Lt1 heads And cam couple questions

I found a set of ported Heads on ebay for 450$ The guy selling says 230 CFM @ .550". They have stainless steel 2.00" intake and 1.50" exhaust valves and Competition Cams performance triple springs.

Ive got a couple questions as I slept since doing research on heads cam. If i am to put these heads on my stock shortblock with a cc503 cam.
1. Pushrod Length?
2. Do I New Valve Covers?
3. Best Head gasket?
4. Rocker suggestions...
5. Ls7 lifters?
6. These springs Good enough?
Im sure I have forgotten something.

Re: Lt1 heads And cam couple questions

1. Check your pushrod length by using a measuring tool for pushrods if you're using LS7 lifters.
2. I'd get new tall valve covers since lift is over .500 and especially if you get roller rockers
3. You need to know volume/cc's of combustion chambers to determine gasket thickness for the compression ratio you desire
4. Pro Magnum Steel Roller Rockers (aluminum ones are a waste of money, in my opinion)
5. (see 1.) Check into the lifter bucket issues using these lifters on a non LSx engine-different length pushrods may be needed.
6. The triple valve springs are overkill I think (I'd rather have a set of Pacalloy 1220 "Beehive" Springs or whatever springs are recommended for your cam)

I saw these heads on Ebay, and they'll work fine, but remember that flow numbers can be deceiving. The QUALITY of flow is what really counts, more so than the quantity, even though quantity of airflow is an overall factor in horsepower. A head that flows less air but has better velocity/quality of airflow can actually outperform a head that has more airflow but poor velocity/quality of airflow. Ask the seller who ported the heads and see if they are a reputable company.

On the other side of the coin is the price...getting a good price on some pretty much ready to run heads may be more important to you than spending 1.5 to 2 grand on reworked heads with exceptional flow quality. $450 is an especially good deal if the heads were done by someone who knows what they're doing, when it comes to porting heads for increased performance.

Just my 2 cents.

1. The correct way is to check using a pr measuring tool. Alot of people who dont care or are to lazy to check run stock length but IMO this is asking for trouble.
2. Maybe. Depends on what cam/rocker you use. Stock valve covers can be modified to work with most 1.6's and a cc503.
3. Per Lloyd Elliots advice Im running GM part# 12553160 with my LE2's. As mentioned above you may use a different one depending on what compression ratio your going for with your heads.
4. You will get many opinions on this. Im running Comp Pro Mag nsa 1.6's
5. yes those will work but I have no experience with them. Im using GM replacement
6. I wouldnt think so, use the springs recommended for your cam.

I dont know anything about those heads so I cant help you much there. I would check the reputation of the shop or person that did the machine work and labor.

Good luck with the build

Re: Lt1 heads And cam couple questions

Almost 1 year later and i still have not gotten a cam in my car Now working on a pretty much leftover change budget and some freebies
but I have now in my possession
1 gm lt4 hotcam
1 set of lifters com cams
1 set of rockers prw 1.6 steel
1 set of new lt4 springs

I plan on reusing the stock retainers, locks, pushrods unless i find some cheap ones.
While the head is off and apart im going to port them I have done some research Im not going to port much but rather smooth the valve guides and straighten the roof and inner walls. Not gasket match. Also polish the exhaust side and call it good.
