if they do machine work or know a good place to. I also have a friend that can do both heads for around $500 (is that good?).

Re: Good shops to do head work

Do what to the heads? IMHO $500 sounds like a lot of a basic rebuild of heads... outside of milling them if they have any warp to them I can't think of anything that couldn't be done at home on a work bench.

I've never done it before and don't want to screw anything up.

Re: Good shops to do head work

That is fair enough. If you do decide to try it yourself and something does go wrong, I've got spare 3.1 heads you can have.
