86 TA project

As many of you know, my 89 RS doesnt do as well as it could with a stalled auto, it is a street car that gets minimal of 50 miles daily driven, so a 3 speed is out of the question, i just like driving it too much. But, the 86 TA i have right now with a vortec 355 and stalled built 700R4 is going to be ditching the current drive line and going with a TH350 with a stall and a 5.3 with a single turbo. I am not looking foreward to getting another rear for this car, but everything else will be fun, dont know how long this is going to take to get together, but it is surely going to depend on my business and what not. I have a oil pan i got for free with a crack, welded said crack, bought an LS1 Victor Jr intake, got a HP 750 carb for the NA use while i get the rest of the turbo parts and i have a selection of manifolds i will be using to figure out how i will route the ht side plumbing, so i have started, but have a wyas to go.

Here is the score today, i got the Vic Jr for 200$ new from a local guy/friend, then my other buddy doing a LS1 swap in his single turbo abandon project S10 decided he wanted that intake so bad he traded a few parts that actually set me ahead pretty good, i know i dont need the innercooler for a turbo setup, so that is getting sold as soon as i find out what it is worth and get a buyer lined up, but i got a 72 mm garrett, fresh rebuilt, as well as a turbonetice manual boost controller:

Here is the project car, i am working on getting a 4th gen wing for it as we speak:

I will be keeping updates on the drag project as i get more parts and change my mind on as uch stuff as i can, hope you guys like what i have going on.

Re: 86 TA project

please don't say the word "stall"...it's kinda like saying "NAWZ" for red-necks

otherwise looks to be interesting. you'll be suprised, you probably won't need near as much converter or gear as you might think with the turbo.

Re: 86 TA project

Well, in Texas, the term stall and stalled auto is the norm, Naws or whatever is for queers, LOL.

I am not going to have much stall speed in this car, 2500 or so, and more than likely use my 2.73 limited slip rear after the 3.23 gov lock breaks, from there, a 3.42 or so will be swapped in. See how long my mighty 2.73 will live after ditching the thick teeth down to the lower gear.

This is surely a learning project for me as well as going to be a blast.

"stall" and "stalled auto" isn't reserved for just texas...but it is reserved for ignorant red-necks that don't understand that all converters "stall"...

Well, so far, i have found out that the turbo unit itself will make enough power to break everything that is in the car right now if i used it on the 355 and swapped cams, LOL.

The term for us is a stock converter is a TQ converter and a higher stall speed is stalled to higher for racing purposes gets called a "Car with a stall and trans brake ect"

So, dont come to Texas then, because EVERYONE here uses the term.LOL

Re: 86 TA project

Well, here is the 5,3 that will be getting abused on boost when the rest of the project is in place, 2008 5.3 with 243 heads, i have a 6010 box that i was going to use, but now i have to ditch it for a 6012, no biggie, i just dont have the funds ot get a 6012 and sit on this one till i sell it.

Wanted the 243 heads and a good 5.3 with the newer rods, has 20K miles, or so the junk yard said, looks good.

Me and my entire group of car buddies always reffered to higher stalled cars as having a "stall" as well here on the est coast I thought it was a pretty common term....and we are far from red necks.

Zone, looks like a sweet project. 86 turbo 5.3 build. I like the ring in that, lol. I'll keep my eye on this.

Is this going to be a carb/turbo set up? I noticed there are no knock sensors in the valley cover. Is that a special peice for a carb conversion or something?

Yes, single turbo with a blow through carb.

This is a GEN IV 5.3, so the knock sensors are on the sides of the block relocated. As well as the cam position sensor is like aLS2 in the front timing cover.

Now, the one we actually fabbed up was nice, i just painted everything you see in the pic with VHT wrinkle finish black.

This is the one we made:

72mm is a good size. A lot of people have a ton of luck even on the 70mm's. I'm actually hoping my 76 isn't too laggy but I think I'll be fine with the .84 hot side. I wanted upgradability for a possible 6.0 in the future.

Re: 86 TA project

Motor and trans in, will build a custom trans mount later today after i get sleep, slotting the stock flex plate was a first for me, but i did so and fitted the converter and spun it over to eyeball it and it seems good enough for me to understand why no one has any issues, but i did get the over sized ARP converter bolts so the holes in the converter had to be rounded out to get them through as well.

Test fitted the headers ad made the decision to open the passenger side up to 3 inched since it can be done, there simply is that much material to do so. And i can slot the new flange that will be mating up to it just slightly for it to work. The driver side is goofy looking and will be hacked and altered. No pics of EGR pieces hacked off and welded, want necessary it think

Had to slot the clam shells as when using the cheap 40$ 1 inch set back adapters, they put the engine back in the right location but so not put the cam shell down so that it is a perfect bolt in, so i slotted the shells in abut 1/4 inch and was a very tight fit, i did get lucky on the motor mounts being urethane from the previous owner over 9 years ago swapping a 350 in, they still look good and solid.

The truck acc bracket proves the challenge of turbo routing to require attention later, so i might be going to different acc later, but for now, i think this will work great with the stock alternator in the truck bracket. Looke like it will clear my daytona turbo hood and maybe a Formula, i will test fit the formula hood i have laying around on a 85 TA to give some folks here insight. But a stock hood, i still have doubts.

Also, before the engine went in, i have decided to paint the car silver after she is running, and a red engine compartment, well, red or not, i had to do something since it looked like crap from the ages. And red compartment and silver exterior would have bothered the hell out of me.

Shifter cable and other parts will be in tomorrow, the Competition engineering subfram connectors i got are a mystery, i have no earthly clue hwo the hell they go in, so if anyone knows, please elaborate, they are straight square tubing and have mounting tabs on one end and thats is, paperwork mentioned the trans crossmember mounting area, but it isnt happening.

Looking good man! As far as the accesory bracket problem, I'll be using a relocation bracket form these guys. Looks like pretty nice quality and you can still use the truck water pump and balancer.

Ebay 80$ "ceramic" coated cheapos, they are actually decent asides from the 2.5 collector reducing and not actually allowing exhaust to exit smoother, so i am modifying the flanges for 3 inch anyway. The new collectors were only 15$, so it will be worth it i think.

Link to the headers? Any mods to make them physically fit the car?

The fit like they are supposed to be on it, they are 4th gen headers, direct replacement for manifolds:

Haha yea my build isn't exactly a "budget" build so thats the one I was using. I like that set up though. I'm assuming it has no way to use power steering, which I do want to keep?

Re: 86 TA project

Oh, we mocked that up for guys like yourself:

Looks like a truck manifold flipped on the drive side will be able to work with the truck acc bracket, sweet.

Got a trans X member made and the alternator clears my hood, and will clear a Formula hood, but a stock hood? Not sure, it would be close and i just dont have one laying around:

Alternator worked well:

The measuring tape marks where the alternator sits, so i think any cowl hood will work:

Re: 86 TA project

If you are speaking from and exhaust stand point, i am not putting duals on this car and i can route through the stock location if i canted, but i am notching one side(pass) for the I pipe to go by. Even if i didnt i think it would be the same as my 89, which actually doent drag very often at all.

Re: 86 TA project

Got some done today, been at it for about 8 hours, finished the trans X member, hogging out the header on the pass side, welding a new flange on the river side, got them on, got the starter installed, mocked the front with the WP i have, radiator and trans cooler is in, got the shifter properly installed with the cable, feels good except park for some reason, but i will see when i start it up one day.

I think i figure the competition engineering sub frames out. You have to chop them into a few pieces and weld them together, go figure.

TQ arm is in place and secure for temporary till the BMR piece is in. Drive shaft is in as well. Threw the carb on and the air cleaner, looks like i might need a drop base as the cowl ares is not as big as my 4 inch on the 89.

Need about 10 different things to finish, fluids, belt, hose, water pump, ect ect.

Re: 86 TA project

looking good. when you do the turbo, are you going to build a y-pipe from those headers or are you going to go with a set of flipped truck manifolds or something?

Re: 86 TA project

Looks like it will end up a combination of a truck manifold on the driver side and flipped upwards to clear the truck accessories, then aF body manifold on the passenger side. Should be interesting to make it all work, i think it will be pretty easy though. Just lots of parts i lack will be holding back for a while. Went broke getting the car this far.

Re: 86 TA project

Alright, i have been busy this morning, got the harness for the ignition plugged up to the sensors, still need to wire in the power, ground and tach, install the tach, fill it with coolant, trans fluid and get some fuel line and install the regulator, and then i should just need a oil and temp gauge setup and it will be in business for driving, once that is done, i will install the rear suspension and get the exhaust installed and sub frames. Then i can paint it, so i still have a ton of **** to do, LOL:

BTW, i had to do a touch of clearance on the pass side to clear a bolt on the LS2 coil bracket, not much but it has to be done:

Re: 86 TA project

Well, lopes pretty well, need to install the temp gauge and top off the trans but otherwise, the pan has a leak when i installed the shifter there was a stripped bolt so i suspect that is the reason.

Sounds like it runs good! what are the specs on the cam you've got in there? Not too big I'm assuming to be a turbo cam? I went with a stock LS6 cam in mine since I want it to sound stock and drive like stock till I give it some go pedal.

Re: 86 TA project

The specs arent exactly a TURBO CAM BUT BEING ON A 114 lsa I THINK I GOT A GOOD GRIND FOR ALL MOTOR AND THEN GOOD FOR BOOST, IT IS 225/229@.050 .582/.589 LIFT AGAIN ON A 114 lsa. sOUNDS GOOD SO FAR, damn caps on my lap top, LOL. Curious to see how hard and far it pulls, plewnty of LS1 guys have good luck with this grind so it should act a bit larger in the lesser cubed engine.
