New Car 88 Iroc

I just picked up a solid 1988 Iroc rolling chassis for a deal. What do you guys think? What would you guys do motor and trans options?

Came with built 700r4, was originally a 350 TPI car, 10 bolt 4:11 spool

Re: New Car 88 Iroc

wow she looks pretty nice, what condition is she? maybe make her a # correct car and fix her up inside out and watch her value GROOOWWW!
otherwise the options and un limited, what are your plans? maybe for a daily driver someday, an ls1 would be nice or a 350/383 tpi.

I say drop a honda civic 4 cylinder into it, and get a sweet geo metro tranny. lol jk.

I say go with matching #'s drop whatever was stock. Good looking car man. What'd it cost?

Car: Had 2 iroc-z's . An '87 & '88.
Engine: HAD 5.0 & 5.7 tpi
Transmission: 700r4
Axle/Gears: stock
Re: New Car 88 Iroc

Wow, great looking car. congrats! theres a lot of options on what motor to run and basically its up to your preference. going with a stock t.p.i would be cool and keep it original. or you can hop that 350 t.p.i to a 383 stroker.
Personally im torn between puttin a stock tpi 350 in or go for a ls1 w/auto swap.

good luck!

Re: New Car 88 Iroc

Well I actually have an 84z that was a carb 305 5 speed I might through in to get it running, but I have a built 468 bbc aswell. I picked it up for $500. I got the interior gutted cause the carpet had a bunch of rat droppings due to the car sitting for 2 years. The wiring harness is hacked up cause the previous owner put a carbed engine in, and also did a push start ignition. Car has 84,000 miles. Just searching for ideas.

How are you going to have an all numbers matching car with the original engine missing?

Re: New Car 88 Iroc

13 Years. 13 years ago I picked up this deal of an IROC. I was working on it, and making good progress, meanwhile going to school for engineering. Since, I've graduated, have a career and started a family. To make a long story short, 13 years ago, my brother and I got into a fight. The car was being stored at his shop. He proceeded to sand all the paint off then shoved it outside, where it's sat for 13 years. I will soon be bringing this car home, to...well see what I can do with it. Yes, i know what most of the comments will be...scrap it. I honestly have nothing but time to lose. Im hoping to bring some life back into my car.

Looks like he sold a few parts from it. Shame either way.
Is that rear wheel well rusted off?

Negative. When I was last working on it, I was about 1/2 way finished with a mini tub project.

Do I see the start of a fuel trap door?

By the looks of it your brother must have been pretty angry, but that is nothing compared to what you will get from the purists over that trap door. Prepare for death threats and house getting egged.

Haha This made me chuckle. Yup, I started a trap door. I know all about the trap door debate. I have a 2002 WS6 who is still a virgin.

Man, I hate to say it but I think it's a total loss. Whether you have the time and the $$$ it looks like there are so many original parts gone that sourcing all those could be a real challenge. Shame your brother chose this as his way to get you.

I've had my moments of thinking the same. Luckily I still have the rest of the parts... doors, hood, bumpers, fenders, interior etc. My dad was nice enough to take all of these parts and put them in storage.

Cut hole to install trap door, get flamed. Cut holes in OEM composite 1982 hood to install louvers, get accolades.

Haha such a true statement. Honestly people can roast me on the trap door all they want. I mean... look at the rest of the car anyway. I'm just hoping to give this car a new life. Possibly finish it as a race car.

Re: New Car 88 Iroc

I think a lot of people take sides on the trap door issue without really knowing where it all started. Back before the current upswing in thirdgen values, back when there were just a few of us keeping the thirdgen world going, folks would have a bone stock thirdgen, in great shape, and have the fuel pump go out. Very common occurrence. Then out of laziness and ignorance, cut a hole in an otherwise perfect car. NOW.....values are going up and popularity is booming, especially on STOCK cars, and those folks are finding out what that trap door did to their value. THAT is what drives the hatred for the trap door. ....if you have a modified car, race car, LS swap, restomod.....by all means, cut the trap door.

That almost explains exactly what my project is. I picked this car up 13 years ago for $500. I always wanted a race car, so that's what I decided to turn it into then. If I could turn back time, and the paint/body was still in the same condition as it was when I bought it, I would consider restoring it. Today, my desire for a race car is still there. I feel this car...NOW would be a good candidate. I already have some performance parts stashed away just for this build. I hope to regenerate this thread back into a build thread again, and document my experience here.

Re: New Car 88 Iroc

Since you have most of the parts, i say go for it. Anything you do to that car now could only be an improvement.

Build thread totally derailed by a trap door in a damn near scrap shell... Now no matter how amazing this car is when its finished it wont be worth a damn because it has a trap door
