Yeah emissions time! :( Failed yet again on my first try.

This time they did the treadmill test
Different people each time and they put me on the treadmill this time!

Well it might work out again since I failed last time on the treadmill then I came back to try again and they did the idle test. So many it might happen again.

anyway I failed all 3 tests of course.

HC CO NOx
State 1.0000 GPM 20.0000 GPM 2.2000 GPM
Readings 1.7452 GPM 24.2047 GPM 3.3139 GPM

Not horrible failings, however, still failed.

I thought maybe with the cool rainy weather, letting the engine get hot which is did it was running off the 2nd fan switch only borderline 240 that I would have a chance.

I guess my new 24's injectors might be giving too much fuel so I am going to make a chip leaning it out and taking out timing, and changing fan 1 temps to come on 230, I thought I was going to overheat almost but the fan switch on 2 did work it seemed.

3 times in a row failing the first time and now I need to come back and pass yet again.

Might just redo my whole exhaust with high flow cats.

Re: Yeah emissions time! :( Failed yet again on my first try.

I was recently told by one of the emissions monkeys that if the car is too low they can't tredmill it. He suggested clamping the springs. I would take out some timing back to atleast base of 6 degrees. Maybe try a bottle of rubbing alcohol with a full tank.

That is my 2 cents

Re: Yeah emissions time! :( Failed yet again on my first try.

yeah I am trying to pass as cheap as possible. i am going to put the timing to 0 like last time and I need to make a new chip to set the injectors to 24 instead of 22 and adjust the fan to come on a 235.

I dont feel like touching the suspension, I already have the prokit on it, I remember when I first took the car at the same place I got a waiver for being too low when the car was completely stock so go figure!!

too many diff. people work there and nothing is consistent. hopefully this time I can get it idle only again.

Re: Yeah emissions time! :( Failed yet again on my first try.

i pass no problems with mine and i have no cats

put a new O2 sensor in it, dial back the timing (i was at 12 degrees and had no problem) and run it 225 degrees+ along with a 1/4 tank of fuel with 2 bottles of 90% alcohol

works for me

i'm looking to buy a summer house on the shore out by OC with no emissions to worry about soon

Re: Yeah emissions time! :( Failed yet again on my first try.

how are things going Mic? its been awhile.

I remember I made a thread last emissions time and you were having problems passing, or at least asked what I did to pass.

They are putting me on the treadmill every time now, lol the past times I have failed and came back they usually did the idle test. Now that they seem to want to do the treadmill I actually need to detune it which I have been slowly doing.

Yeah I know about getting hot, I have the fan set to come on high now, I guess I can try some stuff in the gas tank and see how that works.

02 sensor is new just put it in about 4 months ago, new plugs.
I never have been challenged to pass on the treadmill so now I am having to tune away to get things done, but I will try some stuff in the fuel, I use 93 all the time I think thats best especially when u add in extra stuff. Also this cooler weather doesnt help to much either. I have till Feb. anyway.

Re: Yeah emissions time! :( Failed yet again on my first try.

i been good man how bout you?

i just been busy with other things in life. getting rid of a crazy ex gf and having fun with my new one.

yeah i failed once and i didn't do anything to the car then just went in on a 1/4 tank of fuel, 2 bottles of 90% alky and got her upto 235 degrees but they did the idle test.

they might do the idle test next time anyways for you. seems they don't know **** and do whatever the guy at the time says to do. keep playing it's too low blah blah blah and tell them they did the idle test before.

good luck man!

Re: Yeah emissions time! :( Failed yet again on my first try.

Pretty good, been messing with my 4th gen alittle and riding/working on my bikes.

from what u can tell the 90% rubbing alky doesnt have any drawbacks like make it leaner, since I will be running it lean already.

yeah I will play the idle test game with them and see if I can get them to do that.

but either way I am almost passing the treadmill it seems.

I changed my chip from 26 to 27 injector rate, took out more timing but telling the computer I have it set at 16 on the engine, but i really have it set to 0, capped off max timing to 30.

I think between those changes and making sure my fan does come on at 230 and off at 225 I might pass, I plan to ride it there with the good chip and then swap in the "emissions chip" a few miles down the road and test it there.

Once I get this passed I wanted to continue to try and get down into the 12s, I am getting closer each time I race. down in the 13.4s now

the alky leans it out some. probably not much to really hurt it as long as your not hammering it out of there you will be fine just go fill it up.

yeah i'm itching to get an R1 soon. when i do we should go riding. looking to pick up an 07 and hoping i can get a deal for less than 10k otd especially since 08's are coming out now.

Re: Yeah emissions time! :( Failed yet again on my first try.

3rd fail time.

weather was shitty today, not raining anymore but humid and around 55 out.

this is what i tried today.

new chip with engine timing at 0, chip base at 0
lowered max timing from 42 to 30, and lowered all timing -5 on the charts

injectors set at 24 which they are, and for hte fuel charts -5 throughout.

1/4 of the usual 93 gas, 2 to 3 bottles of the 91% rubbing alcohol and a small thing of octane booster (i am getting desperate).

fan comes on at 231 off and 225, stays on if it needs till up to 137 mph so if it overheats while running at 60+ mph on the treadmill it will stay on.

HC CO NOx
State 1.0000 GPM 20.0000 GPM 2.2000 GPM
Readings 2.1073 GPM 15.6176 GPM 3.8295 GPM

I guess I need to start over again, and my my 3 test so far, I dont think it likes to run hot??? At least the NO is always high when it runs hot, maybe I need to cap the temp to 220 and no higher.

any comments or suggestions? I have till FEB but want to get it done while the temps are still decent out.

Re: Yeah emissions time! :( Failed yet again on my first try.

What’s been done to the engine? Is there something wrong with the car? The fact is that MD standards are so loose that it’s actually pretty hard to fail with a properly running car. Not to be a PITA, but my ’92 K1500 quick passed with 160K miles and a blown head gasket puking coolant on the rollers, it was actually somewhat embarrassing (and no emissions devices besides the cat, I was even running an earlier 747 ecm with some modified code out of a mexican suburban to bypass the 02 sensor because it was getting fouled by the coolant and confusing the computer).

How about some other details about why you might be failing?

He has no cats, thats a big part of it. Not sure if you read past that.

That is a pretty funny story about your truck though! haha.

Re: Yeah emissions time! :( Failed yet again on my first try.

Yeah, its kinda hard without all the things I dont have, I would assume; at least I dont see people pass to easy.

no cats
no mufflers
no egr
no evap ccp
no a.i.r

engine timing set at 0

in chip base timing is set at 8
injectors set at 26, I have 24 in there.
timing lower throughout the charts
fuel lowered -1 throughout.

just a stockish 350 tpi with exhaust.

I am going to try again with the stuff I had set to when I almost passed (test 2) then put some Denatured alcohol in the tank.

I read chemistry project on the net from some kid that did test with his fathers car in CA with that stuff and it lowered all 3 readings.

Re: Yeah emissions time! :( Failed yet again on my first try.

Yea, I missed that point. It didn’t even register as a possibility. They’re supposed to set a little mirror next to the car to visually check for cats while putting your car info into the computer and checking the gas cap.

You do realize that if you get caught without cats they can legally impound your car and hit you with a massive fine, don’t you? The other side of that is that you can get just about anything properly tuned/running to pass with cats on it.

Re: Yeah emissions time! :( Failed yet again on my first try.

well I havent had a problem since 03, I have passed 2 times since my exhaust has been on, but both times were the idle only test for some reason.

also when the car was bone stock and stock ride height I got a waiver for being to low, which I was very surprised and everysince I lowered it more they decide they want to do the test, weird.

this is the first time I have been stuck on the treadmill every time

also I do know about the cats, and I plan to make cat shields from old cats I find around. I am going to grind off the shell of one and just tack weld them onto where they should be.

its not that I dont want them I just dont want to spend the money then have to worry about them going bad since I have no a.i.r system on the car anymore.

Re: Yeah emissions time! :( Failed yet again on my first try.

Ok, by hefty federal fine I believe that it was originally $2500, then raised to $10K and now $15K for anyone found responsible for removing converters off of a car. Last September MD also passed their own equally draconian exhaust tampering law. My point is that with all this you’re taking your car to someone that is supposed to check for this without cats on the car, you’re just asking for trouble and for no good reason.

FWIW, you won’t hurt a converter running it without air injection, they used to (some still do) come with a plug to put in the air tube if you weren’t hooking it up.
