Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
yeah, the move to a V8 is much more complicated than most people realize. Off the top of my head, here's the things that have to be changed
Fully equipped long block, down to every sensor
ECM
Tach
Wiring harness
Transmission
motor mounts
Springs
Here's what has to change from going to a 2.8 to a 3.4
Short block
yeah, it's a no brainer. Keep the V6, and if he ever wants a V8, buy a car that already has one

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
Actually, you need the complete engine, including intake/fuel delivery system, and the wiring and computer to go with it. Then youll most likely have to tweak some pins and wires here and there to get it working right. Unless converting to a carb during the swap, but then that requires modifying the wiring harness and other things.
Edit: for a v-8 swap, not the v6 upgrade (dont want you getting all confused.)

I'm shocked at the number of people that do a v6 to a v8 swap. For me, would have to have a cherished v6 car already, and have a wrecked iroc with a perfect TPI drivetrain fall into my lap before I would consider it

The only reason I swaped in a big *** v-8 is because i had the v-8 to begin with and got greedy for gofast

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
again iv got my 88 for my fast car but my 86 is my DD so i want a 6. also its gonna cost me about $450 for the swap. $89 plus tax for my new parts and fluids, then $350 for my engine, its only $50 more and i get to keep my old 2.8 engine so im gonna slap those spare 3.4 parts on my old 2.8 block when im done and stick it on craigslist for $300. iv already got my intake gaskets, my valve cover gaskets, and my EGR gaskets so thats out of the way.

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
just found one for $250 on craigslist. its got 88K on it and its coming from a 94 but the only thing that worrys me is that it comes with the tranny but its missing the right exhaust manifold and its sat for a year, he says he pulled it last year because he wanted a v8, hes 19 so could be true..he said it doesnt knock or leak or make any noises and that its a good engine. should i trust it?

for $250 and a rebuild planned already it sounds like a good deal. just check the block over really well for even the tiniest crack....

im gonna do that but im more worried about burning oil, rods knocking, ect. atleast the junkyard engine has warrenties so this has me alittle scared..i just dont wanna put this money out and get screwed over...being 16 and getting this kind of money and putting it out is hard enough...

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
id go the full on rebuild route and pull the crank and pistons and put new bearings all around. that way you can check out EVERYTHING from the engine and have it professionally checked for extra peace of mind.
new rings too...

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
when it comes to DD, you want reliability and peace of mind that that engine will work whenever you need it to, day in and day out. theres nothing that says you cant get the block and save up to get it checked out. youre engine runs fine now aside from the possible piston slap. so its not like you cant drive the car till you get everything together

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
well i got my front license plate bolts, wiper arms, and my antenna spray painted today, they look alot better, nice and glossy black again :] i took them to my wirewheel and took them down to metal then used a sand block to rough up the metal alittle then sprayed them. look good. i took the front license plate bracket off today and i LOVE the look without it...but maaco didnt paint under it so you can tell the old paint from the new paint....... im gonna wax and buff that area and see if it cant shine up alittle cause without that bracket, the car looked more sporty.

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
well small thing just to bumb up the thread. i cleaned the interior up today and cleaned up my wires in the hatch for my system. i went over all the plastics with armorall wipes, vacumed the carpets, seats, sailpanels, door panels, anything that had carpet lol. biggest thing i did was that i cleaned my headliner. since my cloth is gone i just have that old board up there and as some of you know. when your windows are down or you shut your door hard. you get some of the old fiberglass resin to fall off and it gets everywhere! the little dust particials hurt the eyes after awhile so while i was vacuming i decided to do the board aswell and got all the little dust stuff off. looks alot better and now i dont have to worry about all that crap getting in my hair and in my eyes. im happy. ill post some pictures up of my hatch in a minute, jsut be reminded that i took this before i cleaned the carpet so its still alittle dirty!!

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
found me an engine, its out of a 93 s10, i get the s10 tomorrow and i start the dissassembely, saterday im pulling it down to my buddys since my garage is too low for the cherry picker he said i can use his so im dragging the s10 down, pulling the engine, painting it, driving my car down after we pull the s10s engine and pushing the truck out of the garage then im starting on mine after i paint the s10s engine, im going with a chevy red-orange for the block, black on the exhaust manifolds and y pipe and im gonna clean up my engine bay alittle bit, then dropping the egine in and driving away with a fresh engine

if you paint the exhaust, use some vht header paint and cure it in an oven so it wont flake off.

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
Thats the vht (very high temp) paint, for it to be able to withstand those temps it has to be cured. which invlolves baking at different temps getting hotter and hotter till you get to like 600 degrees. If you dont do that, it will just flake off in a few months. i didnt cure mine and the headers look like crap now.

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
or you can use the engine to bake them on the car. you just need an infared thermometer. Warm up the engine to the temp needed for that cure cycle then let it cool and warm it up to the next level. The temps needed to cure are on the can.

Looks like its coming along for sure, I can't blame you for popping another 2.8 in there. If I were you I'd keep the old heads off the other motor and port and polish them some, if you ruin them oh well, if you get all the way through them without ruining them then you might be able to turn out better hp numbers. As for the trans line I would use a compression fitting to fix it, although someone else might have a better idea.

Looking good so far. Atleast all the "mistakes" youve made have been minor and easy to fix. Now don't go dropping the engine on your head, thats not so easy to fix.
And I read the curing instructions on my can of VHT. It has instructions for curing the paint on the vehicle. You use the engine exhaust to heat up the pipes instead of an oven, go figure.
