LB Window Polish - Poor mans method

Was looking at the 3M Polishing Compound, its expensive. 64 bucks. Ingredients say Cerium Oxide so thought I'd try that. So I did. Let me warn you, this stuff makes a mess.... but it works! It will get everywhere, including your lungs. wear a mask. tape off. it will stick to anything that isn't waxed. it wants to embedded in rubber, cement, just about anything, so go easy be prepared for a detail of the car immediately afterwards.

Took water spots off effortlessly, takes minor scratches out, eh, with some work. Take the powder, add water to make a paste. keep a spray bottle of water readily available. as it starts to dry out, just squirt a little water and it springs back. its hard to tell when you have used it up because it keeps coming back. was able to do all windows with about 5 oz, maybe 4. have a few scratches left to remove that are removable.

A remarkable difference when you wash the windows. very happy with the results.

I am wondering if the 3M makes less of a mess. If it does, it may be worth the upcharge, especially if it works better. 8oz of the Gordon Glass Cerium Oxide was 12 bucks.

OMG, no wonder it is going all over the place! Every kit that I have seen uses a 3" diameter (or smaller) wheel in a drill motor.

Re: LB Window Polish - Poor mans method

Results look very good. I did this on my GTA but with Chemical Guys Waterspot Rx. Worked great (see pics here). I also bought CarPro Ceriglass (same AI as the 3M) and a glass polishing pad to use on the windshield of my Camry with heavy wiper scratches. Ceriglass is a ready-to-use formula so no mixing is required. It's less messy, but man does it dust like crazy. It also worked quite well. It removed all the water spots quite easily (which were the least of my worries), most if not all of the light wiper marks, and significantly reduced the appearance of the one band of heavy scratches from the wipers. I should probably make another attempt to completely remove the scratches but at least it doesn't distract me while driving anymore.

What size disk did you use? As one person suggested, maybe 6" disk too big. I don't think I will use this method again. Would like something less dusty. Which of your's had the least amount of dust?

Re: LB Window Polish - Poor mans method

I used 5.5" pads (orange foam pad with Waterspot Rx, rayon glass polishing pad with Ceriglass) on a 5" backing plate on my PC7424XP in both cases.

I don't think the pad or machine is the issue necessarily. Dusting should be expected with just about any compound or polish (some more than others); just the nature of the beast. But a lot has to do with how much product you use and the polishing technique. Too little product will cause the pad to heat up and the product will dry out quickly causing it to dust. Too much, and you'll be slinging product everywhere making a mess. To reduce dusting, make sure a) you're using enough product and b) a quick spritz of water on the glass after a couple passes will help as well. Looking back, I don't think i used enough product with the Ceriglass and was a little slow to add water when things started to dry out. Both dusted about the same, but could have been less with a little tweaking of my process and technique.

I use the glass stove top cleaner and a helluva lot of elbow grease. It's cheap and effective for a daily driver
