New fastest ET
Alot of you guys have been following my car in another thread, but since that was talking mainly about fuel issues i figured i'd better start one about how my car is doing now.
Well my last time at the track i told you guys it went a 12.67 at a 106.16. Since then all ive done is put an electric water pump on and changed to an s10 manual steering box from my power steering.
My new time is...
12.28 @ 109.45 mph. With the timing at 35*.
The slip goes like this..
Rt: .02
60 ft: 1.7061
330 ft: 5.0091
1/8 ET: 7.8021
1/8 MPH: 87.88
1000' ET: 10.2262
1000' MPH: 100.43
1/4 ET: 12.2832
1/4 MPH: 109.45
I'm pretty excited about pulling that time off, im swapping my worn out 275/60R15 radials for 275/50R15 tires. I'm hoping that will give me enough top end mph to maybe snag an 11.99 pass on a good DA day. I was also shifting at 6800 rpm. My car specs are in my signature!

I was also pretty surprised? But the electric water pump was allowing me to run the car really cool, and it really seemed to like that!
I'm hoping to be able to get that 2 mph with the 26" tire! But who knows, hopefully they dont make my et go the other way.

great time. my engine specs are just about the same as yours and am glad to see that time is very realistic.
Are you using a stall?
What do you think your car weighs?
thanks

Re: New fastest ET
I am using a stall its a 3500. I'm footbraking to about 2500 before i take off. Anything past that and i start to roll forward.
Also, i know my car weighed 3300 with me in it before the electric water pump and manual steering. And those were a 50 pound removal so id say raceweight with me in it's 3250.

Streetlethal - Thanks. I was thinking the same, i still have the stock 10 bolt with an eaton posi in it so im nervous to try and push the 60 too much but i still am running my stock lca's so i think i might purchase some relocation brackets since my lca's are parallel to the ground.
Orr - Yeah this electric water pump was a pain to put on, it's the main reason why i got a manual steering box, because the electric water pump didnt have the bracket for the power steering. Also, i did not mess with fueling. This q-jet that i put on has worked at a 12.97 with the other cam and it seems like it just puts the perfect amount of fuel with whatever part i throw at it,haah. I've been hesitant to mess with it because of all the fuel issues i was previously having, im just happy to have a consistent low 12 second car. I do want to touch an 11.99 though

Yeah im not too sure if the 26" will get me that extra 2 mph or not. I just got them in today so hopefully sometime next week i can get some updated times. I'm hoping the 28" was just a little too big.

Re: New fastest ET
Yeah i purchased a proform electric water pump because it was pretty inexpensive. I did however, find out why it was so cheap. It took alot of fabricating to get that in there. I had to drop the altenator some so that the belt on it wouldnt hit the water pump, and then like i said i would have had to do some more stuff to get power steering to work so i figured manual would just be worth it to do for the price and weight savings. So just a forewarning for anyone else going that route. It did help alot apparently with the track though.

Re: New fastest ET
Yeah the electric water pump was mainly for the cooling of the motor as i already have an electric fan switch which could cool it pretty well, but i figured the electric pump would do the trick. Which it did. Alot less time between time trial runs now, i just drive right on up and can cool the car with the car off now.
Also, it could have been tight or something, i know that the belts that were on there were pretty worn.
Another thing, i've been looking to get aluminum brake drums and i was wondering what are the gains in doing that? Just a minor little thing since i could pick some up at a local junkyard if it was worth it. Would they be able to allow me to be able to torque the car up a little more before take off? And i heard they are 10 pounds lighter total than the two rear iron brake drums. I also read something about rotational mass making it more, i know its not alot just a little added bonus for some rear brakes i need anyway.

I am speechless as to how close your times are to my old combo's times.
My best ET with my Vortec head, 10:1 compression 355 with XE274 was:
12.28 @ 111.85
Car was 3050 lbs empty, 3300 with me in it. I would imagine you will have more left in your combo with a bigger cam and more compression that I had. It's just pretty cool that they are the same ET down to the tenth. How much timing do you run? I picked up several MPH going from 38* total to 36*. Your car also 60's better than my old car did. Let me see if I can find a timeslip.

Were anything done to your heads? Also what tire size and gear did you have?

3.73's and a 26" tall tire, I always ran it on radials with a hughes 3000 stall. The car was funny it would never 60' really exceptional, not sure why. On slicks it didn't seem to go any faster ET wise and would lose MPH on the big end. I found my post from when I ran 12.28:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/orga...ls-friday.html
RT: .036
60': 1.869
330: 5.133
1/8: 7.889
mph: 89.27
1000': 10.270
1/4: 12.284
mph: 111.85

Wow, yeah you were getting some good mph there. That combo should have easily gotten 11's with a lower 60 foot! I'm running 28" tall tires i just bought the exact tire size you were using, hopefully that will give me the same mph you had!

Re: New fastest ET
All my car's combinations over the years and my 99 LS1 car all run best 60 foots in footbraking as high an rpm as the brakes and/or tires can hold. I've tried off idle flashes, i've tried half way footbrake flashes and full footbrake stalls and the full footbrake always ran faster

Thats the same with my car. I would rev to 2500 and i could feel the tires wanting to budge and then i'd launch and get a good run. If only i could get 2-300 more rpms at the light so i could really take off.

Re: New fastest ET
OK here i have a picture of the new tires! mounted on the wheels now showing the difference in tread and size!
Also, i included a picture of what my lca's look like. It seems to me like they slope up towards the back wheel. I've read they are supposed to have a downward angle? I am pulling 1.68 60 ft at best in these, so i was wondering if lcarb will put too much on my rearend and snap it?

Oh okay, so run the middle hole? I see alot of people say the bottom hole but im thinking like you said the middle one would probably give me a more slight slope down the backside? Would it improve my 60 foot?

Re: New fastest ET
I run bottom on my car. I've done both middle and bottom and no real difference at the track but on the street, on my car, the middle one keeps LCA parallel with the ground... bottom is downward slope. It does have effect on handling feel. Handles better with middle hole, but at the track I ran bottom just to make sure it planted tires.
On my 99 ta, my bars were going UP towards the back, worse than your pic and it still did a 1.68 60 I believe. I put it on the bottom hole to make things "correct" and went 1.66 but I dont think the change alone was the cause for that. Just a better night with less weight in the car

Re: New fastest ET
the problem i was having with my car on the bottom hole is that it would smack the tires really hard, and was causing it to wad the tire up. with no real adjustment in the shocks, it was bouncing around, unloading the tires when it did so. in the middle hole it hits them a little less, and is much more consistent.
you'll just have to try it and see really...

Yeah, the planting hard to the ground is what i was worried about. I just dont want to break a rearend over a minimal gain in 60 foot.

Im running a th350/3.73 gears and 26" tall Hoosier QTP's. Loosing the 28" tires should help. I am also running LCARB's in the bottom hole. The car with me and a 1/2 tank of gas is 3400 lbs. You can compare my mph/et/60 ft times in my sig. Yes, I should be in the 11's with my mph. Just some info for you to compare to.

I should be going to the track again tomorrow with my 26" tires so i will let you guys know what i run! I also upgraded my rear brakes to two large brake shoes and now i can brake torque to 2900 instead of around 2400 so hopefully thatll allow me to take off just a little harder!

And yes, I am running the stock 10 bolt with Richmond gears. If my race weight was like yours, I would be in the 11's no problem.

I'm shocked youre not in the 11's haha. Very nice 60 foot as well. You're running a 10 bolt still right? And your heads are what i'd love to have, but my vortecs are getting the job done for now!

Oh wow really? What broke? sorry to hear that! I went friday night! It ran a best of 12.49 at 107.45. I wasnt hooking well at all though, i think those lcarb's are going to help me alot more now. i was getting 1.80's and 1.78 60 foots compared to my 1.68 and 1.70's. I think the bigger 28" tire was helping with traction with how off my lca's are. But it was also really hot! the DA was around 3000 compared to 1600 when i made the 12.28.

My car broke a roller lifter wheel, split the ring right in half. I`m running springs that are 400 seat and 1000 pounds of open pressure over the nose (.825 lift) Of course it pops at the big end at high rpm so I have yet to see all of the damage but I know we will need to look at the all the lifters closely, repair the cam lobe, hope and pray the needles didnt do too much damage as they made their way to the bottom and thru the oil system. totally new engine 10 passes old. we trying for 8`s on motor pretty hard but nothing that would compromise the parts that quick

Re: New fastest ET
our set ups are real close.
ive finally made time to work on my car again. i swapped out the 700r4 for a 350 with a 3k stall, switched to an adjustable torque arm, founders lcarbs and lcas. i also got the 650 jetted right also switched out the street tires for 28x11.50 et streets. looking for that 11.99 pass also. my cam is a bit smaller than yours and less compression. closest track is an hour away, making time is the hardest part.
great job on working things out!!! looking foward to hearing about that 11 second pass

Re: New fastest ET
i will make the switch soon though.
your rear should be fine, the secret to making a small rear last is taking as much weight as possible out of the car. and your car is pretty light.
what rpms are you shifting at? and what kind of rpms are you seeing going through the traps?

Re: New fastest ET
i was intending on it but ran into some other snags, needed a new driveshaft(long tail to short tail), and subframe connectors, and now i have an overheating problem, so i got a griffin radiator and flex a lite 298 fans instead.
i will make the switch soon though.

I actually run some really high rpm's that i wasnt expecting. But the car just keeps pulling and i noticed that if i shift lower my mph at the end of the track suffers alot. The car does the 1-2 shift at 6200, and then i do the 2-3 shift at around 6800-6900(with my new 26" tire). And then at the traps im right around 6500. So im pretty far up there in the rpm's but so far so good!

Re: New fastest ET
Is that a decent amount of slippage? I also was only running 107 mph with the 26" tire. See i was thinking that my cars tach was off cause i think 7000 rpms is just way too high and my dad sat half track and said the car didnt sound like it was revving too high at all.
