Opinions Needed! What color should I do my door panels?
Alright, I sounded a little desperate in the title, but some opinions would be nice on what to do. I took my "new" camaro from the brink of the scrapyard to a good daily driver, but it still needs some work. I listed two options I'm thinking about below and would like your guy's opinion.
I recently did a bunch of interior work and have stopped at the door panels. I decided I like black/red scheme for the interior, but the seats I got are black and grey. Also, I recently did my sail panels and headliner in grey.
However, I purchased enough material to do my door panels in a red and black combo, so I think I may go that route.
Here is what my interior used to look like:
Here is what it looked like after my "new" seats:
And here is what it looks like now:
Here are two schemes I am thinking about doing with the panels, please let me know which option you like better, or if you think a different scheme would be better overall:
Option 1: Black carpet, red vinyl:
Option 2: Red Carpet, Black vinyl:
Sorry about the poor lighting in the above pictures and semi-fast image editing, but my phone camera wasn't cooperating due to the sun glare.
I originally planned for option 1 because those are the materials I have now. If I changed it, I would have to buy red carpet.
Anyways what do you guys think would suite me best? I EVENTUALLY would like to get the same scheme seats I have, but with red inserts and black sides in vinyl(instead of grey inserts and black sides, Hawks or somewhere sells the covers.) I may keep these seats for a long time though or maybe never change the upholstery on them. I'm not against doing a black/grey combo either, but that also would require me to buy new vinyl or carpet, and wouldn't be a big change from the original paneling. However, the original paneling being all grey has to go.
Anyways again, to stop rambling should I do:
Option 1?
Option 2?
Different scheme all together? (please tell me what idea you may have)

Re: Opinions Needed! What color should I do my door panels?
I am doing the same thing to my 1991 firebird. Once I installed ebony leather seats from a 2002 camaro ss the 25 year old grey interior had to go.
I bought a complete red trim set from a 1992 camaro, black door panels from a late gen 3 trans am and finished it off with flame red arm rests.
I used this 79 nascar edition trans am as inspiration.
Your 2nd idea is more in line with the door panels in the photos, with the black arm rests melting into a black background. The 1st idea is more the route I chose, letting the red armrests pop against a black backdrop.
It really comes down to what you prefer doesn't it?

Looks like you've done a lot of work that I have been doing!
Is that picture of the red arm rest and black door panel from your car? And if so, did you do that yourself or have it custom done?
I'm trying to do all the work myself because it's going to save a whole bunch of money and I think it's kinda fun. I plan on painting my existing door handles and hope they hold up to the paint. I'm pretty sure I'm going to do my first option with black door panels, and red vinyl behind them since I already have all the material to do that. I'm just worried If I can use the foam behind to old vinyl because I don't have anything on hand that will work if the old foam can't be separated from the gray vinyl.

Option 1 blends better with what you have now since it sets of the red trim on the lower part of the door whereas option 2 runs both reds together.
I like the idea of the red seat inserts.
The red shifter boot needs to be toned down - I'd go with a black one with red threads.

With the shift boot, I wasn't sure if it would be too much or not, and I can kinda see it being a little much. However, I had sewed it/cut pieces myself... and that took a while. I was thinking of black with red threads instead of red with black threads, but I decided to do red with black thread since I had the material. The black threads stand out a lot more then they do in the picture which helps a little too!
Hand sewing another would take quite a long time so I don't think I'll be doing that anytime soon. Maybe if I can get our industrial sewing machine fixed (and figure out how to use it), i'll do another shift boot.

Re: Opinions Needed! What color should I do my door panels?
I did the work myself. I recommend spending 10 bucks for the door panel tab puller, makes an easy job. my old door panels had the deluxe foam backing plates, pull them off and re-install them if you are changing to ones without them. I also found out that the L-shaped metal trim can be taken apart and changed to fit either left or right sides. I had 2 pristine passenger side pieces and 2 pitted driver side pieces. I now have near flawless trim on both panels by using the 2 passenger side straights with the best of the driver side curved piece. Last weekend I installed new black carpet and made custom sail panels from an old seat cover. This weekend it's overhead console time!

Wow that door panel came out clean! Did you upholster any of it, or did you just swap parts around?
I plan on cutting and sewing vinyl and carpet in place of my old stuff, just a different color. My mom's industrial grade sewing machine has not been functional for a long time (the oiling unit hoses are cracked), so I plan on hand sewing it which will take a long time.
I have been holding off doing the panels because 1)its going to take a long time and 2) I am probably going to convert to power windows soon, so I have to make sure to have the proper upholstery for power windows.

Re: Opinions Needed! What color should I do my door panels?
I basically bought and installed the parts I wanted. I did remove the deluxe foam insulation from the old ones and convert the best metal trim from both passenger sides, ditching both driver side , pitted trim pieces as mentioned above. The sail panels are another story. They are hand cut and sewn to the original grey panels. Didn't take too long, just put on David Bowie's 1976 concert from the Station to Station box set (with soon to be Iggy Pop guitarist Stacey Heydon) and finished both panels before the encore.
