I measured from the top of the rear intake bolt to the wiper cowl, 8 1/2". Standard deck MarkIV.
Making an air pan without the motor mocked up is challenging. Look forward to some pics. I made one for a SBC years ago.

TOP PHOTO
ya having to drop the air cleaner down almost 3" to clear the 5" cowl hood. and still have a filter the size I want..and then seal it to the hood.. most of the time ya can cheat and use a larg Aluminum cake pan 13x17" with a 2" or shorter depth..to start off with..
Bottom photo
to small/short of a filter for me..(my thinking) have others (dont like the looks of them)

A cake pan can also be used to mock up this type of air filter base (drop base) having to do something like it..to get it dropped down..tryn to get a ball park

I made this one as a mock up, then was going to duplicate it out of aluminum, but went another route with the engine. I ordered a weiand blower for the 454 a year ago but it never came in. Got a refund of course. But i put a big pro stock looking scoop on the car in the mean time. I've got this Allstar air pan i've been meaning to install.

this is what Im trying to keep it under. Glastek 5" bolt on cowl..
when I made my intake. I did not put a tilt/rake on it (back carb mount sitting higher).. no need with EFI. so it sits level on the eng.. as the cowl on the hood runs out level to mid way..then nose dives down..to the front.. with this in mined..So made the intake. at the hight.. it should fit..when I had R2C make the air cleaner. they added a bulge to the top and bottom to the base and lid. this added almost 3" to the setup.. (now I have to work it out)...from the dot I put in the pic I posted to the top of my Clear air cleaner lid is 16 1/2" (lol). with the short aluminum cleaner its 13 1/2" and from the rear bolt ya just take off 1"..
want to keep the blow out plates and the NOS plates.. (keeps the TB linkage arms from hitting the top of the intake) as i did not have them in hand when i did the intake..(silly me).
and I had the air cleaner made with it moved forward.. so I don't have to cut into the hood brace that runs across the back of a bolt on Glass hood. You can just see how its pulled forward.=.more filter to the front.... this filter is 3 1/2" tall..
so..new Aluminum base. To drop it 2" down.. and have them make me a 2nd filter..at 2 1/4" tall that will drop it 3 1/4"..( only after i Get it to fit my set up thats at 13 1/2" tall..(thats the aluminum set up up op) but gining me 1 1/2" more filter..as the aluminum set up top is less then a 2" tall filter (1.879")
thank you @Orr89RocZ and @redneckjoe for taking the time to check that..kicking my self for thinking it would be a simple fix with ordering air cleaners...

Re: anybody with a BBC in there car. need a measurement.
After having multiple setups and hoods, I really hate tall cowl or scoop heads even for racing. The worst setup was a 6" tall cowl. Not just the height but the width made it very hard to look around.
If for race only, an air filter isn't really required but some sort of screen over the carb etc should be used just to keep any rocks that might get kicked up. A regular manifold and single carb/TB generally does not have much of a clearance issue however a drop base air cleaner is normally used. Downside of a drop base is the air flow direction changes a lot. A more direct route is preferred. Using a K&N top cover helps a lot.
My engine doesn't really sit in the stock location because I use front and rear motor mounts. I have the engine pushed back and dropped down as low as possible. With a tunnel ram and dual Flying Toilets, I was able to cover it all up with a simple 2-1/2" cowl and a very short (about 4") bolt on aero scoop without running any sort of filter. I found the scoop grabbed a lot of air and was lifting the back of the fiberglass hood as I was crossing the finish line. Since then I've removed the aero scoop and fabricated a hilborn style scoop directly to the top of the toilets. Vision is much better, the hood doesn't lift and it looks so much better poking out of the hood. Since it's a race car, it's not like it's going to be driven in rain or anything like that.
