RESULTS! 1st passes with 370 and t56
RESULTS! i got some video and know kinda what i'm looking at now. looks like the slicks are basically shot. they were used and abused when i got them, but i couldn't pass up 50 bux on them. i did manage a 1.66 60' on them with 5500rpm and 12.75psi. i went down as low as 12psi, where i sixtied a 1.74. best pass of the night was after the exhaust came off (i'm sure it's not restrictive, maybe the weight of an over the axle system) which went 11.24 @ 125. here's two videos. first one is my 1.66 60', 11.29 @ 123. second is my 11.24 @ 125.
got to meet Brandon (86iroc2try) it was great getting to talk with my MD thirdgen brother!

It might be me but the video "doesn't exist" according to you tube.

And a quick question: What does your exhaust consist of? Collector length, muffler location, tailpipes, etc.

Now that's what I like. If I were to do it all over again, I'd definitely build a manual trans car. I love the sound of the shift. Great stuff. (And yes, it appears you may have a little traction issue). Get a new slick that's more designed for a stick car and you're in business.
Well done.

Yup, get a stiff wall slick and your 10's. I'm dying to hit the track, I'm all ready to go but due to work I wont make a pass for 3 more weeks. Your post is inspiring.

Hey matt...yea it was great finally getting to hang out.
That last pass sounded like a LOT of clutch slipping after the tires started to grab. I was right there next to you and definately a lot of slip. Just something to look into.
Way to go for a first time out. And i liked that mph on the last pass. Btw...we brought home the runner up trophy at 1:30am. Lol

lol, for sure on the gears! the last pass was open exhaust, so maybe that was the difference? it didn't feel like the clutch was slipping...hard to say.
congrats to your buddy! we left right after i saw you in the bleachers.

Sorry, I didn't see this post till now. Not sure on collector length, but its a single 4" over the axle, dynomax ultraflow in stock location, and single tailpipe out the left. Gonna sell the system, do a 4" bullet under the car, then do a single 3" after the bullet over the axle. Will drop exhaust for race days.

As an example from personal experience, my little slug picked up 2 mph in the 1/8th simply by uncorking the cutout I have which is right before the stock location muffler. This is more likely due to reduced backpressure the overall system sees as it's a 10 series (!) Flowmaster that has a very limited flow capability however it certainly validated my installing the cutout in the first place. A change in tune was certainly not out of the question.
Just thinking...

Re: RESULTS! 1st passes with 370 and t56
The reason I asked is because other than the savings in weight perhaps you're getting a boost in performance with the different exhaust configuration. There may be a little pulse wave tune going on. Considering that you've changed the point where the exhaust enters the atmosphere there is certainly a change in the low pressure pulse and when it reaches the exhaust valve. Whether it's helping your performance is another thing altogether. Of course that's also dependant on the cam profile, compression and timing. With the programs available, like PipeMax, it's something you could calculate. (IIRC you're a man of science yes?)

Something has to slip, either the clutch or the tires. If you get better traction and the clutch holds, you'll probably slow down.
Pulse tuning is driven by the Y. The two tubes meeting has the same effect as an H or X pipe in a dual exhaust system. If uncorking improved ET/MPH, it means you reduced back pressure. Either that, or the air got better and it had nothing to do with uncorking the exhaust.

Re: RESULTS! 1st passes with 370 and t56
i think after talking to some folks, i'm going to go to a M/T 3053S tire, which is a 26x10 stiff wall tire. this will be the same as going to a 4.56 gear over my 4.10 gears. my clutch is probably not going to slip, so i'm counting on the tires slipping some. right now i'm going through the traps at 6000 rpm, this change should put me through at 65-6800. i'm also still not done dialing in the carb tune so lots of work to be done.

Awesome runs! How is your rear suspension set up? I noticed that when you launched, the rear of the car didn't squat at all, in fact the back of the car actually came up a little bit. Once I get my new LS into my IROC, one of the biggest problems I expect to have is traction due to my car being lowered.
Oh yeah, and what does your car weigh?

lca relocation brackets
jegster non adjustable torque arm
spohn non adjustable panhard rod
founders upper panhard rod support
spohn offset rod ended lca's
competition engineering 3 way adjustables. i was thinking about these yesterday....i think they may be 12-14 years old....they were on my dad's car back before i got my license, lol!!! they are DEFINITELY in need of a replacement.
the scales were off at MIR the other night, so i couldn't weigh. my guess is 3500lbs with me in it.

Re: RESULTS! 1st passes with 370 and t56
Have you tried any different launching techniques? Next time out instead of holding it at your launch rpm and just dumping the clutch, try flooring it and when the rpms get to the desired rpm then dump the clutch. Ive always had luck with this technique. Less bog off the line on a carb car.
It dosnt seem like your boging now but if the tires hook you might.

i'm leaving off the floor on a 2step....if it bogs, i'll turn the 2step up, lol
i need new tires first before i can start doing much else. these tires were bought used and were on a fourthgen with a 427" lsx and a t56....i only bought them cause they were 50 bux and i anticipated going to the track with the 5.3 again. didn't think we'd be this far along at this point in the season honestly. some new 3053S's will help, and some DA rear shocks too....just need to come up with some $$$

oh, and i know that i was bracket racing, and i redlit in both videos, but that first pass with the guy in the disco nova was awesome. he was a stripped down racecar, with forward facing scoop, lexan and all, and i had him covered by a solid 6-7 mph....

Re: RESULTS! 1st passes with 370 and t56
FWIW, I 60 footed fairly consistently 1.62-1.64 on my lowered car. 4.30 gear, 4500rpm dump. The LCARBs were the biggest help, and turned out the middle hole worked significantly better resulting in less shock and a much smoother feel. I too have a spohn adjustable tq arm, panhard, Founders lcas, Eibach Pro Kit, and was running a simple kyb gr2 shock. So yeah...launching a lowered car is possible. If you're in the weeds lowered you might have to work at it more though.

I know this is just a private celebration, but when I see the cars being offloaded from the trailer, with cookie cutters on the front, slicks on $300 rims, fiberglass hood, open headers, stripped interior, racing seat, monster tach, shift light, with more in their paint job than I've got in my car, and then I tree, outrun, and run closer to the dial than them, there's just a certain bit of satisfaction in that...

i will admit though, at this power level and sticky tires, i'd be foolish to not bring the car on the trailer, lol. the car has it in it to trap 130mph, just gotta get the tune dialed. eventually, i would like to run drag week though, so i'll start "training" for that by driving the car in without the trailer.

i love it! talking to some bracket racers you'd think you were in the presence of a nuclear engineer with all the electronic doo-dads, special slow release buttons, tire covers, weather stations, throttle stops, topend retard buttons and whatever other stuff...... but then some guy in a stock lumina takes them out. lmao

Mine has done fairly well as a backup car while the Firebird is under the knife. A little on the inconsistent side, but what fun is it when the car runs dead on every pass?

Re: RESULTS! 1st passes with 370 and t56
Your clutch is allot better than mine Matt. My centerforce was near its limit and allowed a little slip upon clutch release. Allowed the tires to bits and then the RPM would drop a touch then climb again.
If you can feather it right, you will be good. I was mid 1.5s all day every outing with the 4.30s and 26x11.5x16s. They are old and still dead hook. I keep them stored and deflated in the dark corner of the garage is probably why they last?
Anyway, knowing you, you will have it dialed in, in no time at all.

I used to literally be the guy in a stock lumina.....you had to leave off of the 2nd yellow on the tree......cut under .020 all the time, and run within .01-.02 all day and all night. It was a simpler time......

The one and only 2.8 car I had(88 bird) was torqy off the line for 10 feet and that's it. Probably very consistent.

In my Lumina, I left at the same spot as my then-stock Firebird. First hit ever with it was -.008 red lol. Pulled quite a few .00x, with the best being .002. However, it was not consistent at all. Variations of 2 tenths were not uncommon. I've run anywhere from 16.30 to 16.90 with it lol.
