Looks good Fast. I hope to be putting a LS1 and 4th gen dash in mine soon. Lessons learned would be great.

Re: 91 Z28 LS1 T56 swap
I hope to get some work done on it this weekend. I have to try and borrow a welder to weld up part of my k-member. PA racing did a custom k-member for me (got them to put rack mounts for a ford power rack on), but I have to change the standoff for the motor mount stand due to steering shaft interference. Once I do that, I can put it back on the ground and get to work on the rest.

Re: 91 Z28 LS1 T56 swap
Small update. Got my front end sorted out, just need to get an alignment...hopefully in the next week or so. Hood is done, just haven't gotten it back from the body shop yet. New wheels and tires are on, and my ride height is almost perfect...just need to tweak a little here and there. Now I need to get started on the interior. Here is a pic of how it sits right now.

Gorgeous Gorgeous Car. I seriously need a garage.
Curious, how long did it take from the day you started body work, to finishing laying the paint?

Hard to say, as I did the car in stages. Several hundred hours. Here is the best time line I have. When I already had the interior painted, and the engine bay painted, and everything else was bare metal...it took me and a friend 4 days, working 16 hours a day, to get the rest of it finished. So, that's 128 hours between the two of us just in that. I would say at least that if not more, to get it to that point.

Sure would. And I would do a lot of things differently. This build spanned so many years, it incorporated too many ideas and custom stuff. While I'm happy how it's turned out, I would do things differently if I did it again.

Re: 91 Z28 LS1 T56 swap
Finally have a little bit of an update. I moved recently, again, so things have been on hold. I had to have someone else paint my hood, and it looks like ****...I'll have to redo it once I get time and space to do it. Exterior is just about done. I just have to finish my hid projector retrofit, and tint the windows for the exterior to be done. I need to fix a couple issues with my exhaust, and get some interior plastics and I will pretty much be done...for now. I'm just ready to drive it. On with the pics!

Re: 91 Z28 LS1 T56 swap
With the current engine, I should be around 430-440 at the wheels. Nothing too crazy. Once I get it on the road and enjoy it for a while, I'll start saving for the big engine. That one will do over 600 at the wheels...it will be the same setup that's in my friend's corvette which puts down a bit over 600 at the wheels.

Re: 91 Z28 LS1 T56 swap
I love it! Can you give me a little more info about some things though?
1. The brakes. I am wanting to do the same upgrade on my car and was wondering if you got the rears to work? I've read most places that its just not a good idea to do for several safety reasons. Also, what master cylinder did you use?
2. Where did you find the Koni coilovers? Were they custom made for your car? Any worry about putting that much stress on the strut towers? Any worry about messing up the fenders because of it?
3. What is your exhaust setup? I would assume a y back to an SLP loudmouth style setup with a muffler on each side of the gas tank? Or did you do true duals? If so, do you have any pics of the way you ran it?

1. Front brakes are 14" Brembos (CTS-V setup). I'll be doing the 4 pot V rears as well, I just haven't gotten around to installing them. They fit fine with an adapter bracket.
2. Rear Koni coilovers are custom. Fronts are adjustable koni struts made for the car, with a threaded collar (spohn's kit if I remember right). I'm not worried about the stress. All my seams are welded, and the top plate is braced. I'll be adding a strut tower brace for piece of mind. Drives great around the parking lot...especially with the rack and pinion.
3. It's a custom true duals setup. 2.5" pipe into two Borla S type mufflers with Borla tips. It's all the same parts that Borla uses on the corvette Stinger setup. Don't have any pics of it though.

As far as the brakes go, I have been doing some reading on the rears and the general idea is because of the design of our rear brake mounts, yes they can physically bolt on and work but you would have issues with the axles natural inward and outward movement inside the housing causing problems with the rotor moving inside of the caliper itself. I would love to have matching rears but reading that concerned me so I wasn't sure if there was something I missed or not?

Re: 91 Z28 LS1 T56 swap
What you are talking about is called pad knock back. With the nature of our rear end, that is a side effect of a fixed caliper. Some people have more issues with that than others. I'm not worried about it. I plan to hit a few HPDEs a year and maybe a few autocrosses. Nothing competitive. I just want to have fun. There have been plenty of race cars with solid axles and fixed calipers over the years (nascar being the most obvious...and my most disliked).

ATP. They were an Italian wheel company that went out of business several years ago. They were a high end wheel, and were popular with the corvette crowd 6-8 years ago. I tried selling them on here a while back, but no one got them. I ended up giving them away because I was moving and didn't have the space for them.

Thanks! My next step is to tackle the interior. I'm going to try my hand a wrapping all the interior plastics in faux leather...hopefully it won't turn out horrible.

Re: 91 Z28 LS1 T56 swap
Thank you! I haven't done much since my last post. I covered all my interior panels in the faux leather...half of them turned out really nice, the other half not so much. So I decided to rip all that off, and just paint them with SEM's interior dye. That upholstery glue is a NIGHTMARE to clean off!
#83
Re: 91 Z28 LS1 T56 swap
Your right,
When my interior was wrapped in leather, I broke nearly all the plasics trying to get it off. The previous owner painted interior with SEM. It stuck well to the plastics.
I smoothed my plastics with 80 grit, then adh. Promoter.. then a bit of hi build primer and finally automotive paint..
Tried gloss black 1st, made the plastic look cheap to me
So I went back over it with chassis (satin) black, looks much better.
I'm looking forward to seeing how ur plasics come out.

Re: 91 Z28 LS1 T56 swap
That satin does look a lot better. I briefly thought about painting them with the remaining paint I have from painting the car, but that would just be way too shiny for me. I want more of a stock appearance. The plastics I have are a little beat up, plus I have to cut openings to fit around the roll cage so I'm hoping I can clean them up enough to look nice. I'm still trying to clean all the glue off from the leather. Might be a week or so before I get a chance to finish.
Still need to do my headlights too. Been sitting on housings, projectors, and hids for almost a year now...too much going on to mess with it.

U ever get ur car on the dyno???
Im getting ready to start my 91 z28 hard top going to be doing about the same build u have. Im doing a LS6 with a torquer3 cam and a stalled 4l60 with a strange s60 and most likely going to turbo it. And im going to lower it on c5 z06 wheels.

I got as far as getting it ON the dyno, but never made a pull. My exhaust is ON my gas tank, and we were afraid to make multiple pulls with it like that. I was on a tight time schedule at that time because I was moving out of state, so it never got dynoed.
Your build sounds nice! Good luck with it!

Very nice build man. You cars stance is making me want to change to a coil over set up. Did you retro-fit a coil over collar and spring onto your exsisting rear Konis?
Did you end up getting rid of the billet spacer when you had your Forgestars built?
Again very nice car!

I almost got the front wheels with the proper offset. BUT, I began thinking that if I ever wanted to sell them I would have a hard time doing so. They would only fit a third gen, and 98% of third gen owners are cheap bastards (no offense to anyone, but sadly it's true). So I kept them with the C5 offset, so if I ever decide to get rid of them I'll have a chance at selling them for a decent price.
Thanks for the compliment.

Outstanding build. Absolutely Love the wheels. Almost as though if C5 Z06 wheels and C6 ZR1 wheels mated, these would be the result. haha! I was looking at picking up a set of C5 18"x10" Z06's in comp grey for mine, but you sir just raised the bar. This cheap third gen'r is now going to have to dig deeper.
All kidding aside though your car's a beut. Super clean.

Everything was plug and play for me. I stripped the body harness out of the donor 4th gen, and used it in my car. The one thing I don't have is the vacuum diagram for the blend doors. I need to figure out how to connect the 4th gen selector **** to the 3rd gen heater box. But, I'm not ready to do that part yet so I haven't bothered trying to figure it out.

Re: 91 Z28 LS1 T56 swap
Thanks! Spindles are custom pieces made by Racecraft, and my tie rods are rod end pieces from Baer. Tie rods are called a bump steer kit and are for a different vehicle. I converted to rack and pinion steering, so my stuff is not sized like a third gen.

Good eye. Yes, they are welded (no, I never mentioned it). I welded all the seams in the engine bay, as well as some of the others in the car. I wanted to make sure everything would be tight and stiff.
