Re: Getting my feet wet...going turbo 6.0 w/Pics

I fixed as many small issues I could find for now.Just need to put my front lights back on and clean the car up and shes complete.Tried to take it around for a test drive with the charge pipe off and can feel its not quite happy going past 1/2 throttle.Got a stumble in there but no codes yet.Hopefully just the change in exhaust is causing that.Anyways..heres another quick startup video.Friday is dyno time..cross my fingers.

Re: Getting my feet wet...going turbo 6.0 w/Pics

I took the car out for a small test drive..it runs rough in the lower rpm..trips the maf sensor and then I start hearing a nice lil whistle.I hit maybe 2psi of boost in 3rd gear and man...I feel a strong response there.Soo tempting to lay the hammer down.I cant sleep im soo excited and nervous at the sametime to dyno tune this pig.My exhaust doesnt sound the same anymore either..has a lower rumble than I remember. I still need to resolve my leaking oil drain fitting on the timing cover but waiting for a new cover and having it welded on this time to prevent leaks.

Few more hrs and ill have either dyno videos posted up..or a sad short post of sorrow lol.Wish me luck.... and power.

Re: Getting my feet wet...going turbo 6.0 w/Pics

Well the good news is the car still runs and drives. The bad news...I need to convert to ls7 maf,my 2.5 charge pipe is too close to the maf and throws it way off for readings, I need 2 new o2 sensors, and my oil drain leaking very badly underboost so I need to replace my timing cover and weld a bung on properly and reroute the line so the oil can drain fluidly. We are only doing a very safe tune and using 14* of timing, redline at 5500 with 4psi of boost.

Here are 2 smokey vids:

Base tuning.

And 1 power pull to see how it would hold up.

My tuner thinks 600whp isnt going to be hard to make once we can turn things up and its running more timing with a proper maf graph. I got alot of work ahead and a short amount of time to finish it so off I got to order parts lol.

Re: Getting my feet wet...going turbo 6.0 w/Pics

Yes it did hold up thankfully. I got a new timing cover on the way..some fittings..ls7 maf card and pigtail,ls7 maf bung,2 o2 sensors.Just need to get new timing cover gasket just incase the stock one isnt reuseable. Then hopefully next weekend Ill tear the front half down and fix my issues and try to get it back on the rollers for a complete tune and play with the boost controller.Im debating if i should just change the wastegate spring to 10lb spring now lol.

Re: Getting my feet wet...going turbo 6.0 w/Pics

So quick update,I took the car out today to stop by the exhaust shop that built my hotside and figured the 20 min drive would be a good test to see how things are for heat in traffic. Aside from my slight oil leak the car really didnt go over 175*. I 1000% understand how addictive boost is now! I cant express to you guys the devilish giddy grin and giggle I made as I rolled into 6th and hearing the turbo spool 2psi and still pulling hard and realise the smooth power curve I was speeding well beyond legal limit. My bov is actually quite nice..its not loud and just enough of a whoosh sound to know things are working properly.

I got my ls7 maf bung welded on and got a new ls7 maf card sensor.Waiting on a wire harness pigtail so i can plumb the cold side more effectively. Im praying my new timing cover arrives this week and have my -10 fitting welded on and then get that major problem sorted. I grabbed 2 new extended length o2 sensors and put extra heat sheath on them and installed..car seemed to appreciate that some also.May 22 is my goal to be 100% and fully tuned.Hoping for a miracle to pull it off. May23 is the first armdrop racing event and I want to drive the car there and see how it does.

So I got my ls7 maf installed, new o2 sensors installed.Going to swap timing covers over the weekend if all goes well.Took the car for a little test run seeing how it adjusted to the new maf. Heres a small teaser shifting at 5000 1-2 run.

Re: Getting my feet wet...going turbo 6.0 w/Pics

Its always been tail happy since Ive done the ls1 swap so Im used to it.What I wasnt used to was the extra hit the turbo gave and light the tires up more..I short shifted at 5000rpm. Anxious to see how much better it gets with a full tune and more timing. My tuner got sick this week.Ideally mid next week will be final tuning and more boost.

Re: Getting my feet wet...going turbo 6.0 w/Pics

Well Id love to update and say things are all ok now but they have gotten better..and worse at the sametime. I managed to fix my oil leak and oil drain line issue. Did everything I could think of to prepare for a good dyno day and drop the car off to be tuned.Well it was a nightmare to tune the ls7 maf so then started doing an sd tune with a 3 bar map.Im getting about 6psi of boost and not making power and the car has developed sputtering under load.No codes come up but it will free rev fine. My tuner spent alot of time on the car..nearly 6hrs trying to make things optimal. We narrowed it down to probably needing new plugs and might have burnt up some plug wires.I gotta spend sometime to get the plugs out and I hope they are pretty fouled.Im running tr6 plugs which were gapped at .45 iirc when I first did my cam/head swap.I hope once I change the plugs and wires will wake the car up some more. Currently my power is back around 420hp

Re: Getting my feet wet...going turbo 6.0 w/Pics

I turned my frown upside down tonight. it was eating me up knowing everytime I started the car it kept running worse.I changed to frsh Tr6 plugs and new plug wires. Made some new ground cables to each head and my issues are clearly gone. Throttle response is almost 100%.. boost hits good and steady and the car pulls. Here is a video to compare to my last nightly outting. See/hear a difference?

That's good news! Funny what the trivial maintenance parts will do for performance.

I give you my shakedown pass with the new setup at the first armdrop event. I have traction...and braking issues now lol. Major issues!

I lost this race but the second view really shows just how hard I was pulling uptop.

Heres the gopro view. This is all 7psi of boost shifting at 6300 maybe. And yes..I puckered up!

Side note..I got to play with a Challenger hellcat and was able to fend him off by a car length from a mid 3rd gear roll to 5th gear.Mind you I played with the boost controller just cause I could. He dropped a jaw and gave me a thumbs up.What a day.

Re: Getting my feet wet...going turbo 6.0 w/Pics

Just an update of things Im working on now that the car has been put through its base tune and first few trial runs at a gravel track ...video above^^^. My notorious oil drain situation isnt 100% yet. After getting the car home and running it that day for the event and starting it going for drives around the block I noticed my voltage would drop.Looking under the hood i spotted my belt missing 2 ribs wiped flat. Then to notice my crank pulley isnt seated 100% as i thought which also rubs the welded drain a/n hose end..inturn causing a leak.So the car is down so to speak.

The fix will be a new drain line with 45* hose ends instead of the 90*. An underdrive crank pulley and overdrive alt pulley. I have also swapped wastegate springs from the 7psi to 12psi as i want to see how deep the rabbit hole goes for my final dyno tune session. Im also going to change out my magnaflow to a corsa unit and restore some aggressivness to the exhaust when my cutout is closed. The turbo really tuned out my 228r cam which I love to hear lope.Besides that..my magnaflow muffler is literally 11yrs old.Im sure its shot by now. Thats the plan as of now and then I hope to post my final dyno numbers if all goes well.It sure feels like its making 500whp...I just want it in writing lol.

14* on 4 PSI is really low timing. I don't even pull any timing out until around 5-6PSI. I'm on E85 but, 4 psi really is nothing. You should be in the 20's for sure. I think I was around 22 at 12psi. Depends on the fuel you're running and how the plugs look. Just letting you know there's a lot left on the table as far as power to be had. Track time or a dyno session would help a ton.

That was 16* of timing during the base dyno session and hit only 4 psi of boost because I hhad issues and stopped the pull at 5500rpm.. now that I have fresh plugs and most things ironed out we will do a power pull and add timing into it. It's just safe enough right now to play around.

Re: Getting my feet wet...going turbo 6.0 w/Pics

As of now it seems like I take one step forward and 20 back lol. I got the turbo off to change my drain line with new fittings.Saw that the compressor housing was leaking and sealed that up.I installed my new asp crank pulley and 12psi wastegate spring on.Just as I literally got the car back together...a coworker asks if I wanted to go to the friday night test n tune at the strip.I figured..sure why not..the car should be ok now.

Anyways we hit the highway and cruised up to the track for a super busy crowd of cars.I realised my car Still leaks oil..but I think its either the front timing cover bottom pan gasket seal is leaking..or I pushed a rear main seal of some sort.Anyways I got 2 runs friday night.Neither are anything to brag about as Ive went slower than my n/a setup.

My first run I came out soft as my tires are pretty worn...2.3 60'ft...Spun top of first..half of 2nd and rolled 3rd and 4th for a amazing 13.4@115mph *rolls eyes* hitting maybe 8psi boost. The second run was worse. I bark the tires for a second to clear them.Spun 1st badd launching under 2grand...when I went to shift into 2nd...I hear "whoooosh" the all familiar sound coming from the right front headlight of a turbo still spooling with no charge pipe.I put it in 3rd and just went for a leisure ride pumping out a 15.1@92mph.I was not happy I couldnt get a decent baseline run.It was a long drive back home staying off the turbo.

Got home and couldnt go to bed without seeing how the car shouldve felt over 7psi boost so I tried fixing the charge pipe and retighten some couplers and went for a drive.I got giddy within 2 blocks of my house when I saw a near 11psi around 4500rpm and what real boost hits like.Take a look...

For now I just need to make this oil leak come to an end and hope its nothing more than simple gasket on the front timing cover..maybe do an oil catch can and valve cover breather. But Im hitting the dyno this friday..time to see numbers!

Looks like you're getting there. Its a slow process. A catch can setup would definitely help you out. They aren't cheap but, Mighty Mouse solutions has the best catch can on the market. I'm running one and I have zero oil in my intake.

That is another part on my to buy list very soon when funds allow.Im just not sure on how its going to hook up to be effective but Ill look into more when the time comes. For now I do have a oil cover breather coming which should help.My main concern is still this oil leak and if Ive created a new problem with seals. My entire underbody is nicely oil sprayed though ..as well as any car following me too closely :P

It could be from blow by without the catch can. Check his site, there's instructions on how it hooks up, depending on which can you go with.

I doubt I have much if any blowby.i can visually watch the oil dripping under the car as its running and see where it flows down the underside of the car from driving and then coating my exhaust etc lol. Doesnt seem like oil is coming out from exhaust itself.I can wipe my hand inside the pipes and no residue is present.I do want a catch can for peace of mind though

Oh ok.. Bummer. Those crank pulleys can be a real pain to take off too. Might be the front main seal or edge of the timing cover. Typically the gaskets don't go bad

Is the oil leak what made your car spin out a few videos back? Or was that just a traction problem.

Re: Getting my feet wet...going turbo 6.0 w/Pics

The oil leak was partially to blame for it since the oil did get all over my front brakes I couldnt lock the brakes up and have sufficient stopping power.Im more to blame for pushing the speed chasing down the subaru when i shouldve backed off before the finish line. At the drag strip though i had no problems stopping.Ill take a closer look under the car today and see what..if anything else can be done to stop the oil leak before my dyno session.

Re: Getting my feet wet...going turbo 6.0 w/Pics

*update*

Still havent made it back to the dyno. They were over booked and Id rather not drop the car off and hear the results at the end of the day.I want to be there..see/hear everything that happens during the session. In the meantime I Spent the day really focusing on the oil leak.I found it for sure to be my drain line still after I had cleaned the entire motor and under carriage and started the car to trace the oil.The line itself was seeping.I mustve kinked it at some point before install and the oil was leaking through the inner hose.So I had a spare line around and put a hose end on it and thought all was well.Time to go test it out.It was friday night and was good turbo weather

I headed onto the highway which is 10 min drive from my house. As I got on the highway shortly after starting to lay the hammer down trouble came up quick. In the form of a massive drop of oil pressure.I didnt see any smoke behind me so I thought for sure what said f u. I quickly coasted the car in neutral off the next exit. Looking under the hood I couldnt see what went wrong right away but oil was all under the turbo.Fml..I called a good friend with a tow truck to come get me asap who is also a fellow outlaw drag racer. When he arrived and looked with his light he found my hose had come right off the hose end on the turbo drain. Praying that I didnt hurt the motor too bad from the oil loss.

Today i changed the oil drain line..again.Probably the tenth time Ive had the turbo off lol.Made a new line and triple checked everything..again and put the car together.Fresh oil and began to prime the car by cranking it with the ecm fuse out untill I had oil pressure. I crossed my fingers and then started the car and for a few seconds I had some topend clack but it went away.I let the car fully warm up..revved and held it at 2grand and then shut it off to cool down.Came back an hr later and checked my oil..no sign of anything foul so far.I topped up the oil and went for a light drive. The car runs good..no leaks of oil..no motor noise after an hr of driving so i went to the highway and gave moderate boost 7psi.All is well.Got the car home safely..checked again fo any leaks..checked the oil for any metal etc..all was good.Im not touching this thing till dyno time lol! Now Im all skecthed out.

Re: Getting my feet wet...going turbo 6.0. Now Dyno Tuned

So this wont be a final update but its the one we all been waiting for especially me. The dyno session was a struggle and though not 100% done ..we made power pulls. First few pulls started around 460whp.As we turned the boost controller up..problems became apparent. Mainly with blowby and crankcase pressure.I bought a mightymouse catch can which should be here in a few weeks.I need to route my controller reference at the map sensor instead of at the turbo. For now I use a vented oil cap and unplugged the pcv lines at the intake and we tuned for more boost safely.

To the tune of 600whp and 620tq. Experiencing clutch slippage,Boost tappering off near the end of the pulls. My magnaflow muffler and hiflow cat proved to be restricting flow and creating a good amount of backpressure. Having under 470whp the past month was more than enough fun to pick on many cars including a hellcat. Its a absolute monster now.Boost comes in around 2800 and spikes peak boost at 5500 and then things are violently wild.

Boost is addictive! I'm glad the car doesn't hook because it makes it easier to drive around. But when it spools up and 4th gear let's loose....Huggies doesnt make diapers big enough to hold my sh*t in my pants lol. It's the top end that just rolls out and bury the speedo.

Re: Getting my feet wet.Going turbo 6.0.Dyno tuned finally!

I had decent Falken tires on it. Which the rears have mysteriously gone bad in the month and a half since the turbo was installed. Odd.....

I plan on getting good summer tire and then a spare set of rims to put slicks on for the track

Soon yes I want to get the car in the 11s but I need tires and a few things before I try to track it. And the fact of the oil leak I won't bother trying till that's fixed 100%

With a proper tire and rear there is no reason that thing shouldnt in the 10's! Btw love the stock appearance look also.

Re: Getting my feet wet.Going turbo 6.0.Dyno tuned finally!

Thanks for all the compliments.I do love how sleeperish the car looks but part of me wants to make the car nice looking again. Its true that since its looks semi rough that i dont have to care about scratches..small dings etc but there is a certain pride with having a clean polished body.

The sound is now just doing it for me lol. When the car was N/A it had more lowend tone. While its doesnt attract too much attention driving around it just doesnt sound right to me anymore having the turbo.Im saving up to step up to a borla or even a corsa catback might just open things up some..I need to win the lotto so I can finish things off sooner for summer lol.Dont need the jackpot but half a mill can go a long way :P

Its most definitely making the power to go 10's, Poor 10 bolt wont like that idea however. Enjoy it and keep tinkering!

Ah but it's not a 10 bolt. Even better.. at rare 9 bolt with 3.27 gear.

Marginally stronger will break if conditions are right and parts are hard to come by can only get from one source out of Australia

Can do a 8.8 done cheap if you do yourself Hawks sell them complete for under 2k or can get 12bolt or 9"

Hawks have 17x9 mesh wheels factory appearing and can widen rears would truly keep the sleeper look

Re: Getting my feet wet.Going turbo 6.0.Dyno tuned finally!

Very true,Just dont have the budget for the replica mesh wheels.im still recovering from the turbo build lol. The 9 bolt has been great to me so far, keep in mind i purposely dont launch it hard from a dig or try to dead hook it in fear of it breaking.the parts from australia to rebuild the rear and beef it up really arent bad for price either.
