86 z28 restoration project

So some of u guy may have seen my other thread i had project krzy z it was an 82 z28 camaro with some very bad rust problems in the floor and firewall. i been working on it here and there collecting parts for it and looking for a new shell to work with. I was talking to friend of mine who is fixing his camaro and bought an 86 z28 rolling shell but it was complete gfx the whole nine yards he stripped the car down to just the windshiled and t-tops, i asked him what he was doin with it and he said if i want it to come pick it up and happy birthday its a gift for me since he knew how bad my other car was. so i picked it up on july 3rd my bday and hauled it to my old mans place where i have my big shop i never get to use cause my dad always has something goin on, but now he broke his ankle its my chance to get in there lol. so here are a few pics of the car.

this car has no rust other than the lil bit on the floor from the water sitting there (rained the night before i picked it up) plans for this car is to swap everything from my 82z on this this car as u seen in the last pic i could help but put my bumper on it already. the car is in perfect stage for the body work which needs lil to none at all ill be painting it pearl white like it is now the engine bay will be white as well. im still back and forth about shaving the fire wall but i picked up a 4th gen firebird dash

ill be putting in the camaro along with matching door panles and center console, i have a few cavalier out back that are parts and i wa measuring the hvac unit behind the dash and it should fit behind the firebird dash the whole reason for this i still wanna have heat in the car for those cold cruz nights and the blower motor will be on the inside of the car, but we ll see how that turns on first.

things to go on the camaro
91-92 z28 rims
98 ss camaro ls1 brakes frt and back
3:73 posi diff with disk brakes
ls1 brake booster and master cylinder
5spd swap
97 350 vortec motor
lowering springs or coil overs?
Iroc bumper and gfx
Iroc hood

thats a start for now.

Re: 86 z28 restoration project

That looks like a very solid car to start with...much better than the '82. Good luck.

Re: 86 z28 restoration project

i didnt get a whole lot welded up due to my brother used the last of the welding wire on a truck box he is working on so i started to lay down some filler on the spot weld areas and started to smooth out what i can in the engine bay.

one thing i hate doin is laying down the filler, some batches dried to fast and man i made a mess of my brothers mixing board lol it also didnt help it was so hot in the shop we had both over head doors open and the back to door to let air movement in the shop, i think im goin to put and a/c unit in the window of the shop so i can work with out dying of heat. i never got around to sanding the filler cause it was late already and the kids were falling asleep ( good thing i live right across river from my partents place 5min ride lol) so i called it a night. im hoping to get some more work done on the car today plan is to have the enigne bay smoothed and painted by the weekend so i can start putting the motor and trans in car and get it moblie.

Re: 86 z28 restoration project

well got some work done on the camaro this week, not as much as i would like with only a few hours a day and moving the car in and out of the shop kind sucks but here are some pics.

i figured if i had some parts on the car and making it look like a car again that it would give me some motive to get some hard hours on the car. oh also i had upgrade my rear taillight wiring and bulbs, i didnt like the old style bulb design so i had some taillight wiring harness with bulb and connectors from 2010 SILVERADO when i was working at the dealer ship and modifed the tail light house to fit the connectors and work out perfect i never got any pics of it tho but those will be posted soon.

I don't see this as a restoration so it's being moved to appearance/Camaros.

Re: 86 z28 restoration project

sorry for the lack of update been pretty busy with work and family events, i started to strip down my doors i have for the camaro and one needs a lower door skin due to heavy rust and the other one needs the buttom lip welded back together, but i had found a pair of firebird doors forsale for 100 buck so ill be checking those out tomorrow afterwork and hope they are not as much work as the ones i have now. i finaly got the factory dash out which turns out to be junk cause its cracked and has holes so ill be putting the 4th gen dash in sooner than i thought, the engine bay is just about ready for the last skim of filler and than primer and paint, than itll be on to engine and transmission work i wanna get the car running and moving on its own power before i start the rest of the body work. change of plans for the transmission, ill be goin to a 700r4 instead of a 5 spd cause the guy i had trade parts for the 5 spd sold the car i was geting it from so i wasnt to happy about that. so trying to find a 2wd 700r4 is just as hard finding 5spd trans so ill be taking a 700r4 i have from my parts trucks and swapping it to a 2wd with a full rebuild, ill also ordering a umi torque arm relocation crossmember for this swap. ill have pics of the transmission rebuild as soon as my parts come in.

Re: 86 z28 restoration project

Because it's a modified car, so it's more of a resto-mod.

Then again, whitedevil's thread is an extreme resto-mod, yet that one hasn't been moved to Member's Firebirds, so go figure.

Re: 86 z28 restoration project

Well it's been awhile since I have done an update on the car, I finially found a front lower gfx for my z28 and iroc tail lights I also picked up a set of headers for the Camaro so things are slowly moving forward I had pull the oil plug out from my motor and wasnt happy about the weather that came pouring out of it so I pulled the pan and cleaned up the oil pump and just waiting on my gaskets to come in, I got another set of vortec heads to install on my motor that have been checked out by.a machine shop since my other heads. May have a crack in them haven't got them check out yet but if they are good ill rebuild them with bigger springs I'll be bring the car back into the shop and spray the engine bay so I can get the drive train done and over with pics to follow soon

Hey great project. What a job you have ahead of you but in the end, I'm sure you'll be proud of what you accomplished. Keep up the great work and keep us posted. Looking at your pics above and what you said about new tail lamps, here's what style tail lamps and rear hatch a 1986 Z28 should have.

Re: 86 z28 restoration project

Yup. You got the wrong hatch glass. You need the CHMSL (outside). 86 Z28 and the 86 IROC had the black stripes through the tail light lens. Berlinettas did not have the fine lines through the tail lights.

I know the hatch isn't the one for the year. It's off an 83 z28 which was my other Parts car that I stripped and scrapped I have the the iroc style tails in my shed now I pick up a week Or so ago along with my frt lower gfx just havnt put them on the car since its still outside under cover which will.be fun digging the snow around it since it was snowing all day today which is the most seen we had seen since it since it started to snow up hear. I did manage to get motor together just need to install the intake which I'm picking up tomorrow and some other items need for the car I have to upload the picks of the motor tomorrow since they are still on my iPhone very close to having it dropped into the car soon

my brother took the intake and had it powered coated silver for a better look havnt seen it yet but he said it turned out very nice so ill be checking it out tomorrow. also i think i may be needing a different hood for the car i dont think itll close with this intake unless i do something about the air cleaner. The car it self should be coming in the shop this weekend to have the engine bay painted and getting ready for the engine and trans to be installed.

Re: 86 z28 restoration project

well i there is a change in motor plans now, im selling off the vortec motor and goin to swap in a 6.0 ls motor. we have a over stock of these motors at my work and i picked up a motor complete for about 300 bucks, the motor has around 100ks but it ran fine and compressions is good, also i grabbed a second 6.0l core motor for another 100 bucks complete to that will be my spare motor. my boss said what ever i can find in the yard for my swap i can take, so i grabbed 2 pcm (0411) 2 truck engine harness from a 99 and 2002 2 maf sensors and a starter, so im off to a great start already. i gotta go threw the ware house to see what i can find for a 4l60e we list them in stock but dosent say if they are 2wd or not so that should be fun. i will be building my own harness well at least try to build one with the help of treads and site i have found. The plan for the 6.0 swap will be fairly stock with ls1 intake and upgraded cam and valve springs and work on putting a single turbo on the motor. im not after crazy hp number but ill be happy with at least 500hp lol. ill be ordering the engine mounts this week and getting the engine bay in the camaro ready this weekend for paint and start the body work on the rest of the car which i have 2 weeks to do starting friday.

i now have 2 complete engine harness and 1 engine harness that will be used for connectors if some are damaged with the other harness. Ill be ordering trans dapt mounts #4575 with the 1" setback for the swap cause I have been reading that i need the setback to run the stock length drive shaft and dont need to notch the k-member which im goin to do on my spare k-memeber to be on the safe side and until i can afford a spohn k-memeber later down the road. I also have my friend thats a parts manager at gm putting a list of gasket ill need to reseal the motor and prices on f-body oil pan and brackets for the p.s and alternator, ill be getting parts at cost. Now im off to my parents place to dig the camaro out of the snow and into the shop. pics to follow.

I had the brake booster and shock mounts cleaned up and painted as well, I got the new master cylinder install too, just waiting on the prop valve to be installed, i picked up a new steering shaft from work today from a astro van which will clean up the engine bay. Im not worried about the k-memeber not being painted cause my pair k-member will be getting notched and painted when im ready to drop the motor in for the finial time. Im goin to end up building my own ls swap mounts to save on cost which i can put into something else for the motor like an intake. Ill have picks and specs on the mount once i get more into the build. now that engine bay is painted i can start working on my doors and get those ready for paint.

Re: 86 z28 restoration project

Well not a whole lot got done on the car had to put the fenders back on the car and push it back out side cause my brother needed to use the hoist and my parents are back from there trip which means my dad needs his parking spot in the shop back lol. I put my t tops back on the car just to keep the tarp from falling into the car and turns out i have 2 different glass t tops one has a spacer around the shaft and the other dosnt so i guess ill be looking for another set of t-tops. Also now that i wont be able to make my own motor mouts till i get the car in the shop ill be ordering a set of swap mounts to get it done and over with. I have started working on my engine harness which im goin to try and use the truck fuse block to run my whole car and engine ill be redoin the wiring in the car also. Ill post pics of the work on the harness tomorrow. I also grab a few fuel pumps from work out of some trucks that had a 6.0 in them i figure i could make them work in my car to save cost on a performance pump which will be upgrade later on down the road when performance is upgraded on the motor.

i only have 2 hours into the harness and this is where im at with it. I removed all the unwanted wiring and i think i still have one or 2 connectors to remove from the harness but must of its all done. now i just need to figure out if im goin to use the truck fuse block or just build my own fuse block for the harness, im also planning on redoing the wiring in the car as well thats why I have the truck fuse block which i have all the connectors for to use. Also I have been looking on ls1tech site for parts for my swap and a template to build my own lsx mounts and i have found a template to build them from and its for 1" set back to.

this should keep me busy for a bit till i can get my car back into the shop again.

Re: 86 z28 restoration project

Update: engine harness is almost ready for extending and fuse block, I have some smaller fuse blockes I got from work that im goin to use to ran most of the body wiring from and the engine harness as well as a under hood relay box from a 2005 cavalier which has for fuel pump cooling fans and ecm powering fuse.
Now the bad I went over to my parents place to grab a few things from my camaro which I had pushed off to the side off the shop so it wasnt a Lot of trouble to bring it into the shop to work on, Well I guess it wasnt far enough out of the way for my dad when he was clean the snow last week some time He backed right In to the back of my camaro destroying my good spoiler and Breaking the driver side tail light which was the iroc tail lights I got a month or so before, I kinda had a feeling I should of left the old stuff on But I wanted to start clear out the inside of my car of junk I didnt want or need in the car. So my hunt is on for a center spolier with out the 3rd brake light and as for the light it the black area where a lic plate light gose that is broken, Im Pretty sure I can find a replacement for it But wont be easy. This saturday Ill start the body work on my doors and hopfully have them mounted on the car and lined up and get my frt fenders lined up, and at the end of the month Ill be picking up my new iroc hood for the car which is in mint shape and has brand new hood vents all for 100 bucks.

with the harness now all apart im goin to mock up the harness on the motor using the truck intake for now to run the wiring I also have some spare injectors for my old Tpi Motor I had from a few years back that ill use for the injector harness routing. Than I can figure out after where Im goin to Have the harness enter the car from. Im almost Thing to have it go In the car from right behind the Intake Or From where the heater motor Harness gose from Just to keep the wiring in the engine bay to a min.

Re: 86 z28 restoration project

I used gold brand filler I think lol and I cant remeber what the finishing filler was but ill check when I go over there this afternoon.
I guess I should do an upate also, started the body work on my pass side door while I wait for my engine parts to come in, I picked up an ls1 i take and injectors as well as a .500" lift cam nothing crazy just better than the stock 5.3 cam. Once that comes in i can start tearing into the engine and finish my harness. Im also rebuild my car harness since its a mess, also i should have the rest of the dash parts and door parts i need to finsih my t/a dash swap. With bluiding a gargae at my house my wife being prego with our 3rd child which is another girl and waiting for a call back at my constrution job I really get one day on the weekend to work on the car which sucks but at least im getting some work done on it. Pics to follow soon

Here are the wheels ill be running for now which need to be cleaned up, I got some center caps from work the one on the left is from a caddy which Im trying to figure out how to pull the center off and put a bowtie in there and the other is a venter van center cap which I only have 2 of but I may run the venter ones till I figure out the caddy ones. picking up another set of iroc tail lights this weekend to replace the busted ones on my car as well as a spoiler and a stock floor shifter for the car. brought home my 4l60e transmisson and turns out all it needs are some new clutches but Im goin to go threw the whole transmission and give it a overhaul with a performace kit. more Pics later this evening.

Both doors are ready to be mounted to the body of the car to finish blocking and lining up the body lines. not much left for the body some work on the pas fender saving the antenna off and fixing some dents. My cuzin is going to fix my frt gfx which has a tear in it and just need to sand down the frt bumper. I been thinking of 2 toning the car silver on top and white on the bottom still thinking about it. also my intake, injectors and cam should be in on friday looking forward to that so i can finish mocking up my wiring harness, also next pay day Ill be ording billet fuel rails and swap mount plates so i can get this motor in the car and build the trans crossmember for the 4l60e.
