Can I register as a Collector Car - NJ

A buddy emailed me something he "got off the internet" regarding NJ DMV
I average between 1-2k miles a year on my GTA...is it true I could register it as a collector and not have to go through this damn NJ inspection anymore??

Just wondering if this is true or just

***************************************

Collector vehicles
To be classified as a "collector vehicle" you need to apply when you
register and make sure that the vehicle:

* Is not registered as a "historic vehicle" or a "street rod"
* Is not driven more than 3,000 miles per year (proof available at
odometer reading)
* Is insured as a limited use "collector vehicle"

To qualify for an exemption:

* Visit an MVC Agency to purchase a voucher for a special decal to
mark the vehicle exempt from safety and emission inspection; fee is $25
for an initial voucher and $10 to renew
* Take the collector vehicle to a State Inspection Station where
the inspector will verify the odometer reading

Here is how it works

1st you MUST have collector car insurance...without this...well stop here

Assuming you have collector Car ins...then...

When you register you car, do it in person. Show them the CC Ins info and tell them you would like to resister it as a collector car. You then pay your regular registration and also like extra $22 for a 2nd registration...that 2nd one is the CC Reg.

Now you go to DMV and pull up to the back. Show them the registration your license and insurance like normal. They will get in your car and write down the miles. You will then need to take the car for a ride, like a minimum of 1 mile so when you get back they can see that you odometer works. Then they give you your sticker...It is really that simple.

Its a triangle sticker and like all used car inspections it is for 2 years. Only restriction is...3,000 mile per year.

G/L I did it on my '96 Mustang Cobra, and on My '91 ZR1

Re: Can I register as a Collector Car - NJ

the way the law is written about the insurance aspect is somewhat unclear. some DMV locations will allow the use of any 'limited use' type policy, some places will demand classic/antique/collectors type insurance, and then there are those who have gotten through with just listing the car in question as a secondary vehicle.
collectors is supposed to limit you to 300miles a year, but i hav never heard of anyone checking. so i am thinking it is like QQ plates that they eventually just lifted the mileage restriction because thre was no way to really enforce it anyway.

I would imagine it does vary depending on the agent, many of them have their own opinion of how to conduct themselves...They think they are cops.

I go to the Westfield location, they only take appointments, its awesome...no lines...anyway they told me 3k miles...I thing the 300 is on a different type.

Re: Can I register as a Collector Car - NJ

Special interest vehicle that are 15 years old, drive it less than 3500 miles per year. Keep it in a locked garage. You are older than 25.

You'll need collectors ins. Condon & Skelly/ Grundy.

Pay your reg. get a white card for the collector, fill it out properly and go to end of line.

It's not the ins. co. enforcing the mileage, the DMV however will! when you are over the 3500 when you reinspect two years later.

Tehn they may flag it and you wont be able to apply that vin as a collector again. Neither of this is anything to worry about. You can use you original policy, I've been to many facilities and none have asked to see the exact policy. All they care for is the mileage(fairly strict).

Now that being said, IMHO it doesn't matter what policy you give them, but be prepared to not be covered if you do something stupid. For example if you have collector insurance it says "for use attending car meets, functions, and the occaisonial cruise"

If you get into an accident cause you felt like taking it to work, they(collectors) prolly will not cover you unless you can prove the circumstances above.

I happen to think if you are just trying to avoid the inspection the best way is to use your normal plicy and pass it on as a collectors(9 outta 10 they wont check it), that way in the event you are cruising along and get smashed by the soccer mom on your way to work you'll be covered. Unless you can prove to the insurance co. you were on your way to the trans am club meet at 9:30 am on a Tuesday morning!

However the cost is great. The policy for a collector should run less than $300/yr.

The cost for comp and liability could be $800+ even with a good history, age and territory......

Insurance in NJ is F'd up. I'd rather take my chances scamming the Police than the insurance co.'s! At least the Police are not as powerful.........

Re: Can I register as a Collector Car - NJ

I had an agreed value collector car insurance on a '68 396 SS/RS Camaro once. The stipulations were rather stringent. It had to be kept in a locked garage, could not be left parked unattended, could not drive over 2k miles per year, no Saturday nighting, no street or comptetition racing, no coverage in the event of a nuclear or act of nature blah, blah, blah. In NC I still had to have an annual safety inspection. 20k agreed value was like $250 yrly.

Re: Can I register as a Collector Car - NJ

i have my car registered as a collector car in NJ, i do not as of now have collector car insurance, just a regular policy, and have never had a problem for the last 5 years, but im going to have to get some kind of agreed value insurance cause i have WAY too much money in my car to afford to wreck it. i can put on 3k a year with a 2 year inspection, and all they do at the inspection is check to make sure you odometer works, i just drive up to the office at the station, they make me go around the block and verify my odometer works and im done.
