Re:91 RS vs 79 Trans Am

You wanna check again on what kind of engine she has? From my knowledge, you could only get a 400, 403, or 301 in the Trans Ams. I have a '79 Firebird, and before i got the GTA, I would spend all my time reading up on info about the 2nd gen Firebirds. I dont recall being able to get a 305 in one. Does she have a 4 speed or auto? Olds 403's came with the autos, the 400's came with the 4/speed and were doin 15.3's in the 1/4.

I never said you couldnt get a 305 in 2nd gens. I said you couldnt get one in a '79 Trans Am specifically. Maybe in a base Camaro or Firebird, but i dont see why anyone would want a 305 in a Trans Am when pontiac had their 301 (since the 301 and 305 were rated at the same HP). I have seen a '79 Trans Am with a 301, butnever seen one with a 305. Dont tell me i dont know what i'm talking about, like i said before, I own a '79 Firebird and read up on them before i got my GTA.

ok your info is right. in TAs for 79 the only engine options were the 301 400 and 403. if you find one with a 301 one its dog slow and two you may want to try and buy it its not very collectible as far as value but they didnt make a whole lot of them. not sure on the time they run even though i own one but the 4 speed cars were 400s and i believe the 4 speed was also offered with the 301. check the hood scoop if it is a 6.6 it is a 400 or 403. if it is a 403 with the stock gearing it is slow off the line if the gearing has been changed and she can drive it will leave hard and fast. the 400s are dang fast even now with only minor mods. considering that the 400 is the same as the ones put in the TAs in the early 70s only with smog equipment. if i didnt have rearend problems i could tell you what a 403 auto with a shift kit curve kit and SFC runs in the 1/4 with 2.73 gears but alas i have rearend problems. i think it will be close and come down to driver ability when you race. the 400s arent very nice off the line with radials too much torque but they will haul, the 403s will scream at high end if tuned right. and the 305 didnt show up in firebirds if at all until 81 maybe 80. camaro had them earlier than that which explains why late 2nd gen camaros suck as far as performance goes. have fun TINFY
