Got it to the point of being able to take it around the block, and discovered the master cylinder front piston has gone bye-bye during the downtime. So, another MC on its way. Dyno date delayed.

But, did confirm 4 forward gears, TC lockup. For sure needs some tuner love.

Master cylinder replaced, a few other things tweaked (like the oil pressure sender leaking).

Drove it to the tuners this morning, 20+ miles of freeway and city driving. Needs some drive-ability help, which is where he says most of the effort goes, anyway. Then to the dyno for some WOT tuning. I assuming he'll give me a dyno sheet (he didn't promise that, and I didn't ask).

Hopefully it'll be ready for the first race Friday.

During the street manners portion of the job, the tuner reports that at 3/4 throttle, it has "traction issues until 3rd gear."

Supposed to hit the dyno tomorrow for the WOT fine tuning.

He says he'll give me a dyno readout. I'll post as soon as I get it.

Remember, mile-high elevation here.

Video and pics to come (so I hear).

Re: Stroked LQ4 Build Thread

those are impressive numbers through a 4l80E, big converter, and mile-high elevation.

Re: Stroked LQ4 Build Thread

Numbers notwithstanding (and yes they're very nice), how do you correlate the mph to engine rpm? I went through the same thing when I dynoed the Camaro years ago. I was looking for data related to rpm and not mph and with a convertor, that may or may not be locked up, it makes the math difficult and probably inaccurate.
Just wondering and thanks.

Re: Stroked LQ4 Build Thread

i also wondered about that. without engine RPM, calculating torque converter slippage would be pretty tough.

also, i wondered about the SAE corrected value of 1.21....is this supposed to reflect "sea level" conditions?

Re: Stroked LQ4 Build Thread

I tried to extrapolate the the rpm values working from the cross over at 5252 rpms.
I knew my start value at approximately 3000 and the finish at 6500 but it IS difficult.
The other thing that came up and perhaps someone has experienced this before, is the converter locking up on it's own, despite the electrics being disconnected. There's a blip on my graph (around 4500) that the dyno operator says is the converter locking up. Can't see it happening electrically however is this something that's possible with hydraulics as the trans gains speed?
(Don't mean to clog up your thread Mr Kid but it came to mind)

1.21 SAE factor - yes, that is supposed to make it sea level equivalent. But, it usually isn't enough, according to the dyno man. I guessed it would come out around 400 RWHP before it was tuned, I was closer than I thought I would be.

He had a clip-on tach on one of the spark plug wires, but didn't give me an RPM readout. I'm going to ask if that is available.

My son has a 2001 S10 Blazer that had an LS1 clone swapped in before he got it. They reflashed the 4.3 PCM with an LS tune. He took it to a tuner after he got it (not the same one I used), and it would do the same thing - lock up even though it wasn't being directly commanded. The tuner said he couldn't find anything in the programming that would do that, so it must be part of the operating system. So, my son found a 5.3 Silverado PCM, had the tuner flash his tune on it, and it quit doing it.

The '86 LG4 I had in the '82 Berlinetta would lock up the converter based on reaching 75 MPH. One pass it didn't lock up for some reason, and I broke out by .05 sec - good thing the other racer had already red lit.

Vid of the dyno run (have to have a Facebook account to view it - sorry, only source I have for it).
