That is really sharp. I'm trying to get my son to paint his 2nd gen that color.

Question on your painting, I'm trying to learn how, do you not have to take a car down to bare metal to change the color? My 89 is black and want to go to red.

Re: Its Time- My 87 IROC LT1/T56 swap and more

thanks- what does your son have?

So this is the first car i have actually sprayed but i have done the prep work on a few others- in all instances i have not gone to bare metal unless other work required it. the OEM primers are pretty good and work to help adhesion. Just sand it with 400 grit and shoot your primer over it. If you go to bare metal in more than a few spots you will want to use an etching primer to promote adhesion between the metal and whatever primer you are using.

I talked to a few shops before i bought my paint and materials. also check out Southern Polyurethanes, they have a pretty good customer service department and can answer lots of your questions. SPI is good for the pre base coat materials and the clear, but they dont do the color coat, just not in their biz model.

Good luck!

Re: Its Time- My 87 IROC LT1/T56 swap and more

Well I just spent the weekend looking through some pictures on my phone of the camaro and realized i have not updated this thread with what i did over the winter-

I got tired of the multi-colored parts in the engine bay and decided wrinkled black was the way to go, so i took off the valve covers, stripped them and painted them, I painted the vanes silver and then masked them off rather than polishing them for durability.

while I was in there i replaced the valve springs, thought about RR but had some interference with the iron head and the pushrods.

after that was done i went ahead and "upgraded" to the C5 brakes up front. I had some nasty squealing from the brakes originally and found some misalignment with the spindle bracket to the spindle, so it was a good time to get everything straightened out-

Re: Its Time- My 87 IROC LT1/T56 swap and more

and finally, just recently, i was still not happy looking under the hood. The fuel rails were pretty tarnished and couldnt get them clean. I also noticed my paint was flaking off of the intake. So i went a fabbed up an intake/fuel rail cover. the benefits of working at sheet metal fab place-

that is a piece of brushed stainless under the slots on top of the intake. I think it covered up all of the wiring etc pretty well. Engine bay is night and day better.

Re: Its Time- My 87 IROC LT1/T56 swap and more

In going through all of my pictures I realized I don't have any of the car with the tops off, consider that fixed. Especially since that was most of why I bought this car...

Where did you buy your shift ****? 12 or 16mm threads?

Nah I knew it was a Cobra ****, just wondering where you got it.

I'm looking at which options are cheaper for me. Either:

1 - Cobra **** ($68 Pony Tuning) + 12mm handle for my MGW shifter ($23 MGW) = $91

2 - Hurst/SLP **** ($78 Summit) + new shift pattern indicator ($13 Hawks) = $91

Since they're equal I went the Cobra shifter.

I like mine, but with the drill and tap i fit it to my Pro 5.0 shifter handle.
