No Front License Plate in Virginia

I don't know how many of you this will interest, but for the second year in a row there is a bill in the Virginia senate that, if passed, will no longer require the front plate. If you are interested in this going through, please write your representatives. Last year this was defeated purely by the Virginia State Police because the bill was not advertised.

Here is the bill (SB 1009) information:

http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp...031+sum+SB1009

Thanks for your time.

Thanks Biker. The more people who will write their representatives the more likely it will pass in favor of us. Last year Senator Chichester supported this bill and told me that it was stopped purely by the State Police because there was not much public attention due to it not being known, even by the car enthusiasts that it would help.

I, too, do not use front tags and have been stopped once by a State Trooper because of it.

Hopefully this time we can get the word out.

Thanks again.

We should propose a no front tag proposal to Maryland Represenatives. The required front tag law is stupid.

If we ban together and we get the message out among other car enthusiasts as well as car clubs we could likely defeat the State Police's opposition vote. Please write your state representatives, then we can remove it from every state that requires front plates.

Yep, ditto here.

$50!

I got a new grille for the car when I repainted it though, and it does not have the holes to mount the tag adapter. I'm wondering how long before I get nailed for it.

I just learned today that this bill was dropped due to pressure from members of the State Police and Police Agencies in Virginia. The only way that we can ever get this legislation passed is if we write our representatives to re-introduce this and then support it. As long as many of us (who actually support this, of course) continue to wait for the other man/woman to write their representatives for them, we will always be forced to have two tags and pay the fines if we disobey, which I do and will.

I wish I had read this post before the bill was rejected. The Car Club Council of Central Virginia was set up to fight for the rights of auto enthusiasts all over the state. Perhaps in the future we may be able to sway more votes in our favor.

Thanks Nic. If we wrote our representatives (that is the car clubs and board frequenters), asking them to re-introduce it they likely will. This is the second time it has come up in two years, but as hard as I try, I don't seem to get the word out quick enough. I posted on MAFBA, here and HR3rdgen. I will be sure to get in touch with you on this. Actually, I really should have remembered you kept up with these things, as I remember you informing us about that anti-noise group.

In 2002 Delegate Allen Louderback introduced the first version of this bill that I'm aware of, HB280. He is, according to the email he sent me in 2002, a friend to those of us that would like only one tag.

Whoa! Wait a minute I found that he has re-introduced a bill this year concerning this:

HB 1428.

Here is the info:

http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp...031+sum+HB1428

Nic, can you help me get the word out?

PLEASE WRITE YOUR REPRESENTATIVES PEOPLE!

Basically that just means it passed in the house, but failed in the senate. I agree that the front license plate law is absurd and I'll definitely make it a point to see what we can do about changing it.

Nic, the poli. sci. major who hopes to get involved with state government one day.

Thanks Nic. If we can get the word out, eventually, it will pass. The hardest part is getting people to actually write a short letter that takes 5 minutes, or make a short phone call to their representatives to support this. Isn't that worth it so you don't get hassled by the Police? Instead people get pulled over for this and bitch and moan about it but never do a thing to change it. (I have a friend whom I'm refering to here).

I've posted on several boards, and the CCCV and wrote my Representatives (one who supports it and one who votes against it because he has his lips so far up the State Police collective ***** he probably eats corn), but I also wrote Delegate Louderback asking him to please submit it again next year and to praise his work. He proposed HB280 last year and proposed basically the same bill this year. He is our friend on this issue.

I ask you Virginians, again, please write your representatives and tell them you would like this legislation to be proposed again, and for your reps to support it.

Thanks for your time.

From my perspective.....

OK guys....from a Va Cop....I could not give a $h!t any less if someone has their front plate or not. We (my agency) hardly ever, if at all, use the front plate on a vehicle for police biz. About the only thing the law would be good for is to use as a reason to make a stop, looking for something else! (i.e., drunk, suspended, weapons, dope, etc...) and that is for a ***** who is bored or too lazy to do anything else.
Yeah, I've got a front plate on my 'bird, it's the law, I have to. If you had your plate layed up in your front window on the dash, not attached to anything, I would bet less than 1 out of 1,000 cops in Va would write you for it.
I look forward to the day I can rip my front plate off and not **** off my Chief. I just hope the law is repealled before I need a new paint job!!!

Virginyan, thanks for your opinion and information. I am not a person against the Police, because I know that the majority only enforce laws that are made and don't do it just to be a "*****." I'm against the law itself, as there are 19 states that do not require front tags. I also know that it is often our own attitudes that bring on the "*****" officer. So, just to make sure it doesn't come off different, I have nothing against the Police, it's the law that must go. But that law won't go away until the people ask for it to go away, and so far that makes me and other's who want it to go, in the minority.

Thanks again for adding to this and showing your point of view as an Officer.
