Replacement Vehicle
I thought I'd fill everyone in on what happened with my '92 and the insurance.
They treated me very well.
A guy came out and looked at the car and did his evaluation. He then took the report back to the company.
A few days later the adjuster called me. She said the replacement cost for my car was $4,085 with tax. I said OK.
She also said that the investigator mentioned I wanted to buy the car back if it was considered a total loss. I said “Yes, that’s correct.”
She then said the estimate to repair the car was $3,492.64 and if I wanted, she could just cut me a check for that amount and I wouldn’t have to turn in the title to be salvaged.
I was thinking “HELL YEA!!!”, but I played it cool and said “So it would be like me paying about $600 to buy the car back, but this way the car won’t have a salvaged or rebuilt title, correct?”
She said “That’s correct.”
THEN I said “SURE!!!”
The cool part is I bought the car in April 2000 for $3200
I’m not sure what I’m going to do with it yet. I have a new member of the family now. :sillylol:
It’s a 1972 Camaro. 350, Vortec heads, Edelbrock Performer (DP), Holley 650 Dbl Pmpr, Comp Cams Magnum 268 hyd. cam (I think it’s a 268), 1-5/8" headers w/ duals, TH350 trans, ~2000 RPM stall, and a 3.42 rear gear w/ Auburn limited slip.
The car will **** and get. I had to do a few things to it to get it running well. There was no air cleaner because there was a 1" spacer under the carb and NO hood clearance. Not eve for a 1" air cleaner. I ripped the spacer out and bought a $12 air cleaner from AutoZone for now. There were no breathers on the valve covers, the vacuum advance wasn’t hooked up, and the base timing was set to 20* BTDC.
I had a set of chrome centerbolt valve covers w/ breathers, so I threw those on. While I had them off, I went through and adjusted all the rockers. The guy put Rhoads fast-bleed lifters in there. They are noisy as hell!! I pulled the spark plugs out so I could rotate the engine easier and guess what. He also had platinum tip plugs in there. Worse yet, they were gapped @ .055"!! I brought them down to .045". Next I adjusted the timing, idle mixture, and of course the rockers.
The day I got the car, the highest RPM it could pull strong to was 5000. NOW it pulls REALLY STRONG to 6000 RPM.
The next plan of attack is the wheels and rear springs. As you see in the pic, they’re sagging a lot. And the IROC wheels don’t look good on that car. The interior can use some help. The seats are fine, but the front dash is covered in carpet, and the rear is cracked and pealing bad.
Overall I’m pretty happy. I got it for $3,900 and the body is in great shape. There’s no rust underneath, and it drives great. It just needs a little TLC.
I think for now I’m going to keep the ‘92 and continue to use it as my daily driver. I may fix it, I may not. I haven’t decided yet.
