Re: 24 Hours of LeMons Build. 88 IROC
Want to thank you again for the brake parts you gave us at Sears Point, any help is greatly appreciated. Not counting tires we could have our car done for about $500.00 but money is just to tight right now. We have some guys that want to drive but don't want to help financially to finish the car, so we just keep trying!
One more thing, NO SNIVELING about having to much work, I would love to be up to my *** with work but its just not happening right now unfortunately, there's not much need for an equipment mech. when there's no construction going on- Owell.
Anyway good luck with your projects, it'll make getting back on the track that much sweeter.
If you need a hand I'm available. LOL!

I am familiar with the race and follow a member on a Geo Metro forum that also races in the 24 hour of lemons. I was wondering if the camaro in the pictures was someone on here. Looks like a lot of fun. I have a 91 bird and a 96 geo...love both cars(bird more).

Re: 24 Hours of LeMons Build. 88 IROC
Ridgid has sponsored us for the Buttonwillow true 24 hour race (11am-11am) in June with 1 30" and 3 pairs of different 6" and 3" set-ups. We have a lot of off-road racing connections and the word in these circles is they are great for UTVs due to the low amp draw. However, many claim the beam can be out run at 50 mph in the rough. Dealing with a desert course is much different than a street course so I am excited to see how they perform without the vertical fluctuations on the track.
Here they are: Ridgid sent me two 6", four of the 3" w/6 LEDs, And one 20". I mounted the four 3" and one 6" .

If you find yourself outrunning it, try high mounting. That would really help if you were right behind another car too.

Re: 24 Hours of LeMons Build. 88 IROC
hmm i was thinking you could get some old fender mount mirrors form a datsun and make a bracket to hold the 3's inside em and mount em backwards on the fenders facing forward ya know? also did ya ever rig up an engine sprayer to keep er cool? or any brake ducting, gotta say love the lemons cave wish like hell i had the money or time or means to be doing this myself, i love genius budget racing
or if you like the light setup so far, which is pretty killer, you could get some mesh screen at a hardware store and screw it into th grille to protect your expensive lights i wouldn't run with them exposed like that

We just finished the Button Willow 24 hour race... Holy cow that was nuts. 10am Sat to 10am sun. It's a trip seeing the sunset and rise again during a race.
It's time to ditch the auto trans. Who does the the best set-up for a t-5 complete kit?

Re: 24 Hours of LeMons Build. 88 IROC
It's crazy for sure. Out of the 4 races this car has raced we took the checkered flag in one (sonoma). We could have waited a few hours and finished the last laps at Button Willow but we didn't. We are getting closer and closer to a bullet proof car. Funny thing is at this last race we parked the last 3 hours and finished in front of 80+ cars. We also had 2 hours of pit stops during the race so basically 80+ cars had over 5 hours of time in the pits.

hmm i bet if you guys had run the whole time you'd have finished highly, have you won any awards yet? i.o.e? you've got one of the best looking cars going, also you ever thought about pulling the wiper washer actual sprayer and rigging it up to spray a little bit of fluid into the carb, washer fluid is methanol based so it could help cool engine temps....in my mind anyway, just an idea

This weekend we raced Thunderhill in Lemons with 180 cars. It was a passing rich enviroment. We also ran the 5th fastest lap out of all the cars. We did plan to run the Chump race at Willow Springs but they cancelled it. BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO CARS RACING.
Here is that lap.

LOL, I love this and everything about it. It should be a lot more fun to.drive with the four speed. That trans should be bullet proof. Straight cut gears FTW!

Re: 24 Hours of LeMons Build. 88 IROC
im curious say u guys blow up ur current engine and somone were to sell u a 3.1 or 3.4L v6 with a turbo kit on it for cheap would u be able to use it ???
knock about 150#'s off the nose and have around 250hp and 325ftls at the rear tires once u turn the boost down to make it live
though im sure it would live just fine with around 12psi and 300rwhp and about 400rwtq
main problem i would see is an air to air intercooler would heat soak really bad and that could cause issues without a means of controling the heat
the engine itself would take the abuse of the endurance racing though

well lemons you dont really have aerodynamics in play so much, run hood less? keep air moving over the engine at all times, develop a sprayer system (alot of pikes peak cars run them, actually just sprays the engine and all down with cold water with the flip of a switch, jesse james used on on the monster garage pikes peak blazer, good episode) if that'd help. money doesn't seem to be much of an issue with these guys they could always just buy a ton of bags of ice lol

if they could use such an engine combo i just might happen to know were they can pick one up cheap
without the turbo i wouldnt consider the engine alone as it would prolly be way underpowerd stock that even the increase in hhandling wouldnt make up for it
however i seen they dynoed the engine they are running and its 218 rwhp
a bone stock 2.8 with 7 psi would put down more then that and will deff survive the endurance aspect as far as i can tell
my 3.1 with nothing more then ported stock heads and a 260 cam put down 270rwhp and 370ftlbs @ 9psi with a messed up ignition system
detune that thing a lil bit and u would have the power to stay out front and not have to push the engine to hard
but like i said i dont even know if it would be a legal engine combo, im going to assume no power adders unless it was originally oem equiped

Re: 24 Hours of LeMons Build. 88 IROC
IROC Maiden in the lead for 2 hours at the beginning, Fish laid down a 2:11 lap and we finished... learning to fuel on pit road and a loose track arm bolt relegated us to 21st overall out of 120, F-Body Cup win (The race inside the race) and one hell of a time during the endurance race at Chuckwalla Raceway.
The driver line-up included Austin (FISH) (5 hours), Buster (3.5 hours), Nick (2.5 Hours) Mitch (1.5 Hours - Bicep surgry 2 weeks ago) and Me (2.0 Hours)
This was the first time in 7 races we didn't play country club D-bags and have a hotel and a shop or pull up to the gas pump at the track... Me and Nick had a blast hang'n with all other drivers and crews after the checkers! Cannon Ball!!!! Gawd 9 hours sleep, a 1/4 cord of wood and many gallons of booze later we all made it home safe.
Mods for this race was a 4 speed manual trans instead of the 4 speed auto. Started Sat with 4 fresh meats and replaced the rears Sun before the start. Still running the same brake pads from Sonoma.

As for RWHP We switched the TPI to a 670holley and power went to 230... Going from an Auto trans to the 4 speed made the RWHP 262.
It may not seem like much... But ask any of the racers at the track... This car is known as a beast and can stomp any car on demand. it's the endurance that levels the field and turns the tables upside down. We go through over 100 gallons of fuel.
Being a former IROC builder owner in the early 1990s I have developed tons of power and had an 11 second 1986..... I had to throw everything I knew out the window and build a boat motor. This car makes over 200ftlbs of TQ at 1500RPM... The TQ is so flat... There is no F-body that can last for 16 strait hours of beating the hell out of it like this one does now. We set the rev limiter at 5100RPM.
There is a guy who brought a 2006 GTO 6.0 6speed and got 1 Billion penalty laps... He got smoked.

the v6 engines were used in boat and midget racing these engines made 400+ hp spinning around 7-7,500 rpms and survived. if the v8 proves to only be reliabilty hindered one of the v6 engines may work out well for u guys
when turboed the tq curve is flat as can be on my dyno pulls the lowest tq was 342 peaked at 370 and back to 350 on top end
just an idea for u guys to toss around if u guys keep having engine issues

Re: 24 Hours of LeMons Build. 88 IROC
A little update from our last race weekend at Sonoma: Finished 3rd!!! 170 cars for the weekend.
Converted over to a Dry Break Fueling system and knocked minutes off our pit stops.
This is the highest finish ever for a Camaro in Lemons so far (Since 2006).
Raced 3 days only added 1 qt of oil...
Keep in mind when the shift light hits in 3rd gear that is 101mph.

Here was the 4th fastest lap of the weekend. 2:06.0 on a 2.53 mile course.
