Spohn motor mount help!

I am in the process of seeing how much I need to notch my k member. I installed the mounts loose. I ran the bolt through the clamshell on the passenger side. When I tried to install the bolt on the driverside this is how far off I am. Is this normal? If so, how has someone installed them? Want to make sure I am not doing something wrong. Thanks

Re: Spohn motor mount help!

I didnt slot mine at all but it was a pita to get them in. When I installed mine on the K member I slid them up as high as possible. When I installed the mounts I used 1/2 bolts which were almost size for size with the poly inserts which made it a huge pain nut i got them with help from a pry bar and a hammer lol.

I did have to notch about 1/2" out of the back of the kmember so the oil pan wouldn't hit

This is a bit ridiculous. I am about to order umi mounts. Have people modified there mounts to fit?

Re: Spohn motor mount help!

I used the stock mounts on k member and just the setback plates. I also dropped the motor in but I had to use a pry bar and hammer for it to get to the sweet spot.

Re: Spohn motor mount help!

I installed everything loose, including the crossmember side, and then tightened all the bolts once the engine was in. No prying necessary. Are you sure you have the proper mount on each side? There are also several holes in the crossmember, are you sure you are in the proper ones? Also the engine side mounts can install down side up I believe?

Re: Spohn motor mount help!

I had to shim the passenger side mount about 7/16ths from the block to get the motor to sit level and to get things to line up

I also installed everything loose

FWIW, I've heard using poly mounts make it 3 times harder........ and that appears to be what you are using........

so a hammer and pry bar maybe in your best interest

Re: Spohn motor mount help!

I am going to double check everything this weekend. Seems weird that you have to pry a mount that was designed for this application.

Spohn seems to be well known for bad fitment on everything they make for our cars. So its not weird to me. What I noticed is spohn basically makes the mount holes WAY bigger than they need to be to compensate. which makes it a pain bc a lot of people dont think when they bolt them down. Being a machinist I notice small things. Spohn drills the mounts 1/2"(0.500"), The K-member is drilled 10mm which is 0.3937". Gives a lot of room for error.

I also didnt have instructions since I bought mine used, but maybe spohn states to slide them up to the outside/top then tighten them down, and maybe they used 12mm bolts (0.4724") Instead of the 1/2 I was supplied with which are size for size with the poly mount through holes. I know when i yank my motor I will have a tough time getting them out. But I already had one pounded in so I just stuck with it. Next time the motor comes out a PA racing K-member and arms will be going in place for sure.

Re: Spohn motor mount help!

Yeah I doubt I will buy anything Spohn again. I am leaning towards UMI mounts right now.

Re: Spohn motor mount help!

Do these mounts require the k member to be notched for all applications or only if you're retaining A/C?

What are you using on the engine side? Are they from Spohn as well?

I had factory 4th gen engine side mounts and replaced the inserts with poly. They can be put in backwards, messes things up.

Re: Spohn motor mount help!

I remember having to fiddle with my Spohn mounts as well but that was 8-9 years ago. The motor still does not sit exactly level side to side.

/\ that is my exact setup. Maybe I have them backwards. I will check that out tomorrow.

Re: Spohn motor mount help!

Yeah check that out... I have stock 4th clam shells with prothane poly mounts, and Spohn stand offs. Everything bolted together great, and I can remove the k-member off the motor, and put it back in without prying or doing anything forceful.

Even if people said a particular conversion mount didnt require notching of the k-member for oil pan, I think I would still notch it if I were to swap another car. Only because you never know what your clearances will be until its all in. And once its all in, its a pain to take it back out. Ide rather just cut, weld, and install and be done.

Re: Spohn motor mount help!

So I ended up having one of the mounts upside down. Everything lines up good now. I will feel better with more oil pan k member clearance so the notching begins.

This is the proper way to install mounts, rubber, poly and most definitely solid. Spohn is known to have a droopy pass side mount
