home from track duty(pics)
hadn't posted in this forum in a while, and i'm not sure if i'd posted any of my new wheels, and i know i haven't of my new hood. i got the hood from a buddy that had bought an 83 z28 brand new and took the hood off like 3 months later in favor of a cowl hood, so this hood is in like new shape (with a fresh coat of white of course) and i couldn't be happier. let me know what you think:
good shot of the new hood:
if you don't have rubber on your quarter's, you're not playing hard enough!
newly installed 9" with 4.56's, full spool, 31 splines, bmr lca relocation brackets, and aerospace components drag brakes
a shot of the office

wheels are here to stay. i love these, and they are SUPER light (fronts w/o tires ~ 8lbs, rears without tires ~ 11lbs)

It looks great. Nice job. Since i got a new daily driver i have decided to take the camaro off the street as well. Love the rims, would like a set myself but kinda pricy.

Re: home from track duty(pics)
yeah...they kinda hurt my wallet when i got those. i got the rears for a killer deal, that's the only way i was going to justify it. when i finally got around to getting my fronts, i thought i was gonna choke when the summit rep told me how much my total was (with tires, install, and a few other odds and ends)

Re: home from track duty(pics)
Just curious, I want to run my car once and see what it does. How much does it cost and what do I have to have in the car to race it on a strip? Is pure street trim good enough for them? I understand alot of there safety requirements like overflows and stuff which my car has everything that the factory put on.

i'm glad you guys are diggin' it!
hey steve, you can keep your street car! i got something comin' for you...better make sure those twins are dialed in, that's all i can say!
i'm gonna try to get some more pics of it tomorrow with it not on the grass. i spent a few hours today cleaning the car. i finally polished the wheels and actually conditioned the tires. i gotta say, i love this hood...and white! it looks so good when it's clean

Re: home from track duty(pics)
probably right....but i'm trying to get something together that'll have a whole lot of cool factor...and should be decently quick. i've also decided, mainly cause of cost, that i'm gonna stay n/a...no positive manifold pressure for me

Re: home from track duty(pics)
i want cool factor too This season was the only season for me N/A actually, and it was kinda boring...lmao. Blown up 7 motors on spray over 8 years, figured this stock shortblock would have gone this year, but it kept on ticking, so I figure I'll try a little extra air push for the spring. Worst case, I pop another engine....4 hours later I'll have another one in there. Cost is huge, but so is the grin from going fast.
Ninja edit: I think i might be done with high price forged bottom ends too, by the time I build a really nice stroker fully forged, I can buy 8-10 355sbc with cast everything and just bigger ring gaps.

Re: home from track duty(pics)
my goal now is to have the baddest n/a "street driven" thirdgen in my area. i say street driven cause there are a few pretty quick all out drag cars, even though with my 4.56's and my super loose converter, i'm not exactly street friendly.
i actually drove my car tonight though. i drove it 30miles from my folks house to my house, then i drove it about 15miles earlier this evening. i'll probably put another 50mile on it or so this weekend. it's fun when you don't have to listen to the loud exhaust and gear whine coming from the 9" all the time.
i know what you mean about blowed up motors though, that's another reason for the n/a for me. i have a hard time keeping them together without an extra push, lol1

Re: home from track duty(pics)
i dont really like the drag stance on third gens, but this one pulls it off really well. again, dont usually like no gfx and yours looks good. ive been dying to get my hands on one of those hoods. is it possible to make the hood work with the factory flaps or w/e you wanna call them if you dont have the crossfire setup with the dual filters. i just got a regular carb on my car and i wanted that feature of the flaps opening for sealed cold air. even if they had to stay open all the time.
#21
Re: home from track duty(pics)
this one was not a functional hood from the factory, i just opened the hood up. the hood i had before this one was a factory hood though. it was nice, but wouldn't clear anything taller than the stock setup. i don't think it'd even clear a regular lg4 or l69. the crossfire was a super lowprofile setup

I like it. However, it would clean up with a lower valance and mud-flap delete. I am more impressed with the 12.6 out of the 305. Gives me hope.

Clearly you don't. I was saying you need a lower valance and to delete your mud flaps. Mud flaps/rubber guards which don't seem to be doing a very good job. Ever consider some 3M blue tape and some white paper to mask off the effected area? Magnetic sheets work too.

Re: home from track duty(pics)
thank you sir. the 305 does have a new best with the 416 heads. it ran a 12.66@103.98mph on a 1.667 60' time, going 7.97 @ 84mph through the 1/8mile. it started to nose over just before the mph markers and wouldn't pull the last 80 or so feet. i put .005" in the valve lash and cleaned out the fuel filter. went out and noticed it was pulling all the way through the traps, but it was also not running the hood pictured. it was at paint and i was running the stock hood. went 12.71@103.99. slightly heavy and no fresh air to the motor. it also made the tune go from very lean (with the crossfire/fresh air hood) to slightly rich, so i gotta play with it more...
wheels are here to stay. i love these, and they are SUPER light (fronts w/o tires ~ 8lbs, rears without tires ~ 11lbs)

the mudflaps do a much better job then without them. i am almost always in a rush when getting the car ready for the track and always forget to protect the quarters with something. the mudflaps are always there, so it keeps the majority of the rubber off. i know they are working, you should see how caked they are with rubber, lol!

Re: home from track duty(pics)
hehe, yeah, lots of people think i need some sort of gfx...but i like the car how it is, so it's staying. and i'm not into adding anymore weight to the car. i've managed to get it pretty light. WITH the ford 9" and an iron headed sbc, my car only weighs 2975lbs (that's without me, i'm kind of a big boy...260+lbs) and i personally like the sportcoupe style when doing a drag specific car.

The only reason I am suggesting the valance is aerodynamics. There is a trade off between static weight and drag coefficient. Sometimes 5 pounds on the nose can work in your favour. Same thing applies to covering up the vents in the nose and using headlight covers. I mean we are talking "purpose built" aren't we?
#33
Re: home from track duty(pics)
well...the only thing i can tell you is the NHRA/IHRA Stock Elminitor guys run the sportcoupes when there is a choice. something about the smaller nose cutting through the air better and all. honestly though, i'm only trapping ~104 right now, it's not gonna benefit from any real areodynamic stuff yet. your monte is more of a brick, and actually looks good with JUST a front valiance. mine looks incomplete when it just has the front gfx.
when i start trapping 120+, i'll start playing with headlight covers, grill opening covers, and taping the slots and all that garb. right now, i'm playing with other things. i'm planning on a solid camshaft swap and going from mechanical pumps to electric pumps (water and fuel). that's my focus right now. based on the numbers, i think i could get the car in the very high 11's with those basic things changed. i also still have a lot left in the carb tune. i haven't locked out the distributor yet, and just overall have way too much on my plate to change/upgrade to worry about drag coefficiency when i'm thinking this combo will never trap above about 115mph.

Re: home from track duty(pics)
i'm not really into spending money that i don't have, so i try to only spend it once. even though i've got a few hundred combos dreamed up in my head, i can only tackle one at a
time...well...atleast while i'm still in college, lol!!!
oh, and you have a pm

Plus, these pics don't have any sound.
If we were standing next to it while it was running you would get 10x the remarks.
All good ones of course.....

305 (kinda old pic, done away with PCV and power steering now)
sound clip with new single 3.5" exhaust, sorry about picture quality:
ground clearance shot of y-pipe, incase anyone was curious:
that pic was taken with 26" tall rear tires, the car now has 28" rear tires and has even more clearance. i've NEVER hit the pipes

if you just put a procharger on that car you could drop that car into the 11's or maybe 10's. Great looking car.

haha, yeah right! no, that's a dynomax bullet muffler, 3.5" in size. it's a race car, in GA...i don't have any emissions stuff to worry with.
----------
now what would be the fun in that? lol! my goal is to have a "street driven" N/A 305 in the 11's. with the 10.2:1 c/r i have now, head gaskets would be changed on a regular basis, even with race gas...can't imagine what kinda fun i'd have with it when i bump the c/r to 10.9:1 in a month or so!
