Speed shops/garages in MD?

I think I posted this in the wrong forum (Northeast) last week or so, so here goes again. I'm looking for a 3rd gen friendly shop somewhere around Bowie/Crofton.

Particularly I need a welder to put on SFCs that I just got. I called Maryland Mufflers (Rt 3/175) and the guy didn't sound all that enthusiastic about the job. Any decent shops with competent folks in my area?

Re: Speed shops/garages in MD?

I got my SFC's welded on up at fbodycentral. I had called autofab and the dude put me in the work log and I never got a call back. Fbodycentral had me in the next morning.

Re: Speed shops/garages in MD?

Other than FBC, you might want to try flowers performance or PSI in Glen Burnie. I think Flowers mainly does ford stuff, but I don't see why he wouldn't do SFC's on a camaro...? Also, you might want to try Anderson's Performance in Dundalk/Essex/whatever you want to call it over there. Although they specialize in turbo buicks, they work on all sorts of GM stuff. My buddy took his buick there to have a th400 swap done; they did good work. I also seen a guy that had them do a LT1 swap in a 3rd gen and it looked/performed well. Now that I think of it, I might see if Anderson's would do it before the others, then maybe try PSI.

Re: Speed shops/garages in MD?

Call Tyson @ PAF. He does great work, installed my sfc's along with welded up a borla kit and made a really nice y pipe for my T/A.

I need to have him install my thirdgen's sfc's, but I have to get the lt1/t56 swapped in first so I can move the car under it's own power.

Re: Speed shops/garages in MD?

ELD has a decent reputation -- at least they did before the change in management. I haven't been there lately. They did the fourth gen race that got a lot of attention on pinks against the rice (Honda I think). The Maryland Camaro Club used to refer a lot of business there too. That's how I found out about them.

Re: Speed shops/garages in MD?

I found a place in waldorf ,about 25-30minutes south of Bowie.

McKeown Motorsports
10-f irongate dr
Waldorf,MD 20602

www.mmeracing.com

Friend of mine went to a $50 dyno day there and got three pulls and the #'s were right where the engine builder said they would be.FWIW

Re: Speed shops/garages in MD?

unfortunately don't have a real suggestion (and this is coming from someone that used to work at a local speed shop, and has dealt with a bunch of them and related businesses), I'm always amazed how hard it is to find a decent shop around here.

As far as ELD goes, that was run by Brian Bossone and his dad, his dad has been trying to retire for years and Brian got distracted with Pinks and it's spinoffs (you'll see him on there sometimes, bigger guy with dark hair and a goatee) and if the shop is still around it's being run by someone else (I know when he was looking to get out of it, I considered buying, my brother had Brian do some work for him and they still talk once in a while).

I used to work at Rockville Speed and Custom, but that died a year or 2 after I left. I think that f-body central is dead also (maybe wrong) but I've been contacted by people that worked there on this board when I was looking for someone to do some work, and they were working out of their home shops.

For a while it seemed like import shops and places that did more cosmetic work vs real performance work seemed to be doing better. I know that one shop ower claimed that he made all his money selling stickers and crap to ricers and parts to other shops.

The problem is that none of these shops seem to think it's important to be able to be found, the don't have any or a good web presence, don't come up in any searches... Recently I was looking for a machine shop and found that I couldn't find phone numbers for most of the ones that I knew existed. I finally found a couple of them by calling businesses around them and asking till I found one that knew their phone number.

Burtonsville Performance Machine is one of the exceptions, but they can't seem to act like a modern business either. You can find a number because they've been the same for years, but they don't seem to want to talk to you and they only take cash or check for a payment.

The only place that I could recommend is a place off of East Guide in Rockville called light truck service. They have one guy there that does a good job and has skills, but they aren't a performance shop and will generally try to avoid that kind of work (though he has done some blower installs...). For things like gear installs, fuel system...(think the kind of stuff that overlaps between truck service and performance work) he's not a bad choice.

Looks like Anderson's might be out of business, or their website is down.

The phone number I had for them was 410-282-9335.
