1989 IROC-Z28 Convertible Blue
Brief History. Purchased in Illinois in 1992 at a Dealership. I am the 2nd owner. I drove the car as a daily driver for about 8 years. The car was garage kept for a lot of this, but not all. In around 2001 I was in a car accident and the front was badly damaged. I was able to drive the car home and park it in the garage, but due to extenuating circumstances nothing was covered by my insurance. I bought a new front end and quarter panels and tried to get some of it fixed myself, but it was too much and too expensive and I was broke so the car became part of the garage and after a few years was completely covered up by boxes etc.
Fast forward 12 years later. In March 2013 my wife and I decided to use money I had set aside to fix the car up. Here is what it looked like in March. I will post more as a timeline.

March 2013 - Mechanic Shop to get it running again
I took it to the nearest vintage garage and the car was given a new gas tank, fuel pump, assembly unit, filter, line, distributor cap, oil change and it was up and running.
I also went ahead and replaced the end links as they were completely rotted out. I then immediately drove it to the body shop, where the front end was put back on, lights were replaced and the bumper was repainted. Here is the new bumper and new HID headlights.
You will notice the fenders are cut in as well, to ease painting later.

May 2013 Legal body work complete
Headlights are done and wired, halos are wired, and it now has a brand new hood, this is enough to get it to the next step. You can see below the new halos, and new hood. I also smoked out the sidemarkers and front bumper signals. One side shows the orange sidemarker, the other the black one. Same with the front bumper.

June 2013 - Straight to Performance shop
Here is where some things paid off. I had Flowmaster 80s put on. 3" from headers to tailpipe. I also had new master and boost cylinders replaced. Just FYI if your master cylinder leaks badly in a 3rd gen car it will pool up in the back seat floor board. This stumped the mechanic at first! It also ruined the carpet and drivers seat. The interior was shot already though so it wasn't a huge deal. I took some pictures here of the interior before it was redone.
I took it to NTB after this (which ended up being July as it was in shop 2 weeks due to 4th of july week shop was closed). I put on speed rated Sumitomo's, new swaybar and balljoints. It passed inspection (yay!)

July 2013 - Trip to Cartoys
I took it to Cartoys where they put in 6 Infinity Kappa speakers, JL sub, Alpine Amp and Kenwood Receiver. I also had them put in a Clifford alarm system with remote start and gps App tracking.

August 2013 - We take a trip to ASM and meet Sue!
This was a great time. We got to visit Sue from Discovery's Fast N Loud and pick out the color and design for the interior. That's my daughter with Sue. Showing some pics here of the gutting of the interior. It hurt a little! Notice the colors we picked and the interior was light gray.

October 2013 - New Chrome Rims
I found someone online selling the 1990 16" chrome rims.
Unfortunately I had to also buy new Sumitomo wheels and my old ones were only 3 months old :/

Theme
I have decided to go with an American theme.
I haven't decided how I want the outside paint to be. Here is one photoshop'ed option.

Re: Theme
Nice car man. Glad you saved it. I normally don't care for the American flag themed vehicles, but if you keep it close to that shop of it... I do! It looks great and is not so in your face to be obnoxious. Keep posting pics man.

Re: Theme
I really love the blue color, so I am hesitant, however, I was thinking like the above pic but in a pearlesque style. Where it is barely there depending on the sun. I am still not 100% because I love the blue, but it sure would make it unique!

Been in paint now for almost 2 months. Took it almost completely apart. Here's initial sanding.

Buffing out, went ahead and threw a brand new windshield in. Even though the old one wasn't bad it had a lot of aging pits in it. Looks way better. Repainted the windshield wipers and cowl there too.
Still putting it back together. Hope to be done this weekend!

Beautiful! And there's nothing that gives an old car that new car feel like looking out a new windshield.

If you don't mind, send me your paint shop's information and a ballpark on pricing. I'm planning to get mine painted this summer or maybe fall when it cools down a little.

Re: 1989 IROC-Z28 Convertible Blue
Couple weeks ago but picked up Memorial Day 1st place! I love it because it is the theme of my car, which will be more apparent under the hood soon!
Over 100 cars. Had a blast and helped the JROTC!
I also got a new alternator and changed a few parts in the engine, Will get a picture shortly.

Re: 1989 IROC-Z28 Convertible Blue
A little bit since I have had an update. Since I have been going to shows a bit more I decided I wanted to do some more led work and I don't want a dead battery. So I wired a deep cycle Optima battery into the trunk with 100 amp circuit breakers.
During a show i turn off the circuit breaker and the front battery isn't drained. I bought a Blue Sea Systems fuse block (made for boats really) and mounted it under the passenger dash. It is run from the back battery. I then proceeded to add the following.
1. 2 sets of halos (one white, one blue)
2. Underneath UFO style LED lights
3. Engine Wifi UFO style LED lights
4. Alpine Amp
I am planning on putting some blue lights inside the car to light up the interior. I have blue leds everywhere but they only turn on when the car doors are open or lights are on. I want something to light it up for evening car shows.
I know some people hate LEDs but I felt it fit the time period of these cars and I like to stand out!

Is that a repainting of the original "blue" that these cars came with or is it a custom color? Its BEAUTIFUL!!

Very nice ride. Paint looks nice and slick. Interior is first class.. Rims and tires look great when at first I thought would be too small. Great job overall

Re: 1989 IROC-Z28 Convertible Blue
Oh I also bought me a battery maintainer, tired of the car being dead after a while. (mostly because of alarm system and me being lazy and not starting it every couple weeks during the winter).
I ordered some more LEDs to put under the wheel wells and I picked up a battery Kill switch with key and plan on installing it this weekend, mainly for indoor car shows.
