my turn lt1 t56 swap

I'm finally going fuel injection after getting an amazing deal on a 93 z28 Im doing the swap. The car it will be going into is an 83 berlinetta currently it has a carbed 350 just stock but runs great maybe 40k on the motor and auto trans. I have a 3.73 rear end Already so im good there I'll be doing everything that I can myself fabbing to wiring I'll be doing it in between school and work so I may not get to much time to do this but will try to get done as fast as possible at most 2 months hopefully. not many mods are going to be added just needed items headers, pcm reprogram, etc not running smog ac and evap and I could use as much info as possible and will be much appreciated I'll have pictures soon as well

Re: my turn lt1 t56 swap

So for some reason my home computer will not let me view the message board so pics may be longer than wanted, and I am curious if I can use the driveline from the 4th Gen car since its aluminum and if I could use the rear springs as well cause its not the stock ones on my donor and since I have an early third gen do I need to buy another torque arm or will the donors work?

Re: my turn lt1 t56 swap

yes you can use the fourth-gen drive line, the rear end will bolt right in along with the springs and im pretty sure the torque arm will bolt in. the drive shaft is a bolt-in too. fourth-gen headers won't work. regular third-gen headers will. you can get oval port for extra flow but is not needed. wiring will take a little bit of work and patients but is doable with the right diagrams that are available on this site. Any other questions you can PM me, or there are many swap threads available, including mine! good luck!

Re: my turn lt1 t56 swap

Good luck! I have enjoyed my swap thouroughly. My car is super quick, fun to drive. I have a total car build posted in the forum. Search "high school car" and you should find it. I have about 5k on my swap and drove it everyday until recently when I picked up a grand cherokee on the cheap. There are somethings I wished I did differently with the build, but overall I am happy.

Re: my turn lt1 t56 swap

Alright after getting past the hiccups I've been digging into the build got all the parts to put the motor and trans into my car except the crossmember which I'll probably be making unless someone on here has one for a reasonable price. Still on dismantling both cars sold my 700r4 so it's gone I should have both cars stripped by tomorrow hopefully. I do have one predicament about fuel I'm debating if I should do a in line pump or in tank. Leaning on the in line pump but looking for options. So far im 780 bucks into the build including the donar and parts bought pretty happy so far the only down side is I don't have a car now lol in the end I know it will be worth it

I wanna know if there is an easier way to get the third gen computer out of the car without tearing off the fender

Re: my turn lt1 t56 swap

My PCM was right under my dash, on the passenger side. The wiring is a bit of a pain to get out, but you won't have to take the fender off.

I wouldn't use and inline fuel pump. I haven't heard bad things except they make some noises. Getting the tank out wasn't that bad, it only took a few hours. And you can pick up a Walbro 255 for pretty cheap on summit

Pulling the plastic inner-fender out of the wheel well and taking the passenger side kick-panel out of the interior will give you all the access you need to the bulkhead that goes through that area.

Re: my turn lt1 t56 swap

Pcmforless.com can tune chips, they even rent out cords so you can tune it yourself from a labtop.

Or you could get a HP Tuner, or something alnong those lines

Engine and trans are in the car didn't feel like making a crossmember so I ordered one from hawks. I love how the lt1 looks inside the car I'm dying to drive it again.

Re: my turn lt1 t56 swap

UPDATE I'm pretty far into it but lots left decided to put the 4th Gen rear end and goin from the 373 to the 343 but with disks but just curious of what I would need to complete that I have the 4th Gen master cylinder if that's what I need or not and if I need a regulator as well. Other than that I have fitted my headers great fit with the usual little dings fit up my extenders as well tank dropped replaced carb pickup with a fuel injected one from a 84 v6 firebird in the junk yard which was lucky and really easy I know they replaced that whole unit shortly before it got junked cause all bolts were easy and it all looked shiny and new 15 bucks and bought a pump for 40 new. for a budget I'm doing awesome. Oh and hawks crossmember is up and was a perfect fit and also got my calipers to fit my 14" wheels to keep for winter purposes And a bunch of odd and ends. A little more work than expected but that's what ya get when u budget build I guess. I'm going back in the morning to work some more. and the only question right now is for the brakes until something comes up of course

Re: my turn lt1 t56 swap

The fourth gen rear end swap is pretty strait forward, you'll need disk brake Ebrake cabels, and a new prop valve to balance the brake pressure with the disk brakes. You can use the one from a fourth gen car but you will have to do a little work with the brake lines. Unless you have some extra cash for a wilwood prop valve, I have a fourth gen prop valve laying around I can sell you for cheap. PM me if intrested

Re: my turn lt1 t56 swap

got some more done today have all my fuel lines where i want them and I'm about a foot from the fuel rail just need to do fittings tank is back up did final clearance for my wheels and the calipers so rear end is ready to go in. I am looking for ideas for the emergency brake lines. Will a thirdgen's (with rear disks) cables work on the other 4th Gen rear.

Re: my turn lt1 t56 swap

If I'm not mistaken, people who had disk brakes prior to the 4th gen rear swap, they reuse their cables. So it should work. Just make sure you hve the tab on your caliper where the ebrake mounts.

Re: my turn lt1 t56 swap

Went down to the local pick n pull grabbed everything for my brakes I got the e-brake cables and the proportioning valve which I don't have to mod and all super cheap. Next step is wiring the car up so hopefully I can do that in respectable timing it shouldn't be to bad everything is marked ready

Re: my turn lt1 t56 swap

Alright new update the car is almost done I just need to finish wiring got about half way today and kinda got stuck nothing major I just need to mount my fuse block I am using the 4th Gen block and not sure where to put it so I thought I would ask all of u where. Or where to get another small fuse block wih at least 4 fuses and 2 relay spots. I also noticed on the 4th Gen fuse block they had 3 fan relays, why the third relay and is it needed. Oh and the power steering reservoir where is everyone putting them or how do u get it to mount on the side of valve cover. It always seems like the smaller things are more time consuming anyway its coming along and getting to close to the budget lol

I put my Power Steering reservoir on the passenger side strut tower. You can see it in this video.
