FREE 1984 firebird!

Howdy, My name is Owen and Im new to the site. I've been lurking for about month or so, because my buddy just gave me his 84 fire bird . It was his first car back in the day and was sitting in his drive way for about 10 years. At one point I guess he started to make it into a "race" car and added eibach suspension, 8 point role cage and sway bars (last two still not installed yet).
Surprisingly it started up the first time! but then I was disappointed because the engine sucks >_<. Its the stock V6 thats been rebuilt, board out and has bigger cams. the thing has like 800 miles on it.. were those engines just really that bad but gives me a reason to but a 350 in it .

Re: FREE 1984 firebird!

So the engine sucks but its been ''bored out and bigger cams''? Sounds like he fed you some bed time stories. Wheels arent rare, hell the keychain might be more rare.

Looks like a nice car, but please don't be yanking everything you think you don't need. Those 20lbs you take off won't make you any faster...

thanks for the nice welcome.....
Im just going off what my buddy told and frankly I dont care if its true or not the car was free
I know "20lb" wont make me go faster I aint some ***** thinking removing my interior will make me go so much faster >_< I just have no need for a dash, heater core or AC so why keep the wiring for it?

Re: FREE 1984 firebird!

No need for a Dash? Heater Core has no wiring.. As far as the A/C it does not have many wires going to it. At max its 1lb. Just leave it in there. Swap in the A/C Delete Box and be done with it.

Good luck with the car, hopefully it doesnt turn up in a Junkyard from a electrical fire.

Re: FREE 1984 firebird!

first off, welcome!

and sadly yes, the N/A v6 cars are slow turds. Hard to move a 3400lb with an anemic little v6.

what are the plans for the car? if your using it on the street, i would also advise to keep the interior, wiring ect intact. there are MUCH better places to loose weight. a fiberglass hood will save you an easy 30-40 lbs, and you wont have icicles on your nose in the wintertime.

If its a track only car, then gut away and wire from sratch as needed. DO NOT just start chopping blindly in the goop. That will just lead to headaches. HAve a plan first. What are you doing for gauges? how about lighting, tail lights, turn signals, horns, and other electric controls. If the only reason you are removing the interior is to save weight, then like i said earlier, there are much better places to shed weight.

the wheels are from a 87? formy. they should be 16x8 and thats the only year they made them that way. Doesnt make them valuable though....

Re: FREE 1984 firebird!

Its slowly gonna be for the track and yes I know it wont save that much weight but 75 percent of the interior was gone any ways. I'm gonna keep the tail lights, horn, turn signals etc just so I can drive it on the road once and awhile. but any thing I dont need is going! Its my second car so I dont have to worry about comfort really and probably wont even drive it during the winter. The car will mostly be under construction this winter too. I plan on getting most of the safety stuff done first like role cage, padding etc and making sure the suspension can handle whatever power I put behind it.
As for guages I have the stock ones zipped tied in for now but Im not to impressed with them so I'll probably get some unversal ones I dont care what they are or how they look as long as they work haha!
good to know that the v6 isnt so hott. I really want to put a chevy 350 in it. seems like a fun project for the winter when work is slow. I cant wait to have enough power to get this car to snap out just for the fun of it haha!
thanks for the info too on the wheels my friend is very cocky about how awesome this car is and Im just trying to figure out whats a fib and whats real. Im exited to get back in the word of muscle cars, its been awhile

Welcome to TGO man! Score with the bird! You gonna turbo it? Carlos, I'm dissapointed. Your profile says your a friendly Mexican. Don't seem to be the case here.

Re: FREE 1984 firebird!

I think Carlos is just trying to say that he shouldn't go ripping the whole car apart and causing a bunch of problems that weren't there to begin with.

Regardless..welcome to TGO! That's definitely a nice bird other than the rust spot on the hood.

Re: FREE 1984 firebird!

Cool as hell you got the car for free! Yes, the early V-6's are slow, but once you get above 40mph, they wind up pretty fast. My 82 v-6 is a smog machine, but my TTA takes care of my speed needs. The early ones in good shape are getting harder to find, so before you go and rip out stuff, have a good plan. The plastics can be brittle, and certain parts are almost impossible to find in decent shape. Good luck with the car!

Not so. Those wheels were standard on Trans Ams and optional on Formulas starting in '85. My '86 T/A came with those wheels. I believe they were available through 1990.

Transmission: 700R4 newly rebuilt by Cottman's
Axle/Gears: Probably 303, honestly I'm not sure
Re: FREE 1984 firebird!

Put a turbo or supercharger in that sucker, maybe even some NOS and it will be running with the rest of us. Its a rebuilt engine so it should take the abuse the nitrous and charger will give it, however that might get a little tricky with that cam. I also agree with the others, don't go taking anything out of it, you should have enough room under that hood for the aforementioned goods, I wish mine had a/c. You got my 2-cents. segn85

Re: FREE 1984 firebird!

That car looks really good. Is the hood the only part thats not perfect, if so get it painted to match and you've got a beautiful classic car. You can buy everything thats missing in the interior for very cheap probably 200 to 300 hundred dollars. Then you have a car that turns heads and when you have the time you can fix up the motor. Theres some fast v6 cars, check the v6 section. YOU CAN RUN 12's

Since were taking wild guesses... I think 85-87 were convex, as pictured above, 88+ were concave.
