Re: Project Rustbucket.

Yea I love yards that are here, My family is into them as well, well mainly my uncles and my Father, they always go to their friends yards and report to me if they see anything that might interest me. There was actually another dash pad in one of his friends small yards from a 89 that he yanked the tbi system from. He said it was perfect but was faded and Panchito as we call him wanted me to grab it before the car was put into the back lot and sent to the bigger yard. I passed since I was busy and the car was shipped to Indiana.

Also keep up the work on your 82. Looking forward to see your progress! I might finally get mine in paint this month, just waiting for an estimate on paint from a neighbor. Already got everything setup to spray it.

Re: Project Rustbucket.

I really need to stop going to Junkyards, at this rate, the Cam will never be painted but If I keep scoring like today, I am fine with that.

I went to a local yard to find a 91. Besides it being scrapped for metal parts, it was still intact, it was the 91 I got my original radio from. Originally I was going back to get the t-tops since I do not recall if it was but I was ready to buy them, and One thing I always forget to check is the dash pad, and there it was, perfect besides missing the side vents, no punctured speaker grills, no cracks, nothing.

I took it off, and went to the cashier, I know another yard that I got to charges $10.95, So I figured it would be around 20 bucks there and it was! I already bought one recently but this one is better than the one I bought, the one I have atm has the middle of the speaker grill poked in but its only 2 rows and not evne noticeable but still, for 20 bucks, why not.

Anyways some pictures of the dirty thing and receipt picture.

Re: Project Rustbucket.

Yea its about 20 mins from me, Its rare when they have parts there, but they did. There is an 89 and 91 here, the 89 is already stripped to hell. The one in Hammond had 3 91-92s and a few others a Trans am as well, nothing special there though.

Yea I see it from their website, an 82, 89 and 92. I am just looking for some minor interior things now, 91-92 Shifter plate and radio bezel. I think they are available in the yard that is 10 mins from me.

Thanks, I was actually thinking of trading the hood off for 91-92 original wheels, but decided against it and bought the wheels locally. Just need tires before they get mounted and the C5's get the basement treatment for a future project. Also what would be the widest tire the wheels can fit? I know they came 235/55/16. Would 245/55/16 be ok? Just gotta know before I go out and get them tired up. They are the 16x8's.

Anyways besides that, I installed the dash and gave it a cleaning. Looks good.

Man you always get the good stuff!

I really like that dash you have, I've never had a 90-92 (although I have a whole dash in my garage)

Re: Project Rustbucket.

Haha, I am very patient, I might bug some people on here and ask for prices and then realize to wait and waiting pays off. I actually just picked up a 91-92 Shifter plate for the Cam in awesome condition, no corners broken and the yellow letters are almost new and no fading to them. I have a T5 boot plate but I stored it for now.

Yea, I like it too thats why I went gaga for the stock radio since I want a stock look for my interior. I had an aftermarket headunit, aftermarket steering wheel, gauge overlays, seat covers, etc. I yanked it all out and went stock and love it. Gave my seats a good cleaning and their spotless.

I will also keep an eye out for you for the parts, I am actually going to another yard in a few after I finish eating. That will conclude my weekly runs.

Well if you find anything I can use please let me know.

I found a jy locally with a ton of third gens and at least 4 good dash pads and good fenders I could use...

Problem is, they charge what they know they're worth. They want $125 per pad, and $100 per fender.

I recently found out you can order NEW dash pads from this place:
http://www.millsupply.com
They charge about $97-$98 + shipping. Best of all, they are NEW...
I have not seen them in person (nor do I need one, but I was checking their stuff out for another porject and found this by accident).

I hate my family, Lost internet due to them not wanting to use a phone card to do outside us calls and now I have to wait until they pay the $600 when they recconect the internet, I am on my fathers friends laptop/clear setup he loaned me. Feels good to be back online.

As for that bad yard, yea those yards I avoid, as for a update, nothing yet. No dash pads, blisters, or anything good. Only thing I have recently purchased was the driver side 91-92 door ground effect for $10. The camaros that I saw had a few decent fenders, they go for about $35 there, its the lkq yard blue island yard was where it was since I visited today, there was even a decent front chin spoiler that a quick fiberlgass job can fix. I will let you know if anything comes up. I am also looking for things for a friend that recently purchased a 89 gta/ta.

Also what do you think, keep the C5 wheels or replace em with the original 91-92 wheels? Denny has given me a price of $160 for all 4, but I like my C5 wheels, I think they will be great if I re-do them. I already got a tire to replace the really bald rear tire which is a 275/35/18 vs the 245/40/18 it had before, I am already $190 into the wheels, since the replacement tire was $50 (Goodyear Eagle F1) and getting the passenger side front wheel and tire which was $140. I am thinking of just keeping them but I love the 91-92 wheels.

So confused on what to do. I was originally planning to keep the C5 wheels and spend the money on a rear diff upgrade but the rear I was looking at which was a 3.23 rear disk posi is sold.

Re: Project Rustbucket.

Well I decided against 91-92 wheels, just too much $ for em. I might just start collecting each one at a time for a set if I ever decide to go to them, which is perfect since I can get 3 for under $75 but that will wait til the weekend if their even still there, but I purchased something awesome today.

Picked up this http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/pts/1914943957.html

Its a borg warner 9 bolt, ad says its 3.27 but isn't that 10 bolt gears? It came off a 89 GTA 350/700R4.

Also, it spins both wheels in the same direction, but holding one disk and putting enough force will allow you to spin a single end. Shouln't be the other way around meaning both spin in the same direction and wont spin one alone?

Yea did some research after I posted, I am happy its a 9 bolt, I was originally thinking it was a 10 bolt until I went to go see it.

Anyways here are some pictures of the rear end that might go in tomorrow and how the Cam sits at the moment, I decided to give the door another pass and came out better and fixed some small issues that bothered me. As for the hood repaint, I was testing out my spray guns and I am very happy. At the guns atleast not the $50 I wasted on the 2 quarts of Primer from Rustoleum Autozone carrys, shitty *** primer, I needed 2 quarts to cover the hood to my liking and yes the gun was dialed in. Ohh well leason learned.

I was wondering where you went! I thought I might have bugged you until you didn't wanna come back lol.

Well keep a look out, if you find any nice doors off a camaro or firebird let me know, and I need fenders for a firebird still.

I decided to sell my T-top Camaro and keep my hardtop and my ttop Trans Am.

Good to see you're still finding deals, though.

Nice find on the rear end! Now quick question, I'm looking to get a different one for my car and I was just wondering which is the better choice, 9 or 10 bolt? I dunno what the difference is. Thanks! Sorry if I'm thread jacking!

I installed a 9-bolt into my camaro, and I have been told the only real noticeable difference is that the 9-bolt is a little stronger than a 10-bolt, and there are 9-bolts instead of 10, lol. Also, 9-bolt internals are harder to find/more expensive than 10-bolt internals.

I like mine.

Re: Project Rustbucket.

I was also told that, my father was pleased with the purchase as well and well he thinks I am kinda dumb for it since the car fish tails even now with the open 2.77 10 bolt, that might of been due to the fact of the worn rear tire, but I plan to test it out this weekend when hopefully shes in. Today I have started and all thats left is shocks, torque arm and lower control arms and she should drop out of there.

The main reason I bought it was due to the fact its a disk 3.23 rear end, the 9 bolt and posi was really nice, the fellow who sold it to me was also very friendly and looks like he knows what hes doing. The motor of the t/a that it was removed from was there too, looked like a clean motor.

Also what do you guys reccomend for the rusted rear brakes? The pictures of the ad shows them good but they seem to have rusted in the days of it being posted, Should a simple grinding or having them turned fix it? Also are the prices on
Autozone/Oreilly correct? $99 for each rear rotor? :O

They always rust like that if you leave them out for a day or 2, even if your car is parked. It'll all come off when you use your brakes for the first time

Alright hope so.

I am kinda stuck though, all that is left is removing the lower control arms and well one side has the nut out and the other wont budge. One side even with the right socket it started socket started washing out the patern, I might just cut the ****ers off and be done with it but I have no clue if I can even get the locally and I will probably not have internet after today again. God I hate bonded bolts and bushings.

You could just cut the head of the retarded bolt off and then take your good bolt and nut to your local napa and have them give you a new bolt.

They carry alot of bolts there? Might try it if the bolts on the 9 bolt dont come out right. The bolts on the 10 bolt did not come out without a fight. What I did was cut the head and tail of the bolt, and grind it down as much as I can and bend the bracket enough for the control arm to slip out and tada. Took an hour which was good, so took a afternoon to take the old rear out, not bad. Anyways some pictures.

Well the one here in my town does, I don't know about Indy. I'm glad you got it sorted out, though. I'll bet you'll like it. And if you painted it first then went and did a million upgrades you'd probably scratch up the new shiny paint, so always wait to do that last!

Yes sir and getting it painted is gonna probably have to wait til next year at this rate. I did not do much today besides spend time with the family. The only thing I did was take off the brake line which needs to be replaced for the rear which is the rubber line from the caliper to the bracket/lock then the metal line to the T fitting. Should pick this up tomorrow. I also plan to give the rear a pass with the rust stripper wheel and probably give it a coat of Vht high heat paint or something in glossy black that wont come off.

Another thing I got as a freebie is a pair of hedman long tube headers. They look in good shape but they were given to my friend when he purchased his 1989 T/A and he decided to give them to me since I plan to help him with the body work. Here are some pictures of it:

The PO did a horrible job on the body work and paint job, I told him we will probably end up taking every panel off and starting over and getting it back as straight as possible to be in the good zone for filler. He purchased it for $2000 but I told him to offer $1800 but he said he is fine with $2000. I feel to be honest its worth $1600-$1800. The PO said it was swapped to a 350 which is from a Corvette. . I will pull the valve cover and see what it is this weekend. He also removed the A/C and Air system in a eh way. I drove it back to my friends house and for being a stock 305 or 350 (Who knows yet ) besides TPS issues at cold start, it ran fine. Body looks solid undernearth and does not look to have much rust.

One thing that makes me wonder is that, well its a 1989 T/A GTA and has a drum rear and was originally a 305 from what the PO says. It has 111k~ miles too and yet it makes my 155k 92 look like a garaged 3rd gen.

Besides that, We plan to hit a few Junkyards tomorrow and I might try to grab some t-top weatherstripping since my recently purchased stripping was not really installed properly. Yea first time, ****ed up. Wasted $120 bucks. .

Re: Project Rustbucket.

The T/A is a wiring mess. Jesus we spent all Sunday just cleaning and rewiring the fans back. Today my friend woke up late and we did nothing since he leaves for UTI at 12pm. We will probably get the car running again tomorrow morning. I also have to tackle his wrap around wing. Its cracked very bad. Lets see how good my skills with fiberglass are.

I also got around to ordering some parts. I ordered Founders performance Lower control arms and mounting hardware from UMI. Picked up a pair of KYB GR2 rear shocks and ordered some header gaskets and bolts for my Hedman 68460 headers that are going in after rear end goes in.

The rear shocks are called CarQuest Premium plus. God who knows how long they have been there but they sure are rusty. One thing is I never really mind how my Camaro rode. Compared to my friends 89 T/A GTA, its in another league against the T/A but then again tires make a huge difference. Anyways enjoy the pictures. I will report back when the things get here and are installed.

See thats the only reason I'm selling my T-top maro. When I drive it it shakes and rattles me to death and I'm just tired of it. The Trans Am has the WS6 suspension package and I can't believe how well it rides, not a shake or rattle in her

Never gonna sell mine. My next upgrades are SFC's and seeing what that does.

Anyways, Gotta love my neighbors for having unprotected wifi.

As for updates, Founders Performance control arms came in today and very impressed, KYB shocks are coming in this thursday. Then hopefully the rear should be in by friday. Then the fun times begin on the weekend when the hedman long tubes go in.

As for an update on the T/A of my friends, he got very lucky and an unsurprising find at a local small yard. A 91/92 Trans am 350/700R4 with a ''12''in rotor rear end. I passed on the tpi system w/o wiring for $40 for now. Don't feel like swapping over to tpi yet. My friend was interested in the rear and was priced at $150 but passed for now, he picked up the 140mph cluster and headlight motor for $30. They also had a early 4th gen firebird with an LT1/Auto and disk rear as well. I will see it again this weekend.

Yeah I can understand that. But mine just shakes so bad and I don't understand why. The dash even shakes. I've had a million offers for it off craigslist and some people are apparently give some pretty nice stuff for a T-top Camaro.

But I am still looking for those parts I was telling you about for my hard top maro and for my Trans Am.

Anyways some pictures to show what I did today besides spend 6 hours to just buy the things I said earlier.

Yea the style of the rim is nothing special but just the beefyness of the tire makes it look soo good.

What wheels are those? And awesome work on the Camaro!

I really liked how mine drove, it did have the rattles but nothing serious and only when going into bad potholes that I am too lazy to avoid sometimes.

As for the Junkyard T/A, both doors were dinged up which what looks like random people hitting the car. As for fenders, I know driver was dented too but did not recall anything bad with the passenger.

I actually went back today to pickup a starter for a 90~ Corrolla and saw the bird again. The yard really does not care for small things, while my father was talking to the owner of the yard I went and grabbed the prop valve and I got it for free since the owner did not feel like walking to the office to charge me $5 for it. . I was gonna purchase it from Flynbye and recalled the bird had 4 wheel disc brakes and went to take it off. Saved some good $.

@RD They are C5 wheels. Gonna replace them with 91-92 originals soon.

I plan to keep engine upgrades last. I am looking to beef up the suspension for now. After suspension work is done, I will look into beefing up my 350. I might even swap over to a LT1 if a good deal comes up, the 4th gen white Firebird is gone at the local yard. Apperently it got bought as a whole for $550.

Anyways, Rear is going in tomorrow and then Hedman longtubes going in this weekend. Hopefully everything goes good.

Re: Project Rustbucket.

Sorry for no updates in a while but been busy and having no constant internet does not help.

Anyways, the Camaro's rear upgrade is done. Its installed and man does it look good to have the PBR 12' brakes and it fills in the C5 18's pretty well. Makes the front look eh but having drilled/slotted rotors up front kinda take the heat away from it. The rear is basically upgraded hardcore. It got Founders performance Lower control arms and panhard bar. New Kyb GR2's. Sway bar upgraded to a T/A GTA with new bushings and links. Perfect I already know the rear is gonna feel soo much better when she comes out to stretch her legs. Forgot to say but the rear is a 88k mile 9 bolt Posi 3:27 gears and has PBR brakes.

Besides the rear, I have done some work on the engine. I swapped out the Edelbrock TES shortys with the muffler shop horror Y pipe (Y pipe went straight into the trash) and Installed the Hedman 68460's. Very easy install, guess I got lucky. I also did a full A.I.R remove and A/C. All that is left is purchasing a A/C Delete box and engine bay is done. It looks so clean. All that would be left to set it off would be some Aftermarket valve covers. I am really deciding on keeping the L05 or swapping again but this time to a LT1. I can probably get a full engine with harness and every sensor for $750-800 and have a decent drivetrain and spend my rest of my money on suspension upgrades. I have a T5 that probably got damaged in the floods last september since our basement got 4ft of water and it got submerged. I might gift it to my friend that owns the T/A. I doubt it he will want to go manual though.

Anyways, the Camaro is basically just missing, Exhaust and the brake line that runs from the Prop valve to the rear then goes to the rubber hose then axle lines, etc. Its my next purchase and is $75 from Classicindustries which is also the stainless version, regular line is $50. Once that is set, just a simple prop valve upgrade and she is set and road worthy somewhat. I also have been thinking about upgrading the front brake system. I plan to purchase the original 91-92 wheels. I figured the best upgrade would be LS1 since anything bigger probably wont work with the 16' wheels.

I will try and update when I can. Right now I am helping my friend get his T/A running decently. He dropped it off for the week and I basically rebuilt the whole Tpi top. Even did a small polishing job on it. Kinda makes me find a Speed Density tpi 350 and swap from tbi to tpi. If I find another one and I don't let it slip like last time, then I might pull the trigger.

Re: Project Rustbucket.

Wow the brake line from Classic industries is $70 and shipping is nearly $60.

I might have to do something here cause to me, when the shipping is as much as the part, there is something wrong.

Edit: There we go, Fine lines has it for $90 shipped. Shipping is $15. Ordered and hopefully gets here next week. I want to drive the car with the new rear before snow comes.

You are awsome Chrome! I called and they have it stock, I plan to pick up the line in a few days or weeks. I cancelled my order with Fineline because of it. I scored something huge today, my uncle says you should of seen my eyes when I saw them. I found a Craigslist ad without a picture which I hardly look at and plainly said He had 16x8 wheels from his 91 RS for sale for $100. Yes $100, I figured they needed some work and after a call he confirmed it but for $100, I am willing to spend the time to work on em. When I got there, wow, they are in awesome condition. Most of the ones I see for sale or locally are nothing like them, they are greyish with no shine at all. These are perfect, besides some fading on the red painted area, they are amazing. I couldn't get the $100 out of my pocket fast enough.

Check the attachment for the picture from my fathers crappy phone and in shitty light, but trust me, they are amazing. I plan to wrap them in 245/50/16's Goodyear F1's. I can't wait to see how amazing they make the PBR rear look.

Also, what Torque arm do you guys recommend for an upgrade? I was looking at Spohns, Any other company that makes a good yet inexpensive arm upgrade?

Re: Project Rustbucket.

Damm this thing is getting negleted. Pretty much its been sitting in the garage covered while I get some money together. I have been getting rid of some extra parts I had laying around and going to local yards to find anything worth buying/reselling for a profit. A 91/92 Formula came in to a local yard that a good friend of my fathers works at and I scored a whole TPI top setup for $55, Yes $55 for Base, Runners, Plenum, Throttle body, Sensors, Throttle cable & ECM with connectors to do a pin crossover. I still have not yet decided if I should swap it in or sell it, I called a local transmission shop where my father and neighbor brought their vehicles in the past and they quoted me $290 to disassemble and inspect my T5 to see what is needed or if anything is damaged but I still need a few things to get like pedals, bellhousing to do the swap. I ordered my exhaust parts to finish my exhaust. I went with a setup that has been on the forums for a bit, its basically Hedman 68460's to Hedmans S bends to Summit H pipe to Summit Glasspacks. Hopefully clearance is good but seeing all the crappy hondas that look like they have 1-2' of clearance I am sure I will be fine. I have around 6 1/2 inches of clearance from my Hedmans collectors.

The TPI was traded. Well if you check my other thread on me doing the Cam swap well it ended up badly by a mistake of not removing the lifters completely. I basically just raised them enough to clear the cam and that ended up with them sinking in and getting stuck. Then leaded to me trying to get em to drop into the oil pan since one did so by itself. Once again bad idea, I guess I used too much force and chipped off a decent chunk off the lifter hole edge that is faced towards the ''spider'' lifter retainer.

After alot of thought and seeing my choices, I decided I am going LT1. At first it was basically getting a L05 and slapping on my modified TBI top I had on my L03, then maybe getting the 193's ported and tuning it. Then it was about a L98 but $ is not worth it. A good L98 around 100k~ miles can not be found cheap. Most I have seen average $800 asking price. I can pickup a darn good LT1 for that price. Then it was LSX, I know it would be worth it to save for it since I am aware on what power they make with just a cam swap, but that will probably require me to spend $1200-$1800 for a decent engine, replacing my 700R4 would be necessary and my sbc parts will need to go. With the LT1 I can re-use my week old purchased exhaust system and my 68460s and keep my 700R4 for a bit with the help of a 1993 TB.

Right now I am still seeing my options on a LT1. A friend who sold me my 9 bolt and a few other small things had a LT1 posted from a 1997 T/A. Waiting on him to repost it to see if its still available. I should call/text but $ is tight and I am going job hunting this week. Still a good 80k-110k mileage LT1 can be found for around $400-600 easily so no worries.

The 700R4 is gonna be replaced, not now but it will when a good deal comes up. I want to go T56, always wanted to go manual and now seems like the best time to do it if I am doing the LT1 swap. I also plan to beef up the 9 bolt, I have been looking at 9bolts.com's 4:11 gear set, but that would end up with trying to hunt someone I can trust to do that for me.

I am wanting to go with Lloyd Elliott to build up the LT1. I have been looking at his choices and the LE2 head work with his 230/234 cam. Seems like a good way to go.

We shall see, Thats what I would love to do but it might just end up being a bolt on LT1/700R4/3.27 for a while. Should be a fun car even that way.

As for the current status, The L03 is loose and ready to be removed. My neighbor says he knows a work friend that can loan him the engine hoist and my father says he had it in his garage a few months ago. So I am hoping he comes through. I will be removing it and buying a stand for the L03. I will rebuild it as a spare motor or to keep for parts for my fathers 89 Caprice Classic. I cant wait to clean up the engine bay, it needs it. I should also be pulling the harness and organizing it and boxing it for the swap if anything would be needed for it.

Re: Project Rustbucket.

I have a quick question about the paint used to tint your tail lights, I am looking to do the same with mine and your's looks a hell of alot better than that aftermarket film crap. What kind of the VHT paint and clear coat did you use? Here is a tip I learned from Monster Garage about a "cheap" and effective rust remover, you need a battery charger, rubbermaid tote, Baking soap, and water. You use around a cup of soap for every 3 liters of water, get a rod and connect the ground to it and the positive to the part your trying to clean. I figured you might like this concept instead of busting your knuckles on the smaller stuff.

I purchased the VHT/Clearcoat combo from Amazon. Its called VHT Nightshade and Regular clear. I saw them at a local Oreillys that sells spray paint. Saw it under the caliper paint kits.

I just tried my best to lay the clear perfect and got a decent shine. I stopped there and they looked good. I plan to purchase another set and redo it and sand and polish them to make them pop even more.

Alot has happened to the car lately. I got my rear 91-92 16's mounted. Got 235/55/16s Goodyear Eagles. I put them in the back for now but plan to put them in the front and have the rears with Et streets. Wheels are spotless they still shine like new and are not dulled and sunfaded like most of the ones I see around here. I picked up the wheels for $100 and what a deal I got. No rash, no scratches besides the usual center cap scratches from PO's trying to take em off. I wish I can post pictures but no Camera anymore.

As far as the car, The L03 is getting pulled this week. Got a tough cold so not doing much soon. I got the LT1 on the engine stand and I am checking it over and everything looks perfect. I see I made the right choice with going with this engine since its very clean. Its out of a 97 Trans Am. 78k miles and I picked it up for $625 with harn and PCM. Supposedly it was tuned as well. Who knows.

It should be in by this weekend. I will start working on the harness while my cold goes away.

Re: Project Rustbucket.

So got the lt1 in and it fit like a glove. Didn't install the trans since I'm waiting on a corvette servo from dana from pro built and its been a week since my payment was sent. Should of atleast have gotten a email saying it might take a bit longer to ship.

Anyways my ignition parts came in today. Picked up a accel cap and rotor kit. Accel 9000 wires and ac delco rapidfire plugs. Should get most of the front acc on tomorrow.

Re: Project Rustbucket.

Haha why did you end up selling it? Seemed like a good final result. I would go t56 too but I am not wanting to spend over a grand to do so.

I hope to get her fired up early jan. I am sending my pcm to get vats and emissions tuned out so all that wouldbe left would be finding the parts to make the 700r4 work fine.

Today was a good day my ignition parts came in. Accel cap and rotor. Accel 900 wires and Ac delco rapidfire plugs. Gonna order a coil in the next few weeks. The corvette servo came in today too. How ironic its when I complain that it comes.

Also what is the size of the socket needed to remove the optispark cap? I heard e5 and e4. Which one is it.

Re: Project Rustbucket.

Yes sir I am. I have a few family friends who have owned a lt1 vehicle. One a impala ss and another a z28. Both never had problems with it in the 12 combined years they owned the cars. I shall see if I run into opti problems. Good reason to upgrade to msds opti. Still cheaper than swapping to a coil over shystem or going dizzy.

Re: Project Rustbucket.

I don't doubt that at all, as long as you don't drive through deep puddles (I don't think you will be lol) and keep an eye on the condition of the water pump you should be fine.

Quick Reply: Project Rustbucket.
