NHRA Div V ET Finals this weekend 9/14-16

I've got Ugly Betty at Topeka this weekend. Rained Thursday night, supposed to be nice the rest of the weekend.

Hopefully we won't run first round Sunday through a fog bank like we did 2 years ago...

Time to edit the car info: 11.95 @ 114 with a not-so-great 60'. Well, and a 5 mph tail wind...

It's supposed to be warmer the rest of the weekend, so it will probably be back in the 12's.

Good luck. I finally get some track time this Sunday and with the cool weather, I expect some good ET's. Depends what the low pressure front will do as it rolls in tomorrow. I was hoping for some high pressure, cool air and lower elevation for some good passes. I still expect to crack into the 8 second range even with bad air.

Good luck. As if you really need more hardware.

Don't "need" more hardware? What's "need" got to do with it???

1 time trial Friday morning. Early afternoon get a 1st round jackpot win when the other guy goes red. 2nd round boneheader - double pumped the brake at the hit, thinking I was anticipating, resulted in a .1+ light. And, it chattered the tires off the line (probably weren't completely dry from the burnout). The 9.10 car in the other lane had a .06 light, but backed off to a 9.14 to my 11.98 on a 11.97 dial.

Saturday was one time trial at 8 am, no tail wind, DA 1400', ran another 11.95 (made completely sure the tires were dry - the burn-out area is rather short at HPT). Good 60', light not so good but green. First round of jackpot wasn't until 3 pm, DA went up to 2700, still no wind, so I dialed 12.02 thinking it would slow down. I'm paired with a 10.45 dial car. I gave up .01 at the tree, heard him backing off at about 1200', I backed off at the stripe, only took off 1 mph, but it ran a 11.98 - double break-out with me breaking out .005 more than the other guy. Done for the day.

So far this weekend, my ET's in 5 passes are all within .03 of each other. My 60' have varied more than that.

Sunday morning, no time trials, the lowest I can dial in Sportsman is 12.00. So, I'll be racing the stripe. Based on how it ran this afternoon, I'll probably just dial 12.00 until the car tells me different (or until I lose, whichever comes first).

Snake bit...

1st round, dial my 12.0, but wasn't sure it would be that slow. DA was same as Saturday afternoon, but humidity is 94% (which usually makes it slow down more than the DA alone would indicate). I'm paired with a 2nd gen Camaro with paint that's about as ugly as mine, except it's also missing body parts (valances, for instance), no mufflers, skinny fronts, hood scoop, and dials 12.75. We both go green, I'm catching him, he lifts, I'm afraid I'm going to break out so I lift and take off 8 mph - he only takes off 1 mph, gets the win light. I turn up the radio to hear the track announcer say, "...with a triple zero reaction time..." He runs a 12.84 and takes .02 stripe. I run a 12.06 with a so-so .057 RT.

I do the math - if I hadn't lifted I would have run a 12.0x or 12.01 - i.e., I wouldn't have broken out. Next round he dials a 12.83, leaves first with a .060 light and runs a 12.87 after the other guy goes red. 3rd round he again leaves first, .068 RT, 12.90 dial and runs a 12.85 and loses to a .011 light and .004 break-out in the other lane.

I probably shouldn't do this to myself, but looking through the results, in the other 69 first-round pairs, my light was better than 34 of the winners.

It's a good thing I don't do this for a living. Last time I had a round win in this race was 2007.

Oh, there were a bunch of 3rd gens at this race. More than I think I've ever seen. The eventual Sportsman ET winner was a '92 Z (he'll need mufflers before he shows up in Pomona in November). Several 3rd gens in Sportsman, a couple in High School, many in both Pro and Super Pro. It seems to be the up and coming platform of choice.

I think it'll take awhile before the 5th gens catch on, though...
