Hi, I found a used under 65k 96 5.7L engine on the net. Its from auction auto wreckers. They are guaranteed for 18 months and come with full motor and intake with fuel injection. Its just 1000 bucks. I am thinking about ordering that! I am just wondering if it would fit in my firebird??? I don't see why not. Its a truck engine.
Thats the way I wanna go with my car. New 5.7L engine. I just don't wanna use the flat tappet.

Definitely look into it more. Its called the Vortec 5700, L31 engine. Its a Gen I small block chevy, not sure if its TBI or TPI or something else. Ask around on the Engine swap boards for more info.

CPI - has an octopus on the intake. Causes trouble eventually, I've heard.
Vortec heads. You could get a Vortec TBI manifold for it.
Regardless, no way, no how it would it pass Colorado Air Care.

I may be wrong five7, but I just did some research and from what I found out 96+ is CSFI(Central Sequential Fuel Injection). That being said you are right, none of that stuff is going to pass CO emmissions. However, if you got a different set of heads (081s maybe?), you could use most of your original TBI stuff and just upgrade to whatever parts you need to make the 350 run correctly, and still be able to pass smog. The other nice thing about that is the Vortech heads could be sold for a nice chunk of change to recoup the price of the motor.

I've been thinking that something about this conversation just didn't make sense - I know that California's emissions laws are the strictest in the country, & that a lot of states basically "follow their lead" when it comes to enacting their regulations. And I'm pretty confident that I've read that Cali will allow you to do engine swaps as long as the engine is newer than the original, and all of that engine's original emissions gear is retained.
Now, since Sasha's car is an '89, and this engine is a '96, I would think that it should breeze through Colo's emissions, once they've verified that all of the '96 emissions stuff was functional (which probably means from the ECM on down) and he got the appropriate waiver.
I've spent a bit of time talking with the people @ my local emissions testing station, & to be honest, I'm really not especially concerned about my GTA passing emissions, even though I'm going to be running an HSR on it. They were pretty laid back, & seemed as though their only real concern was that the vehicle passed the sniffer test without throwing any codes. I've even talked to them about swapping in a larger engine (well, they actually brought it up initially), & their attitude was "Cool, just let us know so that we can get you the right paperwork/waiver/whatever".
Of course, if he did that, he'd be subject to whatever performance the '96 engine can give him, but I'd definitely think that it wouldn't be a step down... And since it's OBD2, it would probably allow a greater latitude as far as tuning is concerned.
Would I do it if I were in that position (& knowing what I do now)?? Probably not. What I'd probably do is take the $$$ that I'd saved for the Camaro, & see what kinds of heads would work with my current combo (because pretty much everything revolves around having decent airflow). It may not be the best "bang for the buck" speed part, but it's the most-important/central one. (That's just my )

thas correct a swap from a same year or newer is ok as long as it retains ITS emmissions stuff, to be honest with you teh emmissions is a joke out here, i doubt they'd have any clue if you didnt say anything

You don't quite understand it correctly. Not only the year, but the type of vehicle. Plus, it's not "California", but Federal EPA regulations that dictate these things. It is only enforcement that is local (and that via the blackmail of Federal highway funds if EPA isn't happy with you).
The L31 is a light truck engine. 3rd gens are passenger cars. They have different standards. GM didn't put Vortec-type heads nor CSFI on any passenger cars, so no emissions equipment package applies to passenger cars, even older ones.
LT1? LT4? LS1? LS6? LS2? No problem, those went in passenger cars, all later than 3rd gens, so as long as you transfer all of the equipment over, you'll be fine.
The truck varients -

Here is the thing. If I can fit my knock sensor in the block I'd be good to go. I'd just swap all my TBI stuff to this car and tune it. No way will they be able to tell that its a 96 truck motor. To them it will look like the good ol' 305 TBI. Now, I can probably get it tuned to where it makes decent power and passes emissions.
I don't plan on doing this for a while. Maybe, I am praying, they will dismiss any emission testing in colorado by than!

As someone with an emissions lisence,in ft collins the emissions equipment have to valid with what ever is newer, motor or car? 96 truck engine 96 truck emissions equipment. it is laid back compared to california, and you are right most dumb *** jiffy lube guys dont have a clue about what engine is acually in the vehicle. i also know that the emissions program is being shut down in ft collins and the rest of the county as of dec. 2006. but we have the basic program here not the enhanced like in longmont or denver. anyway if you have any questions about the emissions progam let me know. There are ways around every thing!

Yeah all that was told to us was just make sure that it was available for one of the models for that particular year and that everything was kept with it. So we got our L98 and kept all the TPI stuff with it. BUT we just got it tested and the damn sheet says that the AIR system was N/A. You mean to tell me that we don't actually need EVERYTHING that came with the engine ? Oh well, and the sheet still says that it is a 5.0L . If they only knew.
