You will traviz. unless you blow up the rear end on the way to the track...my dad used to do that all the time back when he raced

What RPMs are you guys launching at? Off idle??
Y'all are very consistent, so I'm guessing not pushing it very hard off the line maybe?
DR's should be capable of better 60's. I prob have the same M/T's and my best is a 1.79 60'

if you're having trouble with that tire you're lookin in the wrong area. If you're having consistency issues with that tire you need to start looking into doing something about your suspension...or just go to a slick, they're way more forgiving.

Re: Nor-Cal 2011 1/4 Mile Track Times - Get on the list!!!

Are you talking to me Jesse, or just quoting?
They are definitely not having consistency issues and are winning their classes quite frequently it seems.
I was just curious why they're pulling 2.0 60's with DR's. I assumed not leaving very hard, or as you said, possibly stockish suspension.
My suspension is far from stock and I consistently net 1.8s with mine and I see others can do even better.

P.S. - Where are your times for this year?? heheh

I had BFG's before. You will get more street life out of them. MTs have barely any tread. For your daily driver, they wouldn't last long.

If you want A good tire for the track Mickey Thompson is the only way to go run the radials for auto or ET street bias ply for manual. You don't need a slick yet, the good thing is you can drive home without worry!

If you don't think you'll get pulled over on an et street I got a bridge to sell ya. Ask me how I know! If you have a spare set of wheels just get the slick. They're flying on radials as well, if you're worried about breaking something you can still break it on that tire.

I know things can break at anytime just more worried with a slick than drag radial

Look, everyone and their moms cutting 1.3x 60s on a MT 275. Decent amount of people cutting 1.2x 60s and a handful cutting 1.1x 60s. Hell i even think that tires gone faster than a 28x10.5 non W. Point is that tire works, however a radial doesn't recover like a slick does and is way more finicky. A slick makes up for a LOT of not so dialed in suspension and is way more user friendly when you don't have the time/experience/money into the suspension.

If you're worried about breaking stuff, don't race. You WILL break stuff, just a matter of when.

You wanna play it safe, leave the street tires on it and have at it. Want the car to hook throw a slick on it. Why do this middle of the road stuff, when all that's going to get you is a tire that spins because you're not dialed in enough to make use of it, or a tire that hooks because your car doesn't make enough power to spin it but will bust up your rear/trans just as easily as any slick. Make up your mind, a radial is NOT playing it safe, just gonna cause you more of a head ache.

...but what do I know

Re: Nor-Cal 2011 1/4 Mile Track Times - Get on the list!!!

Some good points in the ^ statement, however I think it should depend on what the car is bringing to the table setup wise and what you're looking to do with it.

I don't think I've seen a lightly modified, TBI, auto 3rd gen on here cutting any 1.3X 60's or better. I usually see "fast" and "street legal" cars pulling 1.6's on a DR at best, but then again, you guys prob see more than I do.

Slicks absorb the shock and could be less likely to break certain things. If you get on a poorly prepared track the slicks will usually still bite while the drag radials will spin and cause tire shake that can break rear end gears and axles too.

If you don't want to run a true slick, you have DOT cheater slicks like the Hoosier QTP and the Mickey Thompson Et Street. I think that's what Marc and Bennie use. Both are a bias ply tire, just like a slick, but have a couple small grooves and are somehow DOT approved. They may have a minor compound difference, but are very close to a true slick.

Then you have the DOT Drag Radial tires like the BFG, Nitto and M/T. These are totally different than a bias ply slick. The radials are a tire with softer compounds and sidewall construction to allow some wrinkle, but stiffer than a bias ply.

Most any of these will provide excellent traction assuming the cars driveline and chassis are setup properly and can take advantage of the additional traction.

I take that last statement above as; if you are pushing the car hard and possibly do not have the proper suspension, stuff can still break regardless what tire you're using!

That's kinda why I was asking what's up with STEWARDORNG's 60's since he's using a DR. I don't think they launch hard and that may be why so consistent in their stockish auto IROC.

Would you say that rant is somewhat accurate Jesse? I know you know this stuff.

Uh...what i was getting at is why does he want to put drag radials on his car instead of street tires? I'd say a good guess is he'd like the car to have better traction, if not then why even buy them at all? I'm getting at there isn't going to be a a real middle ground, unless he just so happens to black track the radial every time he makes a pass.

His trying to save the car from breaking anything by getting the radial is greatly outweighed by getting the car to do what he wants to do by putting on a slick imo.

Radial :He'll either spin the tire, which he could do on a street tire, and be pissed, or he'll hook (and possibly break something), which he could do on a slick.

Slick : He'll hook, and possibly break something.

So the question is, why are you changing tires if you don't want the car to hook? You're going to a TNT or Grudge Night or Wed Night Drag...you're not class racing. Don't make it harder on yourself for no reason.

Re: Nor-Cal 2011 1/4 Mile Track Times - Get on the list!!!

I think the bottom line for the casual racer who has gone to the track on their crappy street tires and is getting 2.2/2.3 60's sees a DR as an easy fix to get at least a 2.0, especially if they're lacking power/suspension. I don't think UnderCover89TBI is hoping for 1.5 60's, or at least I hope not, haha.

If the power and strong rear/suspension is there, you can obviously see MUCH better results, regardless if a slick, or DR and a reduced chance of breaking something.

Do we have a #2 yet for this list?!? Maybe if the rain stops this month I guess. ..

Re: Nor-Cal 2011 1/4 Mile Track Times - Get on the list!!!

I cut 2.1 60's last time out and I was spinning. Im going to drive to the track. So im getting drag radials. If something breaks. Then I fix it. But from what Ive seen a lot of people still spin lightly with radials then hook. I mean I can take slicks with me in my car and change at the track, but then im dealing with chaining up tires to the fence. I bought new tires 3 months ago, when I did I put tiles for mileage, mpg. I did not care about hooking up because my plan was getting two higher performance tires for the track. I drive the **** out of my car. Ill be in fresno one weekend, sacramento the next, the bay the next etc! but im trying to find the best middle ground. get me to the track safely, hook up decent. So I was like perfect drag radials! So that is what I am doing. Thanks for the constructive criticism though!

john I just want some 235/60/15 drag radials let me know!

Oh yeah. I have the tubular control arms, kyb gas a just shocks, LCR relocation brackets. So I dont have wheel hop, I was just burning out a tad too much last time. Well that I could tell anyway. So I just wanna be able to hook up a little better. And like I said. If I break something. I break something! Just hopefully not.

You'll have to beat that 14.1 up there! haha.

Where's your buddy Tim? Is that battle going to go down at the track soon?

I do have a spare set of wheels. that I am going to mount the drag radials too. and then put them on before I go to the track. so I can drive there and home. instead of having slicks in the back and changing them when I get there

Re: Nor-Cal 2011 1/4 Mile Track Times - Get on the list!!!

I agree w/ Jess. Slicks would be better, its not like you guys are leaving at 4-5000 rpms.

Foot braking and leaving the line at 1500-2500 rpms isn't gonna break anything that wasn't already going to break before.

If you're taking the time to go race, might as well do it right. Run slicks & change em there.

I was to the point of almost selling it just as a roller. Meh, who knows, EFI and a turbo could be in it's future.
