Record of progress on my 91 rs.
My name is anthony, im from hattiesburg ms. This is the first thread I've started and I hope I put it in the right place. I just wanted a way to keep up with and share everything I do to my car so I'll have somewhere to go back to later to enjoy the memories.
Ok so what I have now... I traded my 2006 Honda cbr F4I for this 91 camaro rs. The car is supposed to have a tbi 350 but I'm yet to find an engine code to verify that. So far I have changed the alternator and starter and borrowed a new battery until I can afford my own. The car was having trouble starting so I put in the alternator, didn't solve the problem so I put in a starter I had laying around from my dad's diet track car, it spun but the teeth wouldn't reach the flywheel so I bought a new starter yesterday from oreilys and after realizing I had let my battery die somehow it's cranking fine but only time will tell if it stays that way when it gets hot. If it still won't start when the engine is hot I may try some sort of insulation on the solenoid?

Asuming i dont have any more starting problems my next project will be to get rid of all the smog pump plumbing and get a pulley to delete the pump. Not for any power gains, just to clean up the engine bay.

Re: Record of progress on my 91 rs.
So far my new starter is working great. Now I have a list of things I can think of and prices based on short searches.
Windshield $175
Dash pad $35
Windshield wipers $15
Smog pump delete pulley $50
Console plastics $65 used
Then there's
driver side mirror
cracks in gfs
sunroof seal
trunk plastics
rear plastics
console lid
rear and front seats
door mouldings
bouncing in rear at 80mph
idle adjustment too low
spark plugs
windshield
speedometer $80
Window moldings $180
Door panels $200
Fuel filter $10
Transmission filter $20/fluid $20
So I'm estimating around $1000 in parts to reach my goal of reliable nice daily driver. Then I can start any customizing that may come.

Re: Record of progress on my 91 rs.
Patched a place in the exhaust where someone had cut halfway thru with a sawzall with a strip of exhaust tape
Sadly the car didn't crank again today so the starter didn't solve my cranking issue completely. Sure it it didn't hurt tho. Anyway now I gotta get a new starter wire and hope that works. Still thinking an ignition switch might be the culprit but wires cheaper so let's hope that fixes it.

That's quite a list. But if it was easy, everybody would have one, right?
Being a '91, does yours have the key with the chip in it? I have read that those can be very troublesome with no-starts.

That makes more sense than anything else I can think of. Do you have any clue how much a repair/replacement would cost? Or can it be bypassed?

Re: Record of progress on my 91 rs.
Had to bring car to a mechanic finally. He did the following;
Perform level 1 diagnostics
replace 2 battery terminal ends
repaired and soldered #2 injector harness
repair and solder broken TPS sensor wiring
repaired broken wiring to MAP sensor
found hole burned thru distributor cap and rotor/replace
$324 later she's finally running and starting great. Thanks to Bedrock Customs in Hattiesburg off 98 going toward columbia.

Re: Record of progress on my 91 rs.
Well the car worked great for half a day. Went to get my grandma a burger and idle started fluctuating again then it died, got it to crank but when I got home it wouldn't even turn over again... $325 for nothing I guess.

Well, certainly not for nothing. If the car had all those issues, it was money well spent, even if it did not resolve your immediate problem.

Re: Record of progress on my 91 rs.
Yea your right. The mechanic took the car back and found some relays he thought we're bad, changed them at no cost. haven't had any idle or starting issues for two days now.the problem is when he had the car it would crank every time so he couldn't really do much. Good guy tho, I'd recommend his shop to anybody, because he didn't have to have another look at the car for free but he did so he stands by his work.

Most mechanics around our neck of the woods wont or at least do not like working on these cars at all.
