my s10 went right threw it no problem.. granted it was the morning after and they had "plowed the streets" if thats what they call plowing.. there was over 6in left on the road.. and i also had my lt1 motor sitting in the back of my truck under a tarp.. so that gave me plenty of extra weight..

Re: 91 camaro frame up rebuild and lt1 swap* IT HAS STARTED*
ok well i got alot done today.. had the day off of work and got the rear end out of the t/a along with the gas tank. also got the rest of the wiring out of the t/a had to take a sledge hammer to the brake booster do to the damage of the car. and had to inlarge the hole in the fire wall a lil bit to be able to get it out.. got the interior wire harness laid down and semi shorted out.. got the 3rd gen steering coloum back into the camaro and im very pleased that it all just pluged into the 4th gen harness.. put the dash in for another test fit i need to get a cut off wheel and trim a few places to get it to sit the way i want it to..also got my new carpet in and the 4th gen center console sitting in thereit looks amazing.. i cant wait to have the dash in and mounted up with all the gauges and face plates on and have it all working.. i have found a buddy with an engine lift and another with a stand.. only problem is the motor is in the back of my truck.. and the lift wont fit with the motor in the back.. ill figure somthing out.. i really really wanna tear into that motor soo bad and its killing me that i cant.. if i can just get it out of the truck and onto the stand i could have it in the car the next day.. with all new gaskets and my roller rockers, and a fresh layer of paint.. and on the paint issue what color should i paint my block?? black? red? blue? chevy orange? silver? i cant make up my mind.. ill have some pics for u guys friday.. i have work all day tomorrow so i wont get over to work on it and of course i forgot the camera this morning.. they are also calling for more snow this weekend so idk if ill be able to get more done or not.. it depends on how much i gatta drive the wife around cuz her rustang doesnt move outta the driveway in the snow.. so we pile into the good old chevy s10

Re: 91 camaro frame up rebuild and lt1 swap* IT HAS STARTED*
I got a lil more done today not much.. mainly just organized the mess of wireing that I had.. gatta love zipties. I did some research on the dash swap on this site. Mainly tpiterror's build I'm going tomorrow to buy my cut off wheel and trim the metal off the firewall and should have the dash mounted tomorrow..
This swap is comming along very well and I'm suprised on how fast its going.. I'm mainly getting held up by friends for the stand and hoist.. so I'm not ganna wait anymore I'm going to go get a stand and rent a hoist. I'm hoping to have the motor in the car by next week then I'm ganna be working on freshening up the rearend with a wire wheel n some paint. Hopefully with money permiting I will be able to undercoat the underbody. There will be pics tomorrow! I have work at 4 so hopefully everything will be done that I want done by then. The car looks so good with the newwer carpet that I actually take my shoes off to get inside to work on the wiring and dash lol. For right now I'm going to use the tan t/a seats and door panels with the black t/a dash and center console and have black carpet I think the tan and black will look good for now untill I can get my racing seats and 4point belts in

i know you might be tied for a little money but it might be a good time to swap that opti out while everything is out of the way

Re: 91 camaro frame up rebuild and lt1 swap* IT HAS STARTED*
i have an broken spark plug wire tab on the opti anyway so its being replace.. i have someone on another forum selling me an opti w/ 30k miles and a brand new msd cap and rotor.. then i just need plugs and wires. im going with ngk plugs and some off the shelf wires for right now till i can get some nicer ones. i just wasnt expecting to have the gaskets cost over 250$ for a full set.. im used to paying around 100$ so this took a big chunk outta my wallet.. the dash wasnt really that hard just took some time.. word of advice for anyone doing this dash swap.. leave the air bag frame in.. take the air bag out.. cut the brackets on the short and leave the steering coloum pretty much unbolted because ur going to be taking the dash in and out for fitment.. and the steering wheel mainly the tilt lever gets in the way..

i would have gotten more done but my engagment party is saturday and i have family comming from up and down the east coast there is a lot of plaining going on and IM OUTTA PROPANE in the garage so no heat and its really really cold!! just got another 6ins of snow last night. doing these gaskets with no heat is ganna suck and i dont have the 150$ to fill up my propane tank again.. and if i use the lil bbq tanks ill only have heat for an hr or so before thats used up by my 375k btu heater..

Haha thats a tough question. Since it's painted now, it's just going to be a ton of reassembly. I'm HOPING it'll be done by late spring this year so I can drive it through the summer. I'll know for sure depending on how much I get done in the net month or 2.

Yea I'm sure I COULD have more done by now but it's my secondary car and I just like making sure everythings done right the first time, so I've been taking my sweet time on it. Never tackled a project this big before so I like to think about doing something for a few days and then when I decide exactly how I'm going to do it, I do it. I also wasn't planning on the car being at the body shop for over 2 months! That set me back a little but I'll get it back at the house soon. Then it's game time!

Re: 91 camaro frame up rebuild and lt1 swap* IT HAS STARTED*
nice progress, i've just started the dismantling job on my firebird for a ground up go through - redo. My plan is to go with either an f-body or truck based lsx engine/4l60e setup and use a ls1 f-body dash/body harness. Would like to know if you encounter any problems with your harness...As for your swap, i think it's looking pretty good! When i did my 4th gen console, it was a real PITA to get the automatic shifter plate to fit correctly. But it's basically a ton of trimming, test fit, and re-trim. The shifter mounting location does need to be "flattened" down a bit too if memory serves me right...Happy Swapping!

Do u mean the center console or the shifter itself? Because I'm using the 3rd gen shifter n the console pretty much just bolts in.. have to use some self tapping screws but it goes in just fine no trimming needed

No, i was talking about the automatic shifter plate i see laying in your driver's footwell. Didn't know if you intending on using that piece or not, it was the reason most people with either automatic or manual cars would use the manual 4th gen shifter plate. At the time i put my interior in the car, the 4th gen manual consoles were both hard to find and expensive...So i used the automatic console/plate. It did take a little work to get everything trimmed in, and i'm sure there might be more than one way to do it.
Here's a link to an old write up that i did...wish we had pix but that was before i owned a digi-camera.
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/body...ic-center.html
ps -
is that new carpet or reused? If new, where'd u get it and how's it fit?

April is still quite a bit of time. Keep chippin away at it and you will be suprised how fast it will come along.
But this weather does really suck. Were supposed to get 18 inches in illinois over the next few days..

ok im ganna stop being lazy and get off my fatass and go over and try to get some work done on the car tomorrow.. maybe get my rear end wire wheeled and painted. mabey get it installed or just get the old one out and the new gas tank in from the 4th gen.. i gatta do something.. it just sucks my tool box is now at my house since i was working on a buddys car and its like 600lbs.. seams like every job i do i add a new tool.. which isnt a bad thing but man i remember i used to be able it pick that 5 drawer tool box up with a buddy and get it in my truck and be able to take it off by my self.. i tried to get if down off the truck this past weekend by myself and nearly it nearly killed me.. needless to say my expensive newish tool box now has a few scratches and has been reorganized

Re: 91 camaro frame up rebuild and lt1 swap* IT HAS STARTED*
BIG UPDATE!!!!
IM CHANGING DIRECTIONS WITH THIS BUILD.. im going to part out the camaro vert and go with a buddys 86 trans am.. he recently picked up a 94 formula and has no more use for the shell of a ta sitting in his driveway.. the main reason im doing this is because my camaro has MAJOR body damage.. and the ta is ready for paint with a quick layer of high build primer and a good wet sanding.. it also has an 8 point cage.. here are some pics..
the story behind the car is kinda cool too i actually was at the scrap yard unloading some scrap and i look accross to the gate and in comes this ta on the back of a trailer.. and then they start pushing it off the trailer.. i run over to them and ask them what they are doing and they answered that they were getting rid of the car .. i asked them what the scrap yard was giving them for it and they said 250 i told them i would give them 300 if they towed it down the street to my house.. which they did.. and then my aunt flipped out and so i sold it to my best friend for the 300 and now im buying it back.. i have made my decison.. it will cost me less money in the long run for body work. and im kinda tired of the camaro look.. i love it but its time for a change.. ill be pulling everything that i can from the camaro and putting it into the trans am.. the complete 4th gen interior i have worked into my camaro will be comming back out and going into the trans am.. along with everything else.. if anyone wants a camaro frame or complete roller let me know.. if not its ganna be stripped down to frame and sent to the crusher.. =(

Re: 91 camaro frame up rebuild and lt1 swap* IT HAS STARTED*
this car was being set up for an all out drag car.. and is the perfect base for what i want.. i have missed my ttop so much.. and this car has no rust what so ever and the body is perfectly straight.. only 1 problem i see is that i cant put in windshield wipers on the car again.. it was welded shut and from what the po told us is that he welded piping in from there to the subframes of the car.. the car also has fully custom subframe connections that run the complete length of the car and makes the car super stiff.. ill have pics up soon.. please if anyone is interesed in the camaro please contact me asap..

WOW!! Random direction change out of nowhere! LOL. I do have to say though, I am a Trans Am fan myself.
Hopefully you find someone that wants to fix up your camaro as well since the verts are a rare breed in themselves. Gonna be a lot of work swapping and getting the TA back together but from the pics you posted it def seems like a clean shell, and now your 4th gen firebird dash and all will be in the proper car for it haha. I've got to say I just became much more interested in your build (than I already was that is), and I like the cage in the TA too.
And just an FYI, the gauge cluster in the TA is an 85 cluster. You sure the cars an 86? Does it have the high mounted brake light on the hatch glass?

Nice find! I've always been a fan of the trans am too.

Re: 91 camaro frame up rebuild and lt1 swap* IT HAS STARTED*
the title says 86 and the vin matched.. so truthfully i dont know.. i never really followed ta or firebirds.. i was always a die hard camaro fan but in the past few months they have just grown on me and when my buddy picked up that 94 formula and offered me the shell for 400 with a full interior minus his racing seats i had to jump on it.. and i got a guy comming to loook at the vert that was ganna buy it a while back before i decided to build it up because he low balled me and i just couldnt bring myself to do it.. well i might be trading it for a ram air 1 or 2 hood for the ta and some tt2 17in rims with tires.. so we will see how things go
