Looking good there Bill.
She going to be running soon?
No body man help for me today, so I did air compressor fun instead.

However, what should be 1/4" NPT for the steam tube vents doesn't seem to fit at all. However, the steam tube banjo bolts thread in like butter so I'm not sure what the heck is in the old heads. I may have to order in some plugs which is a pain. I don't want to screw the threads in the AFR heads.
For the passenger side block off, I ended up stealing the CTS sensor out of the old B-body heads and just knocking the plastic plug off. Fits perfect. No one will ever see it when the headers and crap are installed.
Heads are on and torqued, push-rod guide plates are aligned and snugged. I need to torque them down to 55ftlbs, then set valve lash. Then I can put the valve covers and intake on the car. Ran out of daylight so I just put the valve covers on over the stuff to keep crap out, and set the intake in the galley to block it off.
Had a moment when I had one more washer in the bag from the ARP head bolts, and there were exactly 34 to begin with. So I had to go over the heads and check which one I forgot to put a washer on. Thankfully I don't torque any of them down until all the bolts are set in their place. So it was easy.
I was dreading doing another head swap this morning, was supposed to do it last week, but doggy diarrhea takes precedence. Glad the job is 85% over.

Cool, looks like you got it handled.

Depends on the state of the tune, I need to make sure its not going lean up top.
I almost finished it up today, but the rain came and put a stop to it.
I need to put the radiator back in, hook the fans up, and burp it. So close again. Might take 2 half days this week and try and get the car to the exhaust shop. Hard though, got a wedding next weekend to go to.

I have good news, and bad news.
My floor pans are solid, not a single bit of soft metal anywhere.
The holes? They are actually in the rocker panel where the ECM bulk-head comes through. Considering there is already holes there for the wiring its not a super big deal. But I need to grind it and patch I guess.
So once i get the car mobile, who wants to do some welding on my car.

So, the car isn't going to make Road America. The exhaust isn't going to be made until Thursday. And I am driving up to Road America on Friday. So I guess I"ll be rocking the Focus for that.
However, I plan to drive the crap out of it locally the following week. So it should at least see its first Road Trip the next week to Cordova, IL. Though I don't think I'll race it there.

Bill, I'd be surprised if you broke the 10bolt without slicks. I've seen some pretty poor behavior with a 10bolt but it's all been on street tires and they survive. Now if you're running slicks and your clutch holds good, well all bets are off... Shouldn't your car have a 9 bolt anyway?

Exactly, the pinion bearing was going on my 9 bolt. Even if fixed, the cones become a wear item-better be an expert at shimming.
I bit the bullet and bought a MW 12 bolt. That's why I'll be a spectator on Saturday - no $$.

Today, I gave the car a 3 bucket wash, but it was REALLY dirty, so it needs another wash. But it looks much better now.
Its in need of a big polish, there is no reflection in the paint. But realistically its almost 6yr old Maaco single stage urethane paint and its never been waxed, polished, or buffed before. Just hand washed.
And on the back of the tow truck for the almost 70 mile tow to Bridgview Car Care, the only place I will take my cars for exhaust work.

Cpn Ahab idles and drives now.
Its shockingly quiet inside the car though. The exhaust really doesn't come through. However, after a few miles of driving the exhaust started to vibrate against something in the rear, in dryer weather I'll have to get under there and see where its rubbing and try to adjust it.
The insane noise? Its gone, surprisingly mellow. There is something however wrong with the tune, I need to work on it more.
It cruises fairly well in the 1500-2000rpm range, even in 6th gear on the highway. Not much acceleration to be had. But i downshifted into 3rd and it just didn't seem to come alive, it bucked pretty good under heavy load.
More tuning needed I guess.

Needs more work done.
I think the coolant gauge sender is going bad. I will be taking the car for ride with the laptop to confirm that the CTS and the sender are reading the same. If not, then I've got an air pocket in the heads and its not bleeding completely.
Yesterday I drove back in the raid without wipers because I forgot to hook up the wiper motor (DOH!)
I also didn't have a blower motor because I didn't wire up the power feed for it. Another DOH! moment.
This trip home certainly hasn't been as trouble free as the first time I got the LT1 running.
There are also several spots that the paint needs to be addressed. The Maaco job is showing its age, and needs to be repaired. Thankfully in non-visible places. Area's like the hatch seems are thin and peeling. So I'll have to sand down the loose stuff and get some paint on it to keep it sealed for a bit longer.
I never expected the Maaco job to last forever though.

So, I hit 100 miles on the way home today and decided to fill up the gas tank to see what kind of fuel economy I was getting. LMAO, not good economy thats for sure.
On the way home friday the trip was about 45 miles or so. Much of it spent in bumper to bumper traffic. So thats not nice to economy, but still.
The rest of the 100 miles was a mix of highway around 40-70mph. And it took 8.6 gallons to fill it back up to full again. 11.6mpg.
I'm looking over the data logs now, I see rich rich rich though. I need a wide-band to make this easier. Read about a PCM hack that would allow me to plug the wideband output into the AC Pressure input on the PCM and run a custom bit to convert it into usable WB02 readings for tuning purposes. Since I don't have AC, I think I'll be doing that.

Gave the car full beans in 3rd gear today.
1st is of course useless, as is most of 2nd once the tires are warm.
3rd doesn't pull great below 3500rpm, but the fun didn't stop till it bounced off the rev limiter and I realized, oh, that was 6500rpm and it wanted more.
I know the car isn't making anywhere near its potential, it sorely needs a tune, but it was fun to actually get to ring it up a bit.
