Mom's 84 firebird 4.8l swap

I bought this car back in 2008. My wife and I spent some time cleaning, fixing, rebuilding, and putting it back on the road before her and I even got engaged. I sold it to my parents, which paid for my wife's wedding ring and they have managed to hold onto the car. This car means a ton to me. When my dad called me up back in the spring and told me the 700r4 finally gave up the ghost he asked me what i thought we should do. Of course an LS swap was the first thing out of my mouth

Here's some pictures of when we got it.

body panels replaced and some proper fitting wheels

fast forward a little to 2010 and we finally repainted the car for my parents.

Then they drove the car for a long time. Up till the spring of this year actually. After figuring out some logistics, and a couple phone calls/facebook messages to a buddy and I headed to GA to pick up the car and to AL to grab a 4.8/4l60e pull out from my friend.

Re: Mom's 84 firebird 4.8l swap

The car sat for a few months while I took care of some other priorities, including finishing out the racing season in my car (which ended early due to another broken t56). So 2 weeks ago I got the car into the garage and got to work.

Obviously budget is key to the success of this. I sold the headers and y-pipe to a guy on my facebook page (Mu11et Militia) and bought an oil pan from ict billet. This pan requires a remote oil filter. This pan is actually going to go on the spare engine for my car and my spare f-body oil pan is going to go into mom's car. So essentially, I bought an f-body oil pan and pickup tube for $200 shipped (about what I sold the headers for, lol!)

I'll keep this post updated as I am able to make progress. The goal is to make the car drive and stop like a modern car. This will include some LS1 brakes and a set of SFC's, all built by myself.

Get some old ROH wheels for it and you got a blue clone of my car.

unfortunately this won't have near the attention to detail as your car. the budget is really tight on this one. if i can make it pay for itself that would be really ideal. i have a buyer on the hook for the engine, and that will help a bunch.

Re: Mom's 84 firebird 4.8l swap

whew, i guess i got so caught up in getting the pictures up and saying what i have been doing i forgot to outline the purpose. yes, a stock 4.8/4l60e swap specifically for my parents to be able to hop in and enjoy like a modern car. my dad is a gearhead as well, but he is past wanting to wrench or tinker all the time, especially on cars they use as daily transportation. that is the focus, and to get them into it without spending huge coin.

Re: Mom's 84 firebird 4.8l swap

Nice story, cool to hear your parents still wanting to enjoy it. I kind of like the original picture lol... I remember those days. Man could you ever corner, but only without anyone in the back seats!

Wife and I traded in her 86 Camaro for a brand new TransAm off the dealers lot in 89 before we were married, engaged months later. Funny how these cars become sentimental. Our car will always be in the family too. Cheers

Re: Mom's 84 firebird 4.8l swap

it's always changing, lol. i pushed this back out of the garage while i figure out some stuff on mine. i'll be putting it back in the garage soon. i have a jeep that needs some attention before the firebird gets back in the garage too i'd guess.
