What's everyones choice? Currently using a random MSD wire set, but one is arching (bandaid fixed) and another boot has somewhat deep nicks. Anyway, i was looking at those Accel ceramic ones, but would like some opinions. As i have limited experience with this area.

If you have headers , ace or accels are a good choice with the ceramic ends. Not sure if they would work but I have a new set of ace 135 degree ends but you might want 90s.

Stock with the stock metal heat shields. I bought granatelli coils and wires and they lasted 2k miles before they started to die and cause all kinds of misfires. Went to stock LS3. I was duped by aftermarket ignition parts. Stock GM for the win, especially when it comes to coils.

I have stock manifolds, straight boots. The ace look like accel. Summit sells ceramic wires under their name. They look like accel too. I having second thoughts though after i read the reviews.
Which granatelli wires did you get? I have the DUI "Sultans of Spark line of coils, very reliable. The MSD were fine too till recently.

I had the 85KV extreme series coils and their plug wires with the heat shielding. If you take apart the wire assembly it appears that it is just a normal cheap plug wire with a bunch of fancy heatshrink with a fiberglass boot. The coils are what upset me the most. They were extremely expensive and I thought they would be a better upgrade over stock GM and I needed to buy coils anyways. Turns out, after some research on this, GM makes really good coils. All my missfires and dead cylinder issues immediately vanished when I went to OEM LS3 stuff. Luckily for me, this happened on the dyno so the tuner could see the data real time. Out of all the money I've spent on my combo, I feel the dumbest for buying into the marketing of the Granatelli hype when I was skeptical to begin with.

I have MSD wires with Hinson sleeves. I like that the MSD can be bent to any angle you want. Each one is custom bent for my headers.

Cheapest you can get. For me? Those are "The Best", and work as good as high $$$ stuff.

Qwk, which msd set you have? I thought I could angle mine, but they won't bend.

I don't regret selling my stock wires, but I kinda do my stock coils. I've heard good things about them, but those "sultan" series coils are really good. Even msd, accel, petronix have quite a bit of bad reviews.
I'm sorry to hear about your granatelli wires. Their reviews are pretty good, but only on the more expensive set, $250 something. Their cheaper line of wire sets have about amount of so-so reviews as the other brands.

I would love to see an engine master episode to cover LS coils and if the "hotter" coils do anything to a high compression motor.

Same. Got a set of Jegs house brand wires like 5-6 years ago at a swap meet for $20 or something, work great!

Yep. Ignition parts area total waste of money, unless you have a situation where some part of it is not working. In addition to no power gains, you get the added benefit with aftermarket parts, of unreliability to boot!


They did something similar to that; they tested a ~630 hp engine with all MSD everything, and then tested again using OEM parts that they pulled from a junk yard motor. Wires, cap/rotor, coil, ICM, everything. The junk yard parts made ~3 more hp.

DUI (Davis unified ignition) makes them. They(dui) were having a black Friday sale when I got em. I paid like $275 for a set. Normally they sell for close to $600 I think.
I noticed a decent improvement in seat of the pants performance. Start and idle quality improved a bit too. Not so much for the msd wires though.

What was that test trying to illustrate? The max ("Continuous") output of each coil?

How's that 33mj compare to the 15mj coil, when it's translated into crankshaft hp?

Most of those better coils are OH cam engine type i believe. Funny how the smaller, compact ones did better. Except for that #1 spot. Which kinda looked like an LS style...or was it?
Were they just testing OE coils? Was hoping for aftermarket comparisons too.

It wasn't too clear, what they did. "Now we're going to show you HOW we did the test"....but then they didn't actually show us how they did the test, for example. My take away for their vid was that it doesn't matter which coil (of those shown) you use, because of variations in dwell, operating voltage and other operating conditions in various vehicles. Is anyone on these forums "tuning" their dwell? I've never done that when replacing a coil. Still, replacement coils have always worked better than good enough. Except for aftermarket ones.

AFAIK, the coil will put out whatever is required to overcome the resistance to jump the gap, and no more than that. That's what my prof taught us a few decades ago, and you can witness that on a basic scope, hooked up to a running car.

Yeah, it was a bit rambling before the guy actually started testing the coils. Most of those names I never heard of.

Higher Compression Ratios are not so much an issue...
However when Cylinder Pressures get high enough from Forced Induction, the Spark Plugs can experience what is referred to as Blow Out.
Really it is the inability to form the Spark in the first place.

Increased Coil Dwell Time/ Spark Energy is needed to remedy the issue.

Capacitive Discharge Ignition Systems can definitely benefit from Low Resistance Ignition Wires and Non-Resistor Spark Plugs...
However most of us need need the Noise Suppression and can Not use Non-Resistor Spark Plugs and Ultra-Low Resistance Ignition Wires.

Inductive Systems do actually perform better with some Secondary Resistance.

I'm running D585 coils with the heat sink on them with some eBay plug wires on my turbo car. They work great
