Camaro Painted!!
Well i finally got her painted. only painted the front half though, the rear half was in good shape, but the front nose cone both fenders and the driver side door was really messed up. The paint job (for me) was free. my grandfather restores old cars and he had some extra (a quart) of red laying around, we went to see if it would match the old color and it matched it to the TEE. you couldnt buy paint to match this close.
as you will see, i took the trim off the driver door when we painted, but couldnt take it off the passenger door since we didnt paint it. i was going to pull the trim off until i realized that the car has been painted before so the color under the trim was a darker red. i also shaved the antenna and put it under the dash.
anyway we did all our own work. Base coat/Clear coat. 2 coats of primer then wet sand then a last coat of primer and last wet sand. then pulled it in the garage and layed down 3 coats of red, then 4 coats of clear. then the next morning we wet sanded with 1200 then 1500 and then buffed it out. the pictures dont do the paint job justice. it looks absolutely amazing.
Now before you say anything we DID and still do have enough paint to do the rear half and after doing the front we prolly will do the rear half, but if you seen his car before it was painted then you would def agree that the fenders and nose needed painted before the back half was. and please dont comment on how crappy the hood looks, ill be gettin a new hood when money is right.
thanks for looking and tell me what you think!
these is before i started sanding. fenders were scratched to hell and nose had gashes in it and a few dents you can see where the ears of the hood smashed into the fenders when the hood flew up. *that was my fault..oops*
be patient im uploading lots of pics. comp is slow so it may take a little bit.

Then when i got it to my granpdas we started taking everything apart and started sanding some more with 80 grit. we used an air sander that rand off a compressor. most compressors wont keep up with the sander. but he has a quick recovery compressor that he got for his sand blaster

and this is after the buff. it looks great the pictures dont do the car justice lol. after we painted it we realized howb dumb the little piece of trim looks on the driver side quarter so were gonna pull it off and paint touch it up a little. i hate the trim on the passenger side door just as much as you do and eventually ill get that fixed to.

What the hell stopped you from doing something with the hood? That would have been the icing on the cake!

Dang, cute girl with a Camaro??? What more does a guy need?
Anyway, car looks good. I agree though, I would have held off for the hood though. I know what you mean about being laid off though. I just graduated HS, and I quit my job after an argument with my manager at BK. 2 years and no raise or anything. How lame. I am done with fast food. I want a better job anyways...

Re: Camaro Painted!!
lol thanks everyone. and yeah it was good bonding time with the gramps and yes that IS my girlfriend lol. thanks guys i really do appreciate the comments. and i believe its actually flame red. the car was painted by the PO and he did a pretty good job. this color is brighter than the stock red, when i pulled the trim off the doors you could see the original color, it was much darker.
and btw i found a place in chicago that makes fiberglass hoods, and they have a 4 inch and a 2 inch. not sure which would look better, but its like 315 for the 4" and its about 2 hours from me so i could save bout 100 bucks on shipping so i think when im back on my feet im gonna go that route.
heres the link. ever heard of them?

Re: Camaro Painted!!
it is a beautiful 3rd gen. no denying that. and a great job of working the front piece, i have to re-do mine. someone said it was fiberglass but i think its actually a rubber type material, can you tell us what it is.
and more pics would be wonderful.

Re: Camaro Painted!!
hey tony, our nose pieces are not fiberglass. idk exactly what they are called but it is a type of rubber. if you paint the nose and take off the cone then you need to mix a certain type of flexible additive into the paint. but if you leave the piece on the car like i did then theres no reason to add the additive. the flexible additive helps when you go to put the nose back on that way the paint wont crack, but it evaporates over a few weeks.
and yes im getting the grill painted and put back in and get my new emblam ill take a couple more pics of it.
IROCjoyce- i also like the black hood on the red car. not many people are a fan of it but i think it makes it look pretty tough. think ill keep the fiberglass hood black until im sick of it and then ill paint it.
bigdavesiroc- its really nice to get a compliment form you, i watched your build and always loved your car. and you know im actually 50/50 on painted the buckets. i wanted the buckets to match the grill and the hood. but at the same time, the gfx are silver and idk if black red and silver would compliment each other. ill do a little work on photoshop/paint and ill poat some pictures of it.

spoiler is on 1988 Sport Coupes. 88 is the only year that sport coupes had this spoiler. The early 1988 sport coupes had the z28 spoiler, and the later 1988's had this one. they werent used ever again. they look like a smaller version of the 91-92 high rises.

You should paint the gray gfx black along with the headlight buckets and new hood.

i like the buckets body color personally.. BUT i also like the idea of keeping it stock.. so i do like the black. i still haven't decided how mine will be, but i have a little while to think about it. basically i am no help at all!

Car looks great! 1000X's better than before! I would leave the buckets body color. Red with silver GFX looks awesome

Re: Camaro Painted!!
i agree with dave about the blackgfx, not a big fan of them. im going to keep the hood black though. but proly more of a matte black, or a low gloss. i dont like it being a flat black. i think the black hood looks okay on my car because of the black tinted ttops and the back hatch with a dark tint. we'll see though. i have about a week to decide if i paint the buckets black or keep them red body color.
maybe i should start a poll?
