Removing Front Crash Bar

One of the guys on the board was asking me if I had removed my front crash bar. I did that mod a few years back and just wanted to post some pictures of what I did. I saw this done to a car at the NHRA national event in Charlotte. The support is a 1/8" x 3" piece of aluminum I picked up from Lowe's.

Let me state. Do not think about doing this on a car that will see the street. Please be smart!!!

Re: Removing Front Crash Bar

Both my front and rear crash bars were removed many years ago but my car is rack only. I don't use any support in the rear but fabricated a simple lightweight tubework to hold the nose shape at high speeds. At over 100 MPH, the rubber nose gets really squished without some sort of support.

Re: Removing Front Crash Bar

i took my crash bar off, but made a light weight brace out of some angle. i added a few tabs to hold the nose up like you did. i'll have to get a new pic one day.

I left the rear bar on. I like to have the extra weight back there as my car is a little down on power still.

Re: Removing Front Crash Bar

this thread inspired me to take the front crash bar out today. i notice everyone else took the whole nose of the car off. i figure out how to get it out without doing all that but it took some work.

Re: Removing Front Crash Bar

I built a front support out of 1/2 chromoly that bolted in the factory location. I bent it to the shape of the nose to keep the shape at high mph. Worked great for 4 years. I'm adding fender headers so I had to cut the front of the frame off. I boxed it and will add a 1 5/8 chromoly support now for a lower radiator mount.

Re: Removing Front Crash Bar

i'm surprised ya'll are all leaving the frame horns still intact. here's the GTA we're putting together as it sits. gonna build our frame out of aluminum angle and box tubing we want it as light as we can afford to get it.

i'll make sure i update this with what we come up with. hoping to get going on that part of the project in the next two weeks.

Re: Removing Front Crash Bar

I know this is an old thread, but what have people seen for weight savings when taking the front crash bar off?

Re: Removing Front Crash Bar

30lbs if removing a steel crash bar. less if you have an aluminum one. (aluminum really only available on some early 4 cyl cars honestly)
