LS Bolt-Ons? Least Expense Most Results Want Good Tq #s

Hope this is not a stupid question. New to the LS swap idea. I am a sucker for torque. So I want @ 375-400tq on the pavement. What kind of bolt-ons would I need and how much $$$ will I need to spend.

Ive searched for bolt-ons but Im not getting what I want. Any help I would appreciate even if its telling me what search terms to use.

I plan on just going with an 98-02 donor car or great deal on a drop out and while out I want to do the bolt-ons. This seems the simplest route at the moment. I like simple.

Re: LS Bolt-Ons? Least Expense Most Results Want Good Tq #s

I asked for the cheap route and this seems to be what gets me there. Are there any drawbacks in milling down the heads to get that compression? Car would be a cruiser only, no racing, just want it to smoke the tires every once in a while.

If you get a six speed, install at least 4.11 gears.

Re: LS Bolt-Ons? Least Expense Most Results Want Good Tq #s

Yes I will be getting a six speed. I would like to do something about my rear end as well. Its a drum non-posi trac right now. I want big brakes and posi traction so 411 is good huh?

I would like for the car to take advantage of the gas mileage potential where possible so whats a good middle ground for getting that monster tq to the ground and still geared decent for cruising. Probably will do the Power Tour this coming June.

Um...just put it in stock haha. T-56, stock LS1, and if you want to pep it up a bit, maybe step up to some 3.73 gears. It'll smoke the tires just fine and feel like a rocket compared to the old stuff. And 3.73s with the 6 speed is nice on the highway. I have gotten 30mpg+ cruising down to OBX and that was a head/cam/exhaust/intake motor.

If you want to step it up a little more, grab a better intake, better exhaust, and get a good tune. Actually even a tune on a stock motor will give you some benefts.

I dont suggest headers because you said cheap...and headers alone are expensive let alone having to build a y-pipe and trans crossmember if you want it to fit nice. The stock manifolds will flow great for mild builds, even though you'll still need a y-pipe, it wont be as expensive as a full LT set up.

If you want to go a little further, a reasonable cam, maybe a spring upgrade and you'll be doing fine.

But honestly. The stock power or lightly modded power will be a nice change for you until the HP bug bites again.

http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...eDz6u2wi0SwMVw

this is my buddies '04 gto awhile back... in this vid he had ported heads on a LS1 with LS6 cam. i can't remember if there was other mods at the time. someone commented on the video saying it was bs, but that car rolls the hell out. went 8.02@91.7 on a 19" nexen. m6 trans, 3.45 gear.

now the car is a LS2 (6.0) and has shaved but unported 243's on it, stock cam, and 1.7 rockers i believe. makes nearly the same power as the other setup.

I had to borrow a 373 this summer for a few weeks, hated it. It felt like the car lost 50hp going from 411 to 373. I drove 1500+ miles for the power tour with the 411, best mpg 26.2 and overall average right around 20. Of course, I wasn't exactly easy on the skinny pedal either. I'm now running 4.30's and love em even more. 2200rpm at 80 and traction in 1st and 2nd is impossible on the street.

Do the swap and don't look back. I've trapped a best of 116.79 in the quarter and just have full bolt ons. Headers, underdrive, tune, ported stock TB, stock 02 LS6 intake. Of course, this winter its all coming apart for h/c/i....

Re: LS Bolt-Ons? Least Expense Most Results Want Good Tq #s

I didnt gain much goin from 2.73 to 3.73. Was disappointed but with a t56 id say 3.73 is minimum gear. 3.90-4.11 would be better for ls1 full bolt ons

Rockers with ls6 intake and headers should give you good torque. Most full bolt manual cars see 350 whp and 340-350 wtq. Rockers may give 10-15 hp more. My auto only saw 318/320 with basic bolt ons but trapped 111-112 at 3550 lbs or so

Re: LS Bolt-Ons? Least Expense Most Results Want Good Tq #s

So say I do

LS6 intake: Ive seen for $300 to $450 on CL
What extras do I need because of changing the intake.

Milled heads: $200-$400 maybe just a guess.

Rockers: What kind and how much? $$$

Cam: Which cam and how much? $$$

Will I need to beef up the T56 or can stock handle occasional tire roasts.

honestly from the sounds of what you are wanting out of this car, i would say you wont need to do anything. an LS1 hauls in stock form without messing with a thing. i dont think you'll complain about the torque.

Nothing really to change the intake...just make sure the TB is compatible.

To JUST mill heads you should be at $100 for the pair. Any more than that and they better be doing some extra work for you

Rockers..leave em alone. LS1 stockers are good rockers.

Cam...loaded question. You'll spend around $400 for an off the shelf cam. Or you can have someone like PatG over on LS1tech spec you a fantastic cam for your combo. You will need to upgrade your springs however...that'll be another $300 ish depending what you get.

But I still think you'll be happy with an LS1 and leave the guts alone for what you are looking for. Couple simple bolt ons like discussed above and you'd be doin good.

I agree 3.73 is a min. But as others have said, with 3.90s or 4.11s..traction on the street starts to suffer. Thats not what you want. You want the thing to move on the street, and only spin when you want. So for that, Ide stick down in the 3.73 range. Unless your putting some serious rubber on it that can hook pretty nice on the street without having to be heated up.

Just my opinion.

Is this realistic? Cam only and tune numbers.

by the way Diggler

this is my buddies '04 gto awhile back... in this vid he had ported heads on a LS1 with LS6 cam.
saw the vid. That was nice. I would love those #s.... 430wrhp and 405rwtq... if I got those numbers it would be like Christmas everytime I crank the car. That 864 phone number is down in my neck of the woods. I might have to look those guys up for a tune after I get the LS in my car if needed.
