racing tips
I'm going street racing this friday at the New Carrolton Metro station (people from MD will know what i'm talking about). Last week, I raced a 1970 Chevelle Malibu and whooped his *** by 4-5 car lengths. I also shifted my 700-R4 manually with shift points at 5100 (1-2) and 5200 (2-3). Is that about where I should be shifting? and how come manually shifting it produces better times than keeping it in full automatic?

teh car is quicker going manual becasue the factory set the shift points with economy in mind, we kinda forget that little gas mileage thing while racing.
that is about the right shift point for your car, maybe a few hundred rpm more would work, around 5400 for both.

With the 700R4 you should shift the 1-2 higher than the 2-3. The gear ratio in first gear is too low. When you shift to second at that lower rpm, the engine is to low in rpm when it starts building in second gear. If you shift 1-2 higher, second gear will start at the bottom of your powerband instead of below it. Your times should improve if you do this.
It's a trial and error method to determine the best shift point. If you feel the 2-3 shift is good at 5200 then shift the 1-2 at 5500. Unfortunalty the best 1-2 shift will be above your best redline to make the most power but that's the downside to racing a 700R4. That's why I ripped mine out and installed a TH350.

Best results before the 383 blew up
Best ET on a time slip: 11.857 altitude corrected to 11.163
Best MPH on a time slip: 117.87 altitude corrected to 126.10
Altitude corrected rear wheel HP based on power to weight ratio: 476.5
Best 60 foot: 1.662
Racing at 3500 feet elevation but most race days it's over 5000 feet density altitude!

so you dont think revving my 305 to 5500 rpm will damage the engine in any way? I understand what you were saying about how shifting high from 1st to 2nd will make 2nd gear start higher in the power band, so that makes sense. Also, I still have the stock converter, so i can only rev up to 1500 while sitting at a complete stop. any other tips?

5500 rpm won't hurt it. Another tip that will help you a little would be to put 45-50# of pressure in the front tires -- Don't drive on them too long like that, because they will wear in the center prematurely, but it won't hurt to air 'em up, go race, and then let 'em back down to the recommended pressure. Also, if your car has to do a lot of idling before running, cut on the heater, it will help keep the engine a little cooler.(don't have it set on defrost, though, because that turns on the air cond compressor!!) Taking out the jack, the spare, and the rear seats is always an option, because they easily go right back in, and don't let anybody ride with you, a 200# friend could be the difference in a close race!!
