Is this car worth $3,500 (I don't think so)
I'm always on the lookout for a teal 92 z. Found this one in York, PA and called the seller to get some more info.
Car has 133,000 miles and current owner is a younger female who bought it from some guy. Apparently prior owner swapped in a 350 (described to me as having a 350). Car does have t-tops. Lady said prior owner used to show the car but makes me wonder as the seats show a lot of wear and are dirty. Current owner might not have taken car of car at all.
Even if 350 swap was done correctly I think it needs a little too much work for that price plus with the higher mileage. Needs chin spoiler repainted, spoiler put back on and rear deck painted, seats repaired and a good wet vac wash.
I saw an add for a mint 92 teal z this past summer. $5,800 with $75,000 miles. People always think they have a car that is worth more than what it really is. I copied the post and pics below.
http://york.craigslist.org/cto/2773559716.html
"One of the original muscle cars. 1992 Camaro Iroc Z28 25th year anniversary edition. Teal Blue, cream interior. Good condition but needs some body work on rear hatch window area. Original spoiler included but nit installed. Current Inspection. No significant mechanical issues. Good tread. Engine modifications and newer replacements. For details call 717-286-4907 ask for Olivia. Quick sale needed, price of course is negotiable."

How much cheaper do you want it for? For crying out loud, it isn't like $3,500 is a crazy amount for a 92 Z, if the body is decent.
Its not worth less than $3,000 if its a solid car.

That's a easy fix, you can get a used hatch as cheep as $50 bucks.

I think for any running driving car 3500 is pretty good. PLUS it wont depreciate!

I've seen a few cars for sale that said they were teal but looked more blue in the pictures like the ones I posted. One owner said that the teal color changes between green and blue. Is this true? Most pics I've seen on this site are really teal color. Also, I have a few used teal body parts and you can easily tell they are teal. Confused, some look green teal and others more blue teal in post below.

Seller got back to me. She spoke with original owner who did engine swap not too long ago. New engine has 8,000 miles on it out of 133,000 total for car. Still an interesting car since you could get a t-top car with a 350. Think I'm looking for a more original car and willing to pay some more money for it. Maybe I should stop looking and finish my current project

I wouldn't pay $3500, but if you like the car I think $3k for is reasonable for all parties involved. I would bet it needs some bushings, and possibly tie-rods and ball joints.

Re: Is this car worth $3,500 (I don't think so)
I think you guys are too wrapped up with the fact that it's a '92 Z28. From the pictures i see it looks like it's been beat and not properly cared for. if this was an 88 IROC we'd say $3500 is nuts so I don't see why the fact that it's a '92 Z makes it so much more desirable. Especially if it's originally a 305 automatic 2.73 drum brake car, which it probably is.
They say it was a "350" swap, but your best bet is to check the casting numbers on the block...too many people claim it's a "350" because it is a V8 and to get more money than it's worth. The key thing to realize here is, a girl bought the car on a guys word. Just think about it for a second.
http://outintheshop.com/faq/casting/castings2.html
I personally would probably pay nothing more than 2k. Lots of mileage, and probably needs lots of things replaced. If anything is original on that car, mostly suspension, it all needs new stuff quite frankly.
...and if the front sway bar bushings haven't ever been touched, I guarantee you they are non-existent on that car lol.
I paid $4k for my 5-sp RS @ 90k miles. Key differences between my car and the Z, my car doesn't have power locks/windows and fog lights. I also have a 305tbi for the time being, which may I add, runs flawless.

Re: Is this car worth $3,500 (I don't think so)
I'd say it's a good asking price, but $2500-3000 maybe more realistic. I got my 86 sport coupe summer of 2010 for $4250. It had just under 70,000 on it and was a California car. It had only 4000 miles on the drive train. Built 355, upgraded t-5, and 373's with a locker. Right now it is in the process of a repaint. I have done many things to it since I got it. Very solid car.

I agree with most comments here, $3000 is about the top for that car based on what I see in the photos.

Fact is, we can only tell so much from looking/reading, drive the car, see how it is, listen for anything funny (popping/clinking/rattles), and punch it, see if it has the power of a 350. I still suggest looking at the casting number.
You can tell a kid owned it at one time, because they put a superman sticker on the front bumper...

There's a teal RS near me in much better looking shape than that with an asking price of about 4 grand, I think... been on the lot a while and probably negotiable:

Unfortunately he doesn't have a picture. And it's a real Teal RS, that off green color...

How many 91-92 Z28's do you see out there for under $3500?? I know in this area most that are in decent condition are $4000+. I would have the car checked out (the engine install/wiring/rust) but if everything checked out its looks like its worth buying for the asking price.

I would try to get the original owners phone number because you need to ask him/her questions about the engines build and what kind of (tuning) was needed or any other questions you may have concerning,transmission/etc.
By the way blue book value is just under 2,000.00 and I don't see any thing special on that car.At this point the "motor" is the thing I would be concerned with because any one can say, "Oh yeah, that's a new 350 I just put in".The worst part of telling if it is a 350 is where GM decided to put the ID #but that's the only way I know of telling the difference between a 305 or 350.May be you could ask for some receipts concerning the engine.Even though I have a very nice 305 that I love I still would "NOT" considered a 305 .

Re: Is this car worth $3,500 (I don't think so)
Can't believe this thread is still going!
After hearing about the cars history, I quickly decided not to go for it. I am looking for a 92 teal z with 350 that is original. I have a current car to mess around with
$3,500 may not seem to bad but depending on your skill level and work space, it might take some $$ to fix her up. Chin spoiler needs repaint, remove superman sticker, fix rear deck lid, repaint rear deck lid and maybe spoiler, vac wash interior and repair seats/replace/or get covers. Plus tack on sales tax and what it costs to go get it and bring her home. Final cost could be $5,000 at that point. I think that we love these cars so much that we can picture what a car could look like that we sometimes look past the work involved.
It may be true that prior owner took good care of car and did a 350 swap the correct way. However in the short time the current owner had it, it looks like it was abused with how dirty the seats are. Not sure what happened that the rear spoiler needed to come off and the deck lid. Big thing for me is that I would have to verify that the block was a real 350 and properly swapped. Just not worth it. I think this car is worth $2,000. Is sad because it wouldn't take much to fix it up compared to other cars we see. I hope it doesn't get trashed by the eventual buyer.
