Coverter locked or Unlocked for the track

I have a ATI 9" 3500 lock up converter with anti-ballooning plates and the works. My question to you is should the converter be locked or unlocked at the track?

Ive set the "TCC unlock prevention speed threshold" to be locked up at 90 MPH.

Now, this was a hot, and humid day, and my car ran the same best ET, and MPH, that it normally would in good air, and temp. I would have liked to stay later that night, as I went out in the second round, to play some more, but I had some hot starting issues, and called it a night. If I only was able to run it some more, I'm sure it would have went faster yet. My car never ran 11.60, at 118.5 in crappy air.

Next time out, I plan on taking a few more proms, with various lockup MPHs, to try. In all honesty, I'm sold on it. Thanks to 87_TA, as he mentioned this to try, a while back.

Hey Brutalform, thanks for the reply. If the weather holds out I'll be hitting the track saturday for some T&T. I've been running with my TCC unlock prevention set at 130 mph, so needless to say all my track times where run with the converter unlocked in 3rd gear.

The idea is to have the converter lock at 90, or whatever you set it at. In my case it will lock in third. As the converter locks it drops the RPMs into the band where there is more torque. My car is doing 94-95 MPH by the 1/8, so maybe it might like to be locked sooner. Next time out, I would like to go with an 90, 80, and 75 MPH lockup with some spare eproms.

I was trapping 93mph in the 1/8 with an unlocked converter, so I hope to run quicker when I get the chance. It'll be easy for me to make changes at the track when ever the rain stops. I took it out last night to test 90mph lock up and it pulles alittle harder up top, but I think I might play around 85mph and 80mph lock up onces ut stops raining.

Yes, you can definately feel it.

I'm going to try to go next Friday night. We only have a few more nights of street racing left.

I'd also like to know what effect consistently locking the converter up does to the converter itself, and how that effects converter life? My yank converter wasn't designed to be locked up at wot, but it has been locking up at wot forever, but appears to be ok.

A power adder I would think would wear it out faster. I guess we will find out when I get my heads back.

I guess just like anything, too much of anything will definately get you in the long run. I heard this, and that, about the converter eventually failing, and others saying it wont hurt it.

In the stock AUJP bin, the "TCC unlock prevention threshold" is set at 75 MPH. The only thing is, locking it up with 250 hp, as compared to 500 hp, might cause some premature wear.

I would think a quality converter should be fine. If a power adder is used, I think the anti balloning plates will help, but the question is, for how long?

Whats going on with your heads?

87_ta also burnt me some proms...one with stock tcc lockup at 90mph (AUJL chip i think??) and another stock chip with it set at 105mph lockup. also have a arap bin with 105mph lockup

for my car, its lockin right before the 1/4 since i only trap 97mph and it feels liek its slowing me down. i have yet to try the 105mph one at the track

but i did dyno the chips.... and didnt have th converter locked on the dyno so my numbers are low...but when the chip locked the converter you can see the power spike upword... and its VERY noticeable on the graph. i'll have the results up tommorrow sometime. but the 105mph lockup seemed to make more power to the ground than before the stock chip locked up the converter...once the stock chip locked up, the power spiked up even with the arap bin numbers..even tho the EBRAKE was on slightly. the ARAP bin looked like it might have made slighly more power as well, but the stock chip run the guy had my EBRAKE on partially...so its 10hp down, and my rotors are blue
