My 1989 hodgepodge

*disclaimer, I looked around and didn't see a new members area, excuse me if i missed it, I apologize!

Here is my "new" 1989 Camaro Iroc z28,(148,000) at least according to the vin..

I picked up this beautiful lady for $1500. She needs a lot of love, which was my plan to begin with. I went to check out the car, snapped a pic of the RPO list in the center console, and went home to research. The car has a 5- speed manual in it. She runs, albeit with a high idle..AND the RPO list said it was a z28, and its manual, so I was sold.

I bring it home (30 mile drive) and she makes it fine.
I start to look further into my RPO list, which, hindsight is 20/20.

codes for automatic transmission.
codes for black paint with a blue stripe.
codes for fog lights.
etc..

Another thing i noted was the spedometer goes to 115, not 145. Which I just may be remembering incorrectly... but .. vin in the front windshield matches the RPO code list....

Only spent $1500 on it, still going to fix her and make her my own, but is there anything you guys can think of that i'm not thinking of? Clearly the trans was swapped.. but why paint over the stripes? and No stickers on the doors.. so idk what is going on. ANY help is appreciated guys.

Re: My 1989 hodgepodge

look for rust first thing ... if it is not rusted to crap under it, you are good ... if i remember right, only way to get a z28 in 89 was if it was an iroc also ... sounds like it is a mid range iroc and a good car to start on ... looks like it has some front end repairs, so make sure nothing was bent

Re: My 1989 hodgepodge

When I checked it out on the street, me and my friend (certified mechanic) went over it best be good, prior owners lowered it... sigh lol As for rust, very surprised how minimal there was on the frame and panels. We tore down the side walls in the hatch and the panels were still clean, no bodywork. Some body rust on the lower parts of the body as expected. And yeah, the front end looks funky, I'm going to take as much as i can off and see what I have to work with. Idk how reliable "carfax" is, but that didn't report any accidents, and the title I got with it is clean.

Re: My 1989 hodgepodge

1SC should have power seat, windows, tilt, cruise, all the good stuff. T-tops, A/C black with the blue stripe - nice combo!

The 115 speedo came with the peanut cam - the LB9/5spd combo or the L98/auto would get the higher speedo.

Oh boy, none of that is in this car hahaha. Manual Windows, manual seat, I feel like someone built this car like a Lego project. I'm going to have to check the vin on each piece of this car and see what happened. Although it does have the T tops!

Re: My 1989 hodgepodge

So, all the vins match. The doors, the hood, the hatch. That's a good sign. . I gutted the inside today to start fresh. Slight rust on passenger side. Seems it should be an easy fix though. Anyone know a reason that the RPO code would list power windows and all that, but have manual Windows instead?

A31 is actually the RPO for power windows. It looks like in 89 1SC didn't include power windows, 1SD would have.

Here are a couple window stickers from 89, if you look closely you can see that the 1SC window sticker didn't have power windows while the one with 1SD does.

I think you got the great start on a project there. TPI, 5 s-speed (even if it isn't original) and not Flintstone floor boards.

Your car came with an LB9, 700R4, 2.73 posi and rear drums from the factory.

Good luck with it. Can't beat the price!

Absolutely! I am enjoying the thought of me saving her! Cause the other owners did not seem to love her.

Thank you so much for that info, its been sitting in the back of my head. I figure that since it has OEM doors and hood, it couldn't have been in that bad of an accident for the front end to be replaced. Fingers crossed. And that's good to hear, for old car, she seems to have held up pretty well.

Thank you! and nope, I wanted a project, and I got one!

and just a little show of previous owners... they spray painted the floor black, and tried to spray paint the red paneling black too. I think there is an actual spray to use on upholstery? But I can't be certain.

Re: My 1989 hodgepodge

Some tips on cleaning the carpet:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/auto...ve-carpet.html

I've used this for painting door panels, it actually worked rather well:

http://www.autozone.com/paint-and-bo...nyl-and-fabric

Once I sprayed it I just re-fluffed the carpet with a nylon brush.

Re: My 1989 hodgepodge

Thanks Amorget, that'll be good for the carpeting that I can't replace. As for the floor, already in a dumpster, it was disgusting /=. In other news, I realized the passenger door isn't from my car, idk why I thought I read my vin on there. But confirmed its not mine! And it doesn't match the body lines, so I need to figure out if the front quarter panel is bent, or the door. It looks like the door.

Also, I wire wheeled the floors and found a few holes about the size of a dime. I checked out the floor panels from underneath the car and there's no rust at all. Do I have to sheet metal patch it? Or is there a product I can use to fill in the spots and thicken the area? There's so much information on this forum, I'm trying to read it all at once and it's over whelming.

Re: My 1989 hodgepodge

Your best bet is to take a few good pictures and ask in a new thread in the "Body" section. It'll get more attention and answers there rather than being buried in a build thread.

Thanks! Got a quick answer over there.

SO another question, and I can't thank you guys enough for the help.

Old owner said he scrapped the original seats and put these in, Can anyone tell me what they are from? I want to say they are the correct seats? just from another car.? I want to re upholster them and saw "lethal Interiors" has anyone dealt with them?> They seem to do good work. My interior is going to be Black and Blue and that design on the seats would look nice, or so I think.

They sure look like Camaro seats to me. They look identical to the set I have out of a 1991 Z28.

Lethal Interiors has a really good rep. Quick site search returned this thread on her work: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/inte...sterer-fl.html

Those are grey or black, (can't tell), custom cloth seats for an '88 to '92 Camaro. If there are no rips, give them a good cleaning, you may be surprised.

Yeah absolutely, I'm just preparing for the worst because previous owners literally spray painted the entire interior. The whole interior use to be gray, but now it's "black". And they were terrible painters

And thanks guys!

Re: My 1989 hodgepodge

Those seat backs look like 3rd gen camaro seat backs and the bucket part looks like the 4th gen style.

Regardless, its not too bad looking. Better than the 87 Iroc I just picked up. I am not super sure what to expect with that gear ratio and manual, but, the manuals got higher gears usually so it might seem sort of underpowered compared to what you are used to.
