Winter upgrades
I decided I would start this thread to show what I have purchased so far this winter for my car and what else I will be doing with it. First of all, I bought a custom built carburetor from BIGS performance. I then bought some 28x10.5" slicks, and a 9" moser rear end. The rear end is where i have started most of my work as of now. I have also purchased brakes for it from the Right stuff detailing and I finally got me some new wheels! Here are some progress pictures of what I have been doing....
This is where it all began...
Now getting it put together... here is the pinion carrier getting put together...
Center section all put together...
Now checking the wear pattern...
All put together....
Now with the brakes attached...
Here are the new wheels... Summit Fast five 15x8 5.5 BS on the rear and 15x4 on the front! Havnt mounted the new tires and slicks yet. Will be doing that tomorrow at work. The fronts will be 165/80/15 Kumho's...
And last here are the fronts...
Been a rough working environment this year. Recently moved in to a condo so was unable to have my car in my own garage. My grandparents went to florida for a month of winter, so I am now capitalizing on their garage space, lol! Should get it all put together and in the car in the next couple of weeks. I put in a 4.11 gear and kept the tru trac posi unit in it. I'm hoping to be able to run a little quicker and a little bit more consistent with the slicks. Hopefully this year I can improve my times even more and run a little bit better in points, lol!

Re: Winter upgrades
Well, that's debatable. The C7AWE case is the most common late model case but it's not indestructible. His sig says he's only running high 11's so it should last for a long time. The pilot bearing support is the weak link and if it ever breaks, it will spit the pinion out the side of the diff. I don't think the car is heavy enough or has enough torque yet for that to be an issue.
I used a C7AWE case into the 9's before I noticed the pilot bearing support was cracked. I swapped it out before it had a catastrophic failure. I got lucky. The pinion bearing o-ring was leaking and I pulled the pinion to fix it then saw the case was cracked.
Just something to keep an eye on.
Your 9" even with an OEM case is still a better option than trying to make a 10 bolt survive.

Nice! With an auto and the small block the 9" should live all day long.
I have the exact same setup (Moser 9", Right Stuff brakes) and it weighed in at 249lbs.
Just curious, aside from the bearing O-rings, did your housing come with an internal axle seal?

Re: Winter upgrades
86iroc2try - Thanks! My local track is one of those that prep is usually great on Sunday race days but terrible on test and tune nights. I figured I would save more money with a new rear and slicks and actually make decent passes still on test and tune nights then going there and spinning for days, lol.
Alky - You said exactly what I was thinking as well. Considering I'm only in the high 11s I wasn't going to mess with a nodular case until I go back into the motor. I figured if my 10 bolt could handle it to this point it would be a shame if the 9" couldn't, lol. I figure if I ever start heading towards 10s that is when I will upgrade the casing just to be safe.
UnstableAviator - I definitely hope it will last alot longer than the 10 bolt, lol! And I'm not sure if you meant from when purchasing the rear from moser if it came with it? But no it did not, it just has the outer seal where the retainer goes. It uses the gear lube to lube the axle bearing.

Re: Winter upgrades
I took my tires and wheels in to work today and I mounted and balanced them all up! Here are some pics...
And here is a look at the difference in width on these front runners and then the rears...
The rears with tires weigh 42lbs and the fronts weigh 33lbs with the tire. I'll have to weigh how much my buick wheels were when i get them off. I know that the wheels alone on the buick were 27 pounds so I should be shedding a couple pounds!

Mw66nova - Thanks man will do!
Billybob - Not yet unfortunately. I got off work at 7 last night and I mounted them there so I didn't really have time to put them on the car. I'm anxious to see how they look as well. I might have some pictures tonight though!

355sleeper - Thanks alot, feels good to finally be working on it again, lol.
1986Z28OWNER - Thanks! Our builds are pretty similar thats why your build thread is one I keep my eye on! You do alot of nice work.
Here are some more pics for you guys. I was test fitting the wheels and took a couple of pics. Sorry about the messy car, still has rubber from last season and needs a good wash. Once its all done I should have alot nicer ones for you guys! Oh and warmer weather would help some as well, lol.
I will have to do a little bit of massaging in order for the rears to fit more comfortably. But they tuck alot nicer than before and the setup looks alot meaner!

billybob6110 - Thanks alot man! And the tires are kumho powerstar 165/80/15 tires, they are usually put on old volkswagons. And the backspacing on these front runners only come in one size which is 1.75" backspacing. They are nice wheels though! Only thing is is the 5.5" backspacing needs some clearencing, not just a bolt on and go sadly.
355sleeper - I got mine painted at one in Garden City, Michigan. I would say do all the body work yourself and youll save alot of costs and the body work is usually what ultimately will make or break a paint job anyway. There are still a few more things i wish i wouldve done when i did the body on mine. But Maaco is definitely not bad at all at laying down the paint if you leave them a good base to start with!

15x10 with 5.5bs is pretty much standard on these cars and lots of us run 6.5bs and do some cutting and hammering to make it fit. I personally prefer the tucked tire look over the shackled up 70s race car with part of the tire sticking outside the fender.

Re: Winter upgrades
All I had to do on mine was roll the fender in a tad. Main reason I did that was to keep the tire from being cut when the rear squats when I take off at the track. But i also had a 275/60/15 drag radial on there as well.

Yeah I rolled the fender when i first bought the car and I did not have relocation brackets at the time. I got relocation brackets last year! They definitely helped alot, my lca angle was pretty far off before hand.

Rearend is finished! It's come a long way. Im pretty happy with the way it turned out!
Where it started:
Now:
Here is a pic of the brake line, showing how we had to make it fit without issues.
Should be getting the whole thing put in in the next week or so!

Re: Winter upgrades
The rear end is finally in! I took your guys advice and welded the relocation brackets before I installed it. I was doing some planning before and didnt really see anyway to get around welding them any way. So here are some pictures of the car being all done!
I drove it around the neighborhood a bit but not too far since i had the slicks on there, but it feels nice! I had to do some cutting to get the rear wheels to fit but they fit now with a slight rub on the right side. I'm buying an adjustable panhard rod now so that i can fix that problem. Also, did anyone else have a problem with the rear sway bar not fitting on their 9 inch? Is there one to purchase that will fit? Thanks, and here are those pictures!
Here is the rearend in the car and ready for the wheels to be bolted on...
Heres a pic of the rear of the car...looks mean!
And here are a couple pics of the car outside! It was a little nicer today, but still cold!

About the same here in Ohio lol. I'm having the same issues with the sway bar. Mine fits other than the U-clamps, they aren't a large enough radius for the Moser axle tubes. Guessing that's what you're referring to. I'm thinking about getting 2 3" exhaust clamps in place of them, and just heating up the sway bar half and bending it ever so slightly to fit the bigger clamp. That's the plan anyway, I'll let you know how it works

Re: Winter upgrades
I actually had purchased the 3" exhaust clamps already and it looked like those would work. So if that was your issue you might be able to solve it by using those. However, my problem is the u-bolts would be about 2 inches away from the clamp when i was trying to put it in because the sway bar was hitting the torque arm mount where the bolts go in. It seems the design of the swaybars bends cant get around the torque arm mount bolt holes.
Edit: Actually some reading led me to see that this seems to be a very common thing and people were pointing to this kit...

Re: Winter upgrades
I think I am going to purchase the brackets xpndbl posted. Also, I just bought a non-adjustable a year ago and it worked great but now the left side sticks out about an inch or 2 further than the right. Which makes the right tire rub a tad bit. Oh well, it will help if i ever decide to lower the car in the future lol.

Re: Winter upgrades
typically it's an issue, not sure why i've never seen it on this car i'll never know, lol.
i will probably get some weld-on mounts for my car too. while these aren't bad, they still move around a bit. i need to pull my rearend out and detail like ya'lls, and clean and paint under the car...mine looks like the trailer trash it is compared to some of these cars!

Re: Winter upgrades
Alright it's been awhile since I updated this. Anyway, the car is back together and I've taken it for a couple of test drives. The track opened today and im heading down there tomorrow to see what it runs! But I have a few pics for you guys just showing what Ive been doing finishing it up!
First off here is the driveshaft...
Then I got the new adjustable panhard rod installed, also the sway bar mount kit installed and the driveshaft in so now the car was ready to be let off the jacks finally...
Also just changed carbs today. Finally had to get rid of my faithful q-jet. It had a good run. The new carb is a BIGS custom tuned carb. I'm excited to see what it will do for me tomorrow.(If you are wondering about the funnel, I was in the process of changing the oil, lol).
And last but not least... I finally washed the car! So here are some nice shots for you guys.
car3_zpsfe14a6dd.jpg?t=1365281919
Anyways, Ill keep you guys updated on how well everything turns out tomorrow! Hopefully there aren't any bugs to be worked out.

Thanks man! And it was about 550$ with shipping. Not too bad but still a little pricey. It was definitely worth it though to have it setup for my car...well atleast I hope it was, lol. I wont find that out till tomorrow!
