hey guys, i have a question for you guys. I have a new windshield and a new a-pillar roof (rust issues) and a new motor. since doing this huge job, my windshield keeps getting very foggy inside. its almost hard to wipe off with just a dry rag. I dont drive the car in the rain since the roof still leaks, so when it rains it goes in the garage. It is a strictly dry-weather car only. does anyone have any ideas why it would be getting fogged up all the time? i doubt its the heater core, that's new and i dont have any drips or anything and coolant level hasnt changed at all. thanks guys

If it is only driven when dry it has to be the heater core.

well one thing i'm realizing lately, since i just got the fuel issues that were plaguing me for a year and a half situated (fingers crossed), i am still driving it - it has been a very mild november so far in jersey. with the dryness outside, i'm not noticing hardly any new foggyness accumulating, i'm wondering if it may have been just humidity building up along with dust. when i drive in the summer, its always windows down. when i keep the car in the garage during the winter, its windows down albeit a cover is on, still may be getting dust in there. could that be a possibility?

the heater core was replaced like 6 years ago maybe. each one i've had go on me has just blown up on the floor and hasnt seeped. the other thing is i'm not smelling any antifreeze in the car at all. and i never have the blower on usually so it shouldnt be able to be blown up onto the windshield with the defroster.

If it were the heater core, you would most likely have an oily film on the windshield as antifreeze has a lubricant in it. You said it is hard to wipe with just a dry rag. Is that because of residue left behind or just the sheer quantity of moisture?

It is not oily. It takes elbow grease to get it off with a dry rag, but it doesn't smear like oil would.

Your carpet could have water in it and you don't know about it. The top of the carpet can seem dry but it's still wet down below. This is definitely a possibility since the roof leaks. It takes a loooong time to dry out.

You must have moisture inside the car to get foggy(dew) windows. I suggest you use a Strong Shop Vac. on the carpets and leave the car outside(weather permitting) with the windows down, you need to air that car out.

To rule out a bad heater core:

Disconnect the hoses and temp. by-pass the heater core.
If the fogging stops u have found the cause.

same problem on a 87 z28 stopped when I changed the heater core.

don't call me an id10t but if you want to rule out the heater core, next time when it fogs up, get a finger tip full of the fog and if it tastes sweet then you will know. And no I didn't drink the Kool-Aid.

Dragonmas is right, coolant is sweet tasting. I second the caroet being wet. If the caroet and backing have been wet and still are it will fog the windshield as well.

well i had the heat on last week, and on defrost and it wasnt fogging up. it seemed to reallyh only be happening in the summertime. i dont know if maybe something was stuck in defroster vents from after all the work i had done or maybe it was the humidity of the summer but its not fogging up now.

over the summer i could clean it, and it would be foggy that night on my way to work.

Well if it was the carpet it would definitely fog up when the heat is on, so that's not it.


Another possibility is that the drain for the evaporator might be clogged. That could explain why you were experiencing this in the summer but not in November.

hmm.....that would be a good possibility. i hardly ever use the a/c. when i did the engine swap i considered deleting the a/c, but i havent used it more than a time or two each summer since i got the car. i will have to try to check the drain the next time i can get the car out of the garage if it ever stops raining
