The Formula died today
Eric and I swaped in the UR6 plugs then took it for a test ride. I did half a pass at DonJulio raceway. 1st gear ran great up to 5000rpm hit 2nd and ran it up to 5000 hit 3rd and then let off. I heard a little back fire on decel, gave it a little gas and it was missing. I got about 4 house away from mine and the RPM's drop real low and it just died. It will crank but then it would just stop. sounds like I dumped a rod. I was just talking about selling it too, been thinking about getting out of thirdgens.
Hope it doesn't rain any time soon, because I'll be on 2 wheels for a while

DonJulio raceway
Well if it is in fact dead, it will be a bummer to lose a long-time 3rd gen owner/member.
You sure haven't had much luck getting one on the road for very long.
P.S. - Were you really running 10psi? I'm hoping to get closer to that, if not a bit more.
I'll have to get back to you on the extra pulley/belt you have before you sell the whole thing!

Re: The Formula died today
I had a 12psi pulley on, but I guess procharger rates them at 6000rpm. I would get 10psi a little over 4000rpm at full throttle.
TraviZ Im not gonna part the car out, Im 85% sure Im gonna stick another motor in it. I still wonna make atleast 1 good pass down the track . I am thinking about selling most of the swap stuff I have for the Iroc.

Don't you know that cars have feelings? She was ticked off at you and decided you must be punished. This is the the equivalent of talking smack about your girlfriend, so she takes your ATM card, empties your bank account and goes on a shopping spree.

Re: The Formula died today
Damn, that sucks. I'm glad to hear that it ran hard, so at least the supercharger is still in good shape. I agree that you needed some tuning on that thing. Did you retard the timing or anything else? The stock injectors like to lock up at higher pressures too. SVO's would have been a good upgrade.
I'd say replace/rebuild the short block, get some bigger injectors, retard the timing... and you'll be good to go for a while. I don't know what the specs are on the L98 in 3rdBird's car but I have my stock L98 that ran strong that I'd let go pretty cheap. Since you don't have to drive it I'd say pull the engine out and tear it down... I'd especially like to see what the pistons look like.
----------
$1000 for an L98? I'll give you the same deal and I'll even pay shipping if you're really that excited about it...

I guess I should look at the details first. I sort of assumed it was at least a somewhat modded 350 with low mileage, same with the tranny.

all I did was change the plugs. never heard any knocking or pinging. even before the plug change, just felt kind of soft, and the whole WOT 4500rpm problem

Re: The Formula died today
now the rub in part, just because you didn't hear it doesn't mean it was there. The spark plug is your only view into the combustion chamber and they don't lie. That motor was detonating, a shame nobody told you sooner.

Re: The Formula died today
It detonated and that's why the engine broke. 10-12 psi on a stock 305/350 is a little much more than I would run it for. Even the stock Mustang 5.0 can't really take 10-12 lbs of boost and they came with forged pistons stock. And to rub it in, the 302s are pretty stout.....stock.

And like most 3rdgens on the road, they are not maintained and do not perform anywhere close to stock.

My formula was well maintained, never leaked a drop until I started boosting it. I shoot down a couple 5.Slows with the mighty LB9
if everything goes as planned it should be back in the road in about 2 months

Glad to hear you didn't lose the 3rd gen love completely yet.
You should've tuned it immediately after adding the blower IMO.

I don't think you can tune the 730 ecm for boost because it can't see boost. I would have to repin the ecm and run the $58 or $59 code. which doesn't sound hard, but they dont have a way to control egr and Im not sure it would pass smog with out egr.

Re: The Formula died today
Not necessarily just for boost, but you could still optimize the fuel/spark and reduce the knock.
I don't know a lot about the 730, but there are some great articles on the DIY board if you have a couple hours to read.
I know you're trying to datalog and that's a start.
CHAPTER 5: TUNING ARTICLES BROKEN DOWN BY ECM
730:
* P730: Part Throttle Fuel Tuning (no PE)
* P730: BPW and Target AFR, how it is used and calculated at WOT in PE Mode (P730: Target AFR and how it is used in PE Mode)
* Removing Smog pump, AIR: $8D 730 modifications (Removing Smog pump, AIR: $8D 730 modifications)
* How does the Stoichiometric constant affect part throttle BLMs in $8D?
* $8D Acceleration Enrichment Tuning (little some thing i put together on $8d ae tunning)
* P730 - Octane Retard Routine and how to control it better
* MAT recalibration tables
* MAT recalibration tables 2 (MAT question)
* CCP and how it affects Highway Mode (CCP and Highway mode)
* BLM Cell stuck on 4 (Swapped to 730, BLM Cell stuck on 4)
* Project Super AUJP
* MAT PW Compensation and $8D
* Idle RPM Limiter 730/AUJP
* o2 Constants
* Cold Start
* $8D Throttle Follower, IAC (Throttle Follower $8D)
* Launch Mode! (Launch Mode!)
* Baro/Da Calculations
* WOT % Change to Air/Fuel Ratio vs. RPM (WOT%Change to fuel/air ratio vs rpm question?)
* Tuning the Timing
* How to fix some of those common idle issues (big cam, surging, stalls, etc.)

Re: The Formula died today
The AIR and EGR will not function, true. But there would be no check engine light, and if you leave the valve in place when they push on the diaphragm to check its operation, the engine will stumble like it is supposed to since it will still subject the intake to exhaust gases.
