Maverick's New 85 Camaro!
Check it out guys, I'm new to Camaro's and to TGO, but I'd like to show off my new ride/summer project!
First the great news
Next the bad news
And finally, the not-totally-sure-yet news...
First the great news
- 56K Original Miles
- Zero Rust
- T-Tops don't leak
- New Brakes
- New Kumho Tires
- After Market Dual Exhaust
- Paint is in fantastic shape
- Interior is in decent shape
- OEM Original Leather T-Top Travel Bag
- Decent Kenmore CD Player Head Unit
- Amazingly, dashboard has zero cracks (Incredible for a 32 year old 3rd Gen Camaro!!)
Next the bad news
- All Inner and Outer Tie Rods are in rough shape
- Front Struts Leaking Badly
- AC Needs to be re-added
- Some lights in dashboard are not working
- Various oil leaks
- Trans Pan Gasket and Speedometer Housing Seal Leaking
- Some minor smoke on startup
- Valve Stem Seals are worn
- CD Player works, but radio cannot tune into any FM/AM Stations
- Antenna will not fully extend and/or fully retract
And finally, the not-totally-sure-yet news...
- The 305 Engine! Should I have held out until I could find a proper 350???
- The used car interior smell. Maybe it's just an old car, I will have to research how to freshen it up!
- The classic Chevy 'Bright Blue' WA8587 Original Paint. Not sure if I love it yet!
- I've always been a massive fan of the 91/92 Aero Ground Effects and Spoiler, I may have to do a swap.
- The 16-inch IROC Rims are great, but they have some road rash, and they have been spray painted.
- Not sure if this particular IROC came with the G92 Package??

Re: Maverick's New 85 Camaro!
Well, what a small world!!!
A couple a weeks ago, I got a call from a shop I've used, (knowing I'm into 3rd gens), to advise the owner of this car on it's value and what the car needs. I said, not only would I do that, I'll swing by the shop. I talked to the owner for about an hour.
A week later, I was going for a walk with my wife in Roselle, and I see who I presume must be you, driving right by me with the T-tops off. You looked like you were having a blast!
Congrats! Cool car. But you MUST refinish those wheels. Previous owner hit them with a spray can.
If you're local, let me know if you need any tips.
Hope to see you at local cruise nights and at ThirdGen Expo!

Re: Maverick's New 85 Camaro!
Oh, two things....
The '85 LB9 IROC-Z didn't get a G92, but they ALL came with a G92-esque 3.42 rear gear. And all '85 LB9s had the L69 cam, not the much maligned "peanut cam".
The '85 Bright Blue Metallic is slightly lighter than the '86-'90. If you look at the hood and top half of the passenger door, they were repainted the darker '86-'90 blue. The painter was not aware that they were two different colors.

Great looking Z! The majority of what you listed for issues won't be that bad to fix if you're semi mechanically inclined... Keep us up to speed on your progress and enjoy the new ride!

Hi Chazman - yea wow, what a small world. Thanks for the info!
That was definitely me...are you out in the NW suburbs?
I plan to do a bunch of local shows and head out to the 3rd gen expo as well, was just looking at that post recently, Lake Zurich is not far at all!
OK, so for this upcoming week or so, I'll be redoing the struts, strut mounts, rear shocks, coils, and tie rods with totally new equipment.
Also adding a Spohn Wonder Bar tot he front.
After I get paid next month, I think I will do the Outer SFC's - But I might need help or a suggestion on how to weld them on.

Re: Maverick's New 85 Camaro!
Good luck with it! There were a number of minor interior electrical issues when I saw it. Bad fuse?
Just a whole bunch of silver spray can restoration the previous owner did on the wheels and underhood, that I'd want to reverse immediately if I owned it.
But, that's why you got a good deal! I told the previous owner to fix all that little stuff and ask for another $2K. Glad you got it, looks like it's in good hands.

Welcome, Maverick! Good looking IROC! I actually considered buying that very one a while back but didn't have the funds at the time. Glad you're happy with her!

Re: Maverick's New 85 Camaro!
Hey thanks guys....Bud54 I see you're not too far away, I went undergrad at ISU, so maybe I'll road trip it down there one of these days and grab some cheeseballs and beers at the Pub II in Normal! We should cruise!
Hi chazman, I have not investigated yet on the electrical, so it could be a fuse.
Regarding electric I have these issues: Some lights are out on the dash, the driver side door automatic lock button does not work correctly, they antenna doesn't extend/retract correctly, and a few head/rear lights are dim or out completely.
Will take a stab at some of this Saturday.

Re: Maverick's New 85 Camaro!
congrats man, i thought i saw that car on craigslist a few weeks back- hope to see you at the expo!
If you are really set on different wheels and the ground effects and the 350 i would ALMOST (not entirely) suggest cleaning this one, doing all of the dirty work you are doing now, learning the ropes on the thirdgens like chazman said and then flipping it to get a 91-92 Z. It looks like it could be a really really great original "low mileage" example.
Otherwise its your car, do what you want and you have a fantastic starting point.

consider replacing the centerlink along with the tie rods. that way everything is new before you take it to the alignment shop.
